If Notre Dame to ACC, then Rutgers or UConn?

  • As the 16th team?
    Basketball - UConn
    Football - Rutgers
    Academics - Rutgers
    TV Market - Rutgers

Then again, nobody cares about watching Rutgers sports.....where as UCONN is a BBall powerhouse.

  • UConn. It's a no-brainer. Rutgers doesn't bring us the NY market any more than UConn will, and UConn is a better fit overall.

I would much perfer this from a football perspective.......come to think of it, from any perspective, this choice blows the other 2 out of the water.

I agree, and their new administration might be looking to make a big statement by switching to the conference with the best academic reputation (not that the Big10 is a slouch in that department). Nonetheless, PSU is a much, much bigger draw that Rutgers and UConn put together for football, and as for basketball, well we have enough BB schools IMO. We need another football power, and PSU fits the bill. It would also be nice for them to be able to renew their traditional rivalries with ND and Pitt. And it's not like the Big10 has helped their football program - they haven't played for the BCS title since they joined.

If we added Notre Dame and Penn State......the ACC would be "THE" conference for TV markets and recruiting.

It would be the perfect balance.
    -Football Powers
    -Basketball Powers
    -Elite Academics
-Similar fans (never considered the FSU students or fanbase to fit that of an SEC school)

  • If ND comes to the AC, then ND can name whoever else would make them happy.

  • Rutgers is the better choice

But I would even take Navy to get ND

Disagree with basically everything you just said.

  • UConn and Rutgers add ZERO money to the ACC. Might even cost the conference money.

Add those two teams together and the ACC is now the Big East. Not the place you want to be.....unless you don't care about football.

  • Rutgers is closer to NYC (it is less than 40 miles from Manhattan; UConn is actually a little closer to Boston, which is likely why BC opposes UConn), it has two times the number of students as UConn, has a bigger stadium, and as a bonus it is an AAU member. From a pure athletics prestige standpoint maybe the scales tip toward UConn thanks to their basketball success. But this is about money, and the money comes from TV. Rutgers isn't exactly sexy, and it doesn't exactly enchant the entire city of New York, but if you're trying to build a long-term in-road to the NYC TV market, then Rutgers is a better deal than UConn. Ultimately this would be about Notre Dame, but in picking the 16th team, I see plenty of good arguments for Rutgers over UConn.

  • I live basically in between Rutgers and Uconn. As for TV market, people follow Rutgers the way people goto Miami Hurricane football games. They don't. It's a city with a million other activities competing for your entertainment $,

As for UConn basketball, they will be fine after Calhoun leaves(possibily this year). It appears Kevin Ollie is the heir apparent. While as a Uconn hoop fan I'd rather go get someone like Tommy Amaker with a track record or make a run at the Butler coach(along those lines), Ollie has a ton of NBA experience and he should be able to recruit at the very least.

  • Rutgers is a dog until they have a decent amount of success. Then every ginny this side of Maine is on their jock. When they had that little mini-run of success those couple of years the Rutgers fans came out in force. Whoever compared them to Miami is about right.

Penn St would be a coup of monumental proportions. Penn St and ND fans, in the TV world, drwarf all others in the NE. It's not even close. The ND/Pitt vs PSU games would be blockbusters every single year up there.

I wonder if the admin feels the same way the PSU fans feel....slighted by the B1G. The matchups with the northern part of the ACC could very well mean more to them than the B1G matchups because of geography. Virginia, Maryland, New York, and Mass are pretty much border states to them.

  • I wonder if adding ND and U Conn might make ACC Women's basketball profitable.

No I'm not string it as a reason for U Conn over anyone else, but with ESPN making efforts to get the women's game televised (and remember UConn is ESPN's home team), match ups between UConn, ND, UNC and Duke and even our squad might garner enough ratings for women's basketball to pay for itself.

One less sport dragging on the budget could make a world of difference.

Really just an intriguing side thought, not an endorsement of the move.

  • My preference would be Rutgers, for selfish reasons, since I live in NYC. It would give us NYC Noles a chance to catch a game every couple of years. Plus, most ACC games would televised in the area, as opossed to now. UConn would bring more prestige basketball wise, but Rutgers would give us a huge piece of the NY/NJ market.

And tv ratings in NYC would indicate more folks watch Rutgers football games than UConn and Cuse. Saw the hard data last fall somewhere when expansion was in full-swing.

Doubt it. I don't think UConn women's basketball turns a profit so ACC women's basketball definitely wouldn't.

Wow. I just assumed with all the tv they're on they'd at least be slightly profitable. Don't doubt you're correct, though as on the whole only football and men's basketball are moneymakers.

Off topic, but does FSU baseball carry it's own weight?

It may break even. Really don't know, though. Probably doesn't (just assuming). It's almost impossible to make money in sports other than football and basketball. We have a top 10 baseball attendance every year so whether or not the program generates money, it carries its weight.

The US Department of Education says UConn women's basketball expenses are $400K more than revenue. But each school reports these figures slightly different and every school has tens of millions of non-allocated funds. It's safe to say few, if any, men's programs outside of football and basketball make money and no women's programs do.

  • Notre Dame & Penn State would be a phenomenal coup for sure. All of a sudden, the ACC becomes the most brand-rich conference. With Pitt coming aboard already, it would give those two a chance to reignite old rivalries.

If not PSU, the ACC should then add Rutgers. I think that the focus of the ACC should be to lockup key states north of Virginia with big state schools with massive followings, enthusiastic culture and deep alumni bases in the DC metropolitan area and Tri-State area. Rutgers fits in perfectly in between Maryland, Syracuse and Boston College. Plus it has better football and basketball facilities than UConn.

It'd be great if we could exchange Boston College for UConn. I'd also kick Wake Forest out and ask WVU are they having second-thoughts about playing in the B12 while I'm at it....

  • Penn St is not leaving the B10.

UCONN does not fit the modern ACC model of "good academics, and a priority on non-revenue sports".

Rutgers comes the closest, however keep in mind with ND in the ACC as the 15th school, they will have MAJOR input as to who team #16 is, as well they should.

As for Tv ratings, you get ND you don't really worry much about TV ratings in the NY market, you will rpetty much have it nailed. Imagine a ND-Miami game in Yankee Stadium???

ACC CCG in Met-Life Stadium....the ACC would become THE conference for the entire East Coast, which incidentally is the top population base in the country and has all but 3 of the top 10 television markets.

How does UConn not have good academics and non-revenue sports? Their baseball and both soccer programs are better than Rutgers'. Both basketball programs are better than Rutgers'. I know Rutgers has a decent women's basketball program but other than that I've no clue. UConn has higher freshman ACT/SAT scores than Syracuse and is ranked slightly higher in the US News than Cuse, too. So if Cuse is good enough why isn't UConn?

The ACC CG being played in northern NJ in early December sounds HORRIBLE. The northern Big East schools don't travel and they wouldn't show up to support their schools in the game. And no southern team is going to send ~25,000 fans to a game that far away with bowl season coming up.

    tricknole

  • "So if Cuse is good enough why isn't UConn? "

The honest answer is neither is good enough. Both are filler schools if you bring in a power house with them.

The ACC added two 'filler schools' when it had the lowest BCS TV contract. Now it is renegotiating to see if it can better it's TV contract under an incompetent Swofford. It is highly unlikely.

FSU football has always been outspent. What is changing is the difference it has been outspented is about to grow by a HUGE amount. Olympic sports will suffer as well.

Keep hearing our fan base make comments about other conferences making $15 Million more in TV contracts not being a big deal. That is insanely delusional.
