If ND football would join

  • The ACC full time and we add one more decent team in the mix would that save the ACC and make it worth staying?
Top 25 teams would be :

    -FSU
    -ND
    -Clemson
-Miami (If Golden stays and they get through the next few years I think they can return to a solid program)
-Va Tech (History has shown they can be a consistent top 25 program)
-Louisville (with Strong staying, I think he can build that program up and be respectable)

With the teams I've listed, that's 6 of them I can see consistently being a top 25 team. I think the ACC has better years in front of them and being patient might pay off in he long run. With that said, I would bounce to the big 12 or SEC in a heart beat if the opportunity presents itself. I'm just trying to look on the positive side of things in case we are stuck... Thoughts?

  • That scenario would really depend on the new TV deal, assuming a very new one could be made with those additions. Lack of good teams is only part of the issue, the other major thing is a crap TV deal that has an elevator payment scale and even at its best still pays us crap compared to the other conferences.

  • Not going to happen so don't worry about it.

    gonoles1

  • No, because even though that would look good and would give us the firepower to compete with these other conferences...

The ACC still has piss poor leadership who would continue to put our conference in a position to be uncompetitive with the likes of the SEC, B10, B12, and PAC.

  • ND does not have to (and probably will not) join this conference. I would not go holding out hope that ND is going to come save us.

ND has no reason to join but assuming they did, what other decent team is left out there?

  • ND won't be joining. What would they get out of it? WAY less money, less of a shot to get into the playoff, difficulty in scheduling historic rivals, and not to mention they have already set up a deal with the Orange Bowl as an independent. They already are owning the ACC in their current all but football deal.

    NorthStarNole

  • Nd is not joining now or anytime soon and them playing for the nc is worst case scenario for acc bc it will only increase their brand and their indep big bucks for them and they don't want to share or have to

    Dunole

  • Even if ND joined, who would be that one team that would make it worth it? Who would want to join the ACC from another power conference?

  • I think there was a shot of Notre Dame joining full time when all of this came out. Notre Dame hadn't sniffed the top 10 in years and was worried they'd be shut out of the playoff money.

Now they've gone undefeated and put themselves into the title game.

Game over for the ACC. Notre Dame would only have to make it into the playoff every 16 years to recoup any playoff money they forego from being in a super conference. And anybody looking at the college landscape would have to assume that if they can make it into the top 2 this y;ear, then they can easily make it into the top 4 at least once a decade and be way ahead of the money the ACC would bring them.

    So... Yeah... We Gotta bolt.

Explain WHY they will have to be in a conference. Will conference championships be deemed a necessity in the new playoff format?

Everythings fine when you are 12-0 but what if you are 10-2, you could get shut out.

They would get shut out going 11-1 in the ACC

    Dan86

  • Only a few vocal folks on warchant believe it is even remotely possible. For some reason there is a HARDCORE ACC above all else group there.

But we all have a better shot at banging super models tonight than ND joining the ACC.

Pipe dream.....it is all the ACC has left to save them.

They wouldn't get shut out b/c being in a conference will have no bearing on being in the playoff and we're talking about nd not boise st.

They have a sweet deal with the acc to add filler to their schedule if/when teams can't play them due to conference issues. Even if usc and stanford had to stop playing them (not likely), their following would make it easy to find new schools to play (seeing as it would almost certainly guarantee a sellout and/or big ratings).

The acc/nd deal essentially guarantees nd won't be joining a conference in football until their next nbc contract is up (10-15 years). Logic being ... the return to prominence this year has given them some leverage for the upcoming negotiations. NBC has very little sports programming and has recently started their own sport only channel. I believe they'll be willing to overspend a bit to keep their biggest brand that isn't the olympic games.

It might have been possible had they been mediocre again this year. Instead they're playing for the title and their best player almost won the heisman playing exclusively on defense. It couldn't have gone better for nd this year. They found a sucker conference to park their "other sports" and piggy back on their bowl alliances for football.

Really the only way the irish lose is if the whole super conference thing is realized. But if that happens the acc is toast anyways.

Unfortunately for the acc things could still get a much worse. Really hope FSU has a plan b,c and d.

  • Why would ND ever join? Would ND joining bring ACC revenue on par with the Big Ten and SEC? Who would be #16, Cincinnati or UConn? Would ND really change the perception of the ACC being the clear #5 out of 5 in the new BCS? Would ND up the payout of the new Orange Bowl contract?

It's about revenue. ND just doesn't appear to ever be joining the ACC and ACC revenue straight up blows.

    tricknole

  • The trend is going towards playoff tie ins to the super conferences. ND will probably be forced to join in the next 5-10 years if they want a fair shot at the playoffs. Just the way I see it......

  • JMO but I believe if ND football ends up in a conference, it's the Big 12

Maybe, but if a college football playoff is part of the ncaa I don't see how they would be able to only have it for members of super conferences. There would have to be a way for teams from other conferences to get in, and if there is, independents like nd will have the same guarantees.

Now if super conferences did come to fruition and they seceded from the ncaa and formed their own governing body it might be an issue for them.

Also saw this about the basketball schools in the big east ... interesting.

Big East's direction concerns conference's Catholic schools, sources say - ESPN

The seven Big East Catholic, non-FBS schools met with Big East commissioner Mike Aresco Sunday to express their concerns for the direction of the conference, multiple Big East sources confirmed to ESPN.com Monday.

  • Agreed, but as long as it's a 4 team playoff, there isn't much wiggle room at all for non "Supcon" teams to get in. I think the question we have to ask ourselves is what automatically qualifies you to get in, or disqualifies you?

Do you have to win your conference or division?
Do you have to finish in the top 5 or 10?

I just kind of feel like everybody in a conference will be pushing for qualifying marks that are advantageous for teams in conferences. Just imagine if 2 top 4 SEC teams duke it out in the SECCG while ND is sitting at #5? ND can squeak in and a big bad SEC team gets left out in the cold.

IMO, if we are going to do the "Supcon" thing, let's say you HAVE to at least win your division and finish the season top 5 to get in. I'm sorry, ND can sit out in the cold for all I care. It's time for them to play ball like every other team in America.

End of the day, isn't there supposed to be some sort of committee that is the final say on who gets in? So there is always going to be controversy.
