How much longer can FB remain top dog

  • W/ such lame rules and the way they are enforced? So a DL in the midst of jumping slaps across the helmet of a qb and that's 15 yds (ATL/SF) or in the AFC game RL tackles 81 but 81 couldn't "make a defensive move" or some such bunk and that's another 15 but prick Brady can high spike Reed on the slide and nada? Give me a break.

Refs, rules, and over regulation are killing fb IMO.

  • When your getting sued for billion because of head injuries you do anything possible to make the sport safer. Some might be petty, but these guys do have to learn not to attack the head. That being said, some of the helmet to helmet penalties where the WR ducks down causing the hit is just stupid.

  • I definitely think football is at peak popularity right now. I don't think it has anything to do with the refs. With all the news about brain injuries coming out and our lack of understanding about concussions, how many parents are going to sign their kid up for pop warner? I've got a 2 month old, and I'm going to do everything in my power to steer him away from playing football.

It will remain top dog until it becomes cost prohibitive for the league. I do not see that happening.

Even then I am not sure because there is really nothing to take its place. The NBA domestically is a shadow of its former self and in all likelihood ascended due to some figures such as Jordan, Johnson & Bird being larger than life. Once those type of people leave it is impossible to maintain popularity.

Baseball is also on the descent. My guess if football is ever surpassed it will be by soccer.

As to football being too violent, look at the popularity of the UFC and MMA. They both fill the niche vacated by boxing. Most people over 45 remember when boxing was the 3rd most popular spectator sport after baseball & football.
