Is this Mike Martin's best coaching job in years???

  • Fringe top twenty team to many coming into the year....2 frosh pitchers...lost a bunch of talent last year.... smoked through to the WS.... Mix of young and old.... yeah leaves the pitchers in a bit too long from time to time but Bell has some say in that....but this team IMHO has less overall talent them most any team in recent memory and yet they keep winning....... Props to the coaches and players.

  • I've only been watching since 2003, but this is his best job since then in my mind. Bell should win Asst.. coach of the year.

  • 11's best coaching job in years was getting Mike Bell as the pitching coach and recruiting coordinator. Who knew it would be paying dividends this early?noles

  • I just like sitting in my living room, singing "Benny Benny Benny time" to the tune of peanut butter jelly time.

We owe that to Mike Bell's job making him a nasty closer.

    Meat is recruiting coordinator.

This is Martin's best job since 1998...even if they go 0-2 in Omaha.

I thought he was too, but you can't deny the impact and success that he has had in recruiting thus far. He and Martin Jr. have done a superb job. I'm excited to see what they could potentially do in the future without Martin SR's guidance.

  • 11 made the choices that needed to be made in regards to coaching, and is reaping the rewards. It is good to see.

Separately, I do not think that you can overstate the impact of a rock-solid defense, particularly the infield. These guys are good, and it is fun to watch them kill momentum time and time again with a timely double play.

  • I don't have enough history following the team to adequately judge, but I will go with yes.

There are so many different puzzle pieces that came together this season, though, it is hard to pick any one thing to point to. It has been incredibly fun to watch.

  • Three major things occured with the every day lineup that probably were 11's decision.

    1. Flopped Sherm & Devon in the 1&2 holes very early in the season.
    2. Moved McGee to the 5 slot because of his OBP
    3. Made Delph the every day starter in RF

The move from Sitz to Benny as the closer had to be Bell.

They still leave pitchers in too long when it's clear that they're fading.
Would love to see the difference in ball/strike % from 2011 to 2012.
Big difference is in approach to pitching.

  • Honestly, last night was one of the few times this season that the pitchers appeared to be in too long, and I have to wonder if that was simply because of our lead and/or who was on the mound. Outside of Benincasa, Compton and Smith were our best arms available. I would rather take my chances with them on the mound than Scantling, Weaver, Busch, Waugh etc.

  • Congrats to you guys for making it back this year. We'll be pulling for you guys. Hope the ACC (I know many of you may hate those three letters) can bring it home this year. Quite frankly, the effect you guys guys leaving would have on UVa baseball is my biggest conference re-alignment fear. I'm a big fan of Coach Martin and the 'Nole program. He seems to do it the right way.

Not to hijack the thread, and no offense, but this is precisely why we need out of this conference. With the threat of FSU leaving, other programs/fans are most concerned about the non-football impact it would have on the conference. I mean, really?

As to the coaching job, superb job. I hope Bell gets locked in long term.

  • Superb coaching job. Our defense was also a huge difference this year. We killed several potential game break innings with the double play. No so much with teams of the past.

Might be another impact by Bell. Double plays don't happen by chance.

Actually, many do. I'd point more towards the young pitchers keeping the ball down w/ runners on than any marked defensive improvements (although it certainly does help).

The last part of your statement is what I was alluding too. Calling the right pitch and exectuiting such call is what leads to double plays. Coach Bell and the pitching staff need to be credited for that.

Hence the "also a huge difference" comment. The pitching keeps the ball low forcing ground balls........double play fellas. We were clutch with a few of them.

I say that because if it were to go down, I think we'd end up in the B1G. Not a terrible solution for football or basketball but it would be a program killer for baseball.

  • I have been following since 1985 and I would have to say this is his best all around job of developing a complete team. I have seen more talented clubs at least 5 different times. He has made several great moves in games this year. Adding Bell was obviously his first.

    Gadzooked

  • Hard to argue against it being one of his best considering what we thought we had coming in. Without Bell though this season, I don't think things would be as rosy right now. Big props to Martin for making the tough decision.

  • I know this may surprise many of you, but Compton scares the hell out me. He throws frisbees up there and knew Standford would light him up. He hasn't been able to get the ball down for weeks. The teams we have to face on our side of the bracket can ALL rake. If he doesn't get the outside corner in game 2 we're in serious trouble. For the record, I have great confidence in Weaver. Shocked he hasn't gotten more of an opportunity.

  • Always liked #11. He reminds me of my beloved Braves' former manager (Bobby Cox).

I didn't like the time the pitchers had either but I think the coaches were hesitant to use too many arms before our 2nd surge of runs because depleting the pen would be really bad if Appel made another appearance on Monday.

Compton did not look too sharp but he was definitely bend but don't break.

Weaver looked rattled after he couldn't stop that infield weak hit from scoring a run and walking in a run. Remember that he's also young.

I'm worried but also realize that they are all true freshmen pitching deep into the postseason so we should just sit back and enjoy the results regardless at this point. We will live and die by Leibrandt/Benny+the bats this CWS.
