The 10 Most depressing states in the US included (based on mental health, sadly enough):

    1) Arkansas- Arkansas
    5) Mississippi- Ole Miss, Mississippi State
    3) Kentucky- Kentucky
    6) Missouri- Missouri
    9) Tennessee- Tennessee, Vanderbilt

The 10 poorest states included (based on median income)

    1) Mississippi- Ole Miss, Mississippi State
    2) Arkansas- Arkansas
    3) Tennessee- Tennessee, Vanderbilt
    5) Louisiana- LSU
    7) South Carolina- South Carolina
    8) Kentucky- Kentucky
    9) Alabama- Alabama, Auburn

These may explain the passion within the fan bases for these schools. It's a crutch for them, so to speak.

  • Now I understand how Ol' Miss was able to pull in such a good class.

  • I always forget that this isnt well known just because I studied it in school. There is so much "passion" in the Southeast because it really is the opiate of the masses. When you are from Alabama and you hate your job, you dont make enough money, etc etc but your team is badass its human nature to shift most of your personal identity and emotional investment to that team.

CORFING and BIRGING are two terms in sports most should understand.

No question, Cowherds ranting about this all the time...

Cities where there is little to nothing to do always have the most fanatic fan support. Cities with tons to do, have a lot more competition for people's attention.

Alabama can like sell it's stadium out for it's pre-season game (80k+).... They can sell tickets to their practice.

Man is this spot on. I am currently in Fayetteville, AR and I can honestly say that Arkansas sucks. There simply isnt enough to do here and everyone is obsessed with pigs.

Luckily I am being transferred (promoted) back to Tampa FL in about 3 weeks. I cannot wait to be back in the sunshine st and once again become a FSU Season Ticket holder.

  • I think we are looking at this from a football perspective only. I mean most of those schools don't give a flip about basketball outside of the occasional year they overachieve. I might have to think about why, but there is just something about football in the south that connects with people.

Maybe it's the toughness and whatever it takes attitude that we are drawn to? IDK?

  • The Doak

  • I think some of it has to do with the lack of pro sports teams that adds fuel to their college spirit.

The irony in this post good enough to eat.

Agree. Really think the pyschoanalysis in some of the above posts is a ridiculous stretch. Its a pretty simple correlation.

Agree, that's why we should pool all of our resources together and buy the Cowboys from Jerry then move them to Birmingham.
