Maryland OFFICIALY accepts invite to BIG 10

  • The SEC will go after V Tech first. New market for them. Not sure what Clemson would bring over FSU. We have a national footprint. Ga Tech brings little. After that maybe NC State for the N. Carolina market. Little else of value to SEC in the ACC. We need to start lobbying quickly.

I see the SEC trying to expand Basketball if possible.

  • We aren't going anywhere. I have no faith that Barron will do anything for athletics. Maryland based the decision on Athletics and Barron puts more emphasis on academics. Plus we have no one willing to take us at the present time.

Barron isn't the final vote -- the board of trustees is...and at the end of the day, everyone answers to the boosters.

The board of trustees will do what the heavy dollar boosters tell them to do.

Being a financially wealthy booster = Making smart financial moves

Smart financial move = Leaving the ACC

We have much more of a say in the matter than you realize. Logic and financial sense are too much in our corner for this to be ignored.

We're not. Penn State is about as east coast as most Big 10 fans are willing to go.

Wouldn't be surprised if UVA and Georgia Tech receive invites as well within the next few months. UVA and Va Tech are in unison, but if UVA even senses that Va Tech is looking toward the SEC, they will feel the need to look around too and can be had. Early reports say Georgia Tech is looking to get the hell out of dodge.

Yep, Va. Tech and NC State have been the reported #15 and #16 teams for about a year now in SEC circles. Most of us would love to invite FSU, but Florida will absolutely not allow it. They, Georgia, and South Carolina made a pact years ago to vote against a second team in any existing SEC state (in other words, you, Ga. Tech, and Clemson). Mike Slive will not do anything as major as adding another school without existing SEC presidents' unanimous approval. This is also what prevented Oklahoma from coming to the SEC last year; they were a package deal with OK. State, and that did not serve the SEC's interests. The only double down they would accept would be Texas, but the Big 12 wrote a much better buyout than the ACC, apparently. It will be a dozen years before raiding the Big 12 is even an option.

If the Big 12 decides to make a southeastern statement and the ACC starts blowing up, they would be wise to invite you, Ga. Tech, Clemson, Duke, Miami, and Louisville to immediately go to 16. Those will be the best choices on the board and will bring a ton of TV markets. There is nothing more of value to the Big 12 by looking west.

I' m just curious whether the SEC or Big 12 step up their expansion efforts now!
    Stay tuned!
Does this trigger another avalanche, or is it the last rock falling?

The teams may not seem exciting at first glance. Rutgers is a solid football program and Maryland has a great basketball tradition. Also, this opens the rest of the B1G to recruiting in the DC/Baltimore and NJ/NY areas. Plus the addition of many tv sets. It's definitely a money move. I know on the Nebraska board we've heard a rumor about the possibility of adding GT also. If we go to 15 teams then we have to to 16. I would absolutely love to see FSU as that 16th team. Noles have always been my second favorite program. How would Florida State fans feel about the possibility of joining the B1G? In favor? No way? Heart set on SEC or the Big 12? Just rumor of course but would like to hear your thoughts.

  • Those that leave the ACC and join the BIG, the BIG fronts the $50 mil for them and they pay back over several years out of their conference earnings.

So, the BIG is going to take 2 more teams I believe, I understand GaTech has approached the BIG, I'm hoping we get to 16 and leave Notre Dame out in the cold as the ACC crumbles.

  • After Saturday's whoopin', Maryland realized that there is not a team in the Big Ten that is as bad ass as FSU. It was not about money or stability, it was about saving Maryland football players' lives.

    RaidingNole

  • As far as conferences go, I'd have no problem joining the Big 10 in football, but I'd prefer to join a Big12 with Clemson, GT and another team or two in the southwest for our non football travel budgets. But the money's still so much better than staying in the ACC that I wouldn't care.

I just want out. And the big 12, big 10 and the SEC all have their priorities in the right place while the ACC does not.

I'd want both the big 10 or 12 to change their names if we joined as I have a tough time joining a coalition of institutions of higher learning that cannot count.

Too many NC. schools in the ACC to make it go television wise. The writing is on the wall.

The big ten has two seats left, if they invite UVA, you have to think UNC will be calling Chicago to also get in.

FSU will be okay in the end (my guess is most likely big 12). I've got lots of Noles fans who are good friends. Both fan bases share a lot in common vis~a`~vis the way the acc treats us.

  • I would gladly go to the Big 10. I would prefer the SEC (not gonna happen) or the Big 12. I believe we have leverage, same as Maryland, because we voted against the increased buyout fee. From a legal perspective we simply need to follow their lead.

B1G administrators love it, fans hate it. Football just getting more diluted. Doesn't matter, though. It's happening.

  • Just as we've been calling for since summer, most Big 12 fans are calling for expansion and FSU is the first choice. There are some that like the 10 team round robin format. But that equals 9 conference games and no CCG, which hurts schools like KSU this year and OSU last year. I believe that FSU will ultimately end up in the Big 12. And I hope it's soon. The tv contract already has escalator clauses in it. I think that nothing leaking out is actually a good thing. I'd bet my bottom dollar that there have been talks going on behind the scenes.

  • FYI, Notre Dame has been a B1G target for decades, but even though we are now making more money per school than them, they have the boosters and brand to remain financially viable as an independent IF conferences like the ACC and the Big East before that continue to allow them as non-football members. As much as many B1G fans detest Notre Dame for repeatedly refusing to join the conference, they still wield too much power to afford to give up. Jim Delaney (B1G Commissioner), I think is actively doing everything he can to not only bring in more money/power to the conference, but I think ND is always the end-game and for this reason there is no way the B1G goes to 16 teams unless they are #15.

@beanoleKJ - The B1G hasn't been able to count for quite some time, please note that excluding Rutgers as I'm in denial and they haven't been officially announced yet, the B1G already has 14 schools. The University of Chicago was a founding member of the B1G and remains a member...academically at least. biggrin

Good luck to Florida State, hopefully your school leaders are proactive and get you into a power conference where you can continue to have success. Florida State has always been my favorite of the 3 Florida power schools and a large part was Bowden, but I like the higher of Jimbo Fisher as well...after this season I wish Iowa could've gotten him!
