Is a duel-threat QB is better suited for Jimbo's O?

  • I know I'm well known as a guy that isn't on the Jimbo train. I just wonder at times if a pure pocket passer may be better suited for Jimbo's offense. Feel free to disagree with me and tell me why I'm wrong, it's just something I've been wondering. I mean who doesn't think a QB that can beat you with his feet isn't a plus, but I don't really consider Jimbo's O one that requires it.

    Thoughts?

  • I think people make the mistake of pretending that there is a book entitled "Jimbo's offense" and it is written and shut.

    It's not. His "offense" is his terminology, but what he wants to do with the offense depends largely on the personnel.

  • Probably, if he doesn't mind running. It gives the defense one more thing to plan for and allows you a lot of flexibility in the running game.

  • I'm just not sure if many if any QBs can really have both the instincts of throwing and running. IMO, if I've got a running QB and want to use him as such, that's how I'm going to draw up and call plays. I think it's a play book heavily skewed to make the D focus on the QB, thus opens up the passing game the way it did for tebow and cam.

    Kaepernick, Wilson, RG3 would all be NFL passers if they weren't dynamic runners.

    Jimbo isn't going to recruit a kid who can't throw.

  • The term "Dual-Threat QB" is overused. Not every quarterback that can run a 4.5 is a dual-threat. Lots of QB's can run. Not many can run AND be a quarterback. Jimbo's offense requires a quarterback that can make reads pre-snap, get his team into the correct play, and execute. The QB has to go through his progressions and make accurate reads and throws. If a quarterback can do those things, that's who we want. If he can't, we don't want him. If he can do that AND run a 4.5, that's the guy we want. So yes, a dual-threat is better for any offense, as long as he truly is a dual threat (A deadly passer and a fast runner) and not just a guy who can run and throw a ball really far to his primary target without reading a defense.

  • I disagree but agree. A kid that plays QB who can run is duel threat. If he can't throw, he won't be a QB in college very long. He'll probably move to WR or DB. I just think it's extremely difficult if possible at all to develop both the throw or run instincts when under pressure.

  • I think Jimbo would take a pure passing QB but he would have to be uber elite (Peyton Manning). If a QB can run a bit, it puts helluva lot more pressure on the defense. An elite passer = good passer + good runner
