Looks like the Canes are staying in the ACC

  • So D1 will be split into 3 levels? tongue

I agree, though, that it seems inevitable now that the 4 super conferences will be a new level (if not completely free of the NCAA) and the rest of the current FBS will be the new mid level with FCS staying where they are.

I believe you are correct, but keep in mind that this will happen over the course of a few years. Meaning FSU and Clemson can agree to go to Big12 in June 2012. After that nothing else should happen because other ACC schools will benefit from the money the 40 mill they get for those 2 and the other conferences will say fine they now have 12 everything is fine, no super conferences. Then in 2013, Georgia Tech will take the ACC money and run to play with FSU and Clemson, Louisville will be brought in to make it 14. At this point, the fall of the ACC will be all anyone is talking about. The SEC knows that the next hot team is Virginia Tech and they will be receive offers from all 3 conferences. They don't want to leave Virginia, but with the fall of the ACC on the horizon, they really don't have a choice. They would then go to the Conference they feel is the best, that being the SEC. The SEC at this point will also look at North Carolina and try to break up Tobacco Road, seems unlikely, but will NC have a choice and can they pass up the offer. If the SEC can't get NC they will go after NC State. Now the B1G(Big10/12) sees all of this and has to react . They jump all over Virginia and possible Maryland. At this point it's 2014 and the Super conference idea is becoming fact. By then our Sanctions should be final, and because of our 2012 class and the lack of teams in the ACC, we will look like a top team again. 2014 is win the Big12 makes it's final pitch to ND and tells them Miami is coming with you. ND t.v. contract is up, and because of the super conferences that are forming they may have no choice, if they want to win a National Championship in football again.

    I disagree with a lot of what's you're saying.

There will not be any extra money for ACC teams to enjoy, let alone $40 million (don't know where you're getting that), once FSU and Clemson leaves. FSU and Clemson are the two most valuable football schools in the ACC. About 80% of the money from the most recent contract with ESPN is based on football - $16 million per school, per year. Once FSU and Clemson leaves, that contract will become void - there's no way ESPN is paying the same amount to the ACC without it's two most valuable programs - and will be renegotiated. The new contract for a FSU/Clemson-less ACC will be much, much lower then the already embarrassing $16 million.

At that point, I think remaining football first schools will actively and aggressively look into other options. The ACC will fall and collapse quickly.

This is just my opinion, but I believe the teams the Big 12 is after (in order) are:

    1) ND
    2) FSU

    3)Clemson
    4)VT
    Both being interchangeable

    5)GT
6)NC St/UNC, Pitt, Louisville, Maryland, Miami

I think there's several options. Either way, I'm not sure Miami's chances are very good.

    GO NOLES!

  • 1st_and_Nole,

He's talking about the ACC exit fee. But it's a little misleading how he said it. It'll be a one-time deal of $3-4M/school. I'm sure it'll be welcomed by all of the remaining schools but it's not enough to keep the ACC intact, which he admits.

My fault then. Didn't catch his meaning there.

If it's the exit fee, I doubt any other ACC teams see much, if any, of it. It'll be unknown how much of it FSU and Clemson actually have to pay. Even if it is the full amount, that money is usually not immediately, if even, divided up to the schools. Most likely the ACC uses that money to help pay for buyouts of other teams they will try to replace (FSU/Clemson) with. The Big 12 is rumored to be doing the same thing. Any help FSU/Clemson gets from the Big 12 paying their exit fees will come from the exit fees A&M/Mizzou paid to leave.

The ACC will unfold faster then the Big East if FSU/Clemson leaves. Despite the lack of onfield performance, the ACC has a lot of very desirable programs - especially considering markets (FSU, Clemson, GT, VT, NC Schools). They will be picked off much faster then anything we've seen. I think this all goes down very quickly.

Sorry about the miss understanding. The 40 mill was the 2 exit fees collected. Yes that will only give each team about 2 to 4 mill each. I also agree with ND being the #1 choice of the Big12 , but they will hang on to there independence as long as possible. Which is why I feel FSU and Clemson will be the first to announce they are leaving. Then followed by Georgia Tech and Louisville. I think the Big12 wants Virginia Tech more then GT or even Louisville, but they feel the SEC is a better conference. They will also wait to hang out with Virginia as long as possible. So the way I see it.
2012 - FSU and Clemson announce they will leave for the BIG12
2013 - Virginia Tech announce they are leaving for the SEC
    - Georgia Tech and Louisville to the Big12
    - Maryland and Virginia head to the B1G
2014 - 2 spots left in the BIG12 and B1G and 1 spot left in the SEC - all want ND and ND is forced into a conference
    - I believe it as at this point were Miami (sanctions already started and back on the rise) will swing with ND to make the BIG12 the #1 football conference.
    - That leaves the SEC to try and get NC, but they might end up with NC State
    - The B1G then look for Boston College and Rutgers or maybe even Pittsburgh

  • Louisville will end up in ACC it seems. B12 has all but eliminated them according to Ethridge.

Sorry, I forgot about the FCS.

  • Any chance that ESPN renegotiates, and increases what they pay the ACC?

Would that change anything? Isn't the Big 12 aligned more with Fox?

If ESPN lost FSU, VaTech, and GT from their ACC TV contract their investment would be in horrible shape. If ESPN increased the payout would that change people's desire to leave for the B12?

    Two thoughts -
    1. If the Yankees can pay Alex Rodriguez $30 mil and CC Sabathia $24.2 mil .... the ACC contract should worth at least that much for the top teams.
    2. It's amazing how everyone is getting rich except for the players! Slavery is a highly profitable business model.
