KB is Not a Football Player

  • Last week I started a post that raised the question: "What's up with KB?" Now I know. He's not a football player. He can't run, can't jump, he's lazy, incredibly soft and plays scared.

All we heard was how big of a season he would have.

Natediggy and I were completely blasted for saying that he's not there yet. He's athletic, he's big, he's fast, but he is NOT a complete football player yet.

Bjoern Werner is a football player. Rashaad Greene is a football player. Kelvin Benjamin is not yet a football player.

  • He's still young. That throw by EJ was great. KB was there. He didn't jump. I'm sure he can jump, but he didn't time his catch right at all. No way a guy seven to eight inches shorter than him should catch the ball on top of KB when the ball isnt overthrown.

In any case, we need to teach this kid how to use his superior athleticism correctly. Because he is athletic as hell. Learning how to play WR well takes so much time. It's not all about athleticism. But given his superior athleticism, if he can learn the mental side a little better...watch out.

Wouldn't mind if Greg Carr offered him some tips. Carr was nowhere the athlete KB is, but he had that same sort of body and could catch a lot of jump balls.

  • He has no clue how to high point a football.

    Nole27

  • He has the measurables, he just doesnt seem to have a feel for timing a jump or really playing the WR position, just an athlete out there trying to out athlete the guy across from him. The kid has potential, we dont win the Clemson game without him, but he has to get focused and work on the little things. Great technique will beat a great athlete with no technique most of the time.

  • I don't want to hear any more excuses about this kid (or this team). Is he athletic? Is he really? He has no instincts whatsoever and you can't teach that.

  • Being able to make that play is actually the very definition of athleticism.

It looks to me like KB has a great football body, but is in fact NOT very athletic, at least not in the ways needed for football.

He is a freshman. You can tell most folks on here have never been an athlete. My freshman year I made lots of mistakes, but learned and became better as time went on. And football is even more unforgiving to those that lack experience than my sport. Now EJ you can go off on and I would agree with you. He has not lived up to his potential.

I don't know about that. I think there's just a very wide gulf between what we've seen of him and what we've heard about him.

In fact, that's the case with several players on this team. Fahrenkrug and O'Leary come to mind. Not saying any of these guys are bad players, but we've heard about sure-fire greatness in each case.

You might want to give up football. You're coming unglued.

  • I know he's old for his age. I meant that he's still a redshirt freshman. We've only been coaching him for two years. This is a kid who I think needs more time before we see more consistency.

I'm sure when he reviews the tape of that last play tonight, he will clearly know what he did wrong. But there's a difference between knowing what to do and actually doing it. We're definitely till working on that. Experience comes with repetition. He needs more time.

I think O'Leary has been underutilized in our offense. We seem to work towards him in the first few drives and then forget about him completely. Instead of so many damn bubble screens and stuff, we should have him working underneath on some passing plays as a safety blanket for EJ. And that will obviously help set up some seams and stuff where defenses might jump the shorter route.

It's shocking to me how much he's had to block.

    andy88c

  • I maintain high hopes for KB, and maybe he has been trying hard, but when I watch him, I feel like he's not (at least on the jumpballs). That EJ interception was on him, though, right? I don't think people should blame EJ for throwing it up... KB is 6'6!! But I truly wish the best for KB and he does have a lot of potential... hopefully he lives up to it!

  • I literally lol'd at that play, he was way too late making a play on the ball and when he did actually leave his feet he dove laterally rather than jumping.

  • LAZYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY.

Kid makes absolutely no adjustment and does not jump for balls ever. If he fights & jumps for that ball, he catches it or tips it away from defender.
