How many more DBs could we take?

  • So many good ones (not to mention great ones) out there still. Assuming the three we have stick to their word, how many more could we take?

What I read about Shelton seems to project him to the nickel. MJ is small but is considered a safety. And now White seems to be an athletic marvel that could potentially play anywhere back there (from what I gather). Obviously this staff values versatility as evidenced by T. Brooks, Joyner and Hunter.

I think we still need that possible lockdown CB (you could argue that they don't exist anymore since #2 but you get my drift). Clearly we'd take VH3 or Alexander in a heartbeat. And the staff seems to like Burns. But are we done looking at the second tier CBs like Baker or Robinson? And who else could we take at safety?

  • 5? 6? I know we will need to fill the back end of the hopper to keep up the quality depth needed for late in the games and to overcome injuries. What's the latest on Shelton? Haven't heard much about him recently. Anybody have their ear to the ground with him?

  • I think we want 4 and will take 5 if it's the right 5. The way I see it, Artie burns and alexander would be the home run finish to this class. VH3 is going to usf

  • I would guess as many as 4-5 more? I've seen many project Burns as as safety, so you hold a spot there for him and also keep one open for Marcel Harris. Then Baker + M. Alexander at corner, except Alexander likely won't commit without his brother having a scholarship, so that makes as many as 5 more DBs for a total of 8 in this class. That's a lot... something may have to give.

  • My current guess:

    CB Mackenzie Alexander
    CB Marquez White
    CB Adrian Baker
    S Artie Burns
    S Michael Johnson
    S/Sam Mackenro Alexander
    Sam/S Tyrell Lyons

I am actually one of the bigger fans of Sojourn shelton but our CB board has gotten too good too fast for me to predict we sign him.

  • I hope Shelton sticks. I thought I read he was really turning heads lately.

Also, is Lyons a pure LB at this point? I get that he's played safety already but I thought he was being recruited strictly as a linebaker.

He fits the Sam LB role perfectly. Coming in behind Moody.

He won the MVP at the DB position at the last combine he was at, which earned him an invite to that camp in Eugene, Oregon.

Shelton isn't lamarcus Joyner but he's a player. He will be at the very least a nickel or dime guy who can cover the slot and play special teams. Corner isn't like dl where you need a 10 deep

  • Tyrell Lyons is a SLB 100%. With his body as a high school JR, there is no way he is anything but a LB.

I have seen some people (including incredibly knowledgeable ones) say that this class will be around 23-25. Based on the numbers I am seeing, we have room for 26-29 in this class. Now, maybe Jimbo wants to make sure we have more for the 2014 class because the overall quality in that class will be better (due to our expected success in 2012), but I am not sure.

What I do know is, we technically have room for 6 DB's. We currently have 3 committed meaning 3 more spots open.

    Disclaimer on Defensive Back Recruiting:
    - Our CB's and S prospects are almost interchangeable. A lot of people have a hard time understanding this concept, but lets look at some examples.

Lamarcus Joyner - CB prospect, even started his career at CB... SAFETY
Terrance Brooks - CB prospect out of hs...SAFETY
    Tyler Hunter - S prospect...CORNER
Keelin Smith - size would indicate Safety...CORNER

My point is, in this defense a corner needs to be able to do the things a Safety can do and vice-versa. So I would not get caught up in the overall number of CB's or Safeties, but just the total number of DB's.

Looking at out DB board, there are only a FEW players that are strictly going to be 1 postion guys.
    SoJourn Shelton - 100% CB
    VH3 - 100% CB
Marcell Harris - 100% S (actually, he is a potential box player with his size)

Every other player we are recruiting can play BOTH positions if needed.

So back to original question. We can fit 3 more DB's in this class...
Marcell Harris is the big Safety we are after.
VH3 (unlikely) and Mackenzie are the big name CB's we are after.

Everyone else is up for grabs. So I think you are going to see our staff look at these big names and evaluate what kind of chance we have at them. If we only have a great chance at 1, then I think you see the staff fill up on DB's this summer. If we think we could land them all, then we won't take many.

    My guess at this time...
3 current commitments (Shelton, Johnson, White) + Harris, Burns, Baker

All names could be swapped out for Alexander twins, Robinson, Fant.

  • Looks like some may get their wish on Shelton. He is either wavering in his commitment today on Twitter, or looking for attention, but he seems to be legitimately interested in South Carolina now.

    No wish, just a prediction.

  • Hunter is playing nickel this year and safety next year, just like Brooks.

FSU isn't going to turn down Mackenzie Alexander, Mackenro Alexander, Artie Burns, Rashard Robinson, Leon McQuay, etc. They've evaulated and recruited very well at DB the last two classes, but have been low on numbers. They could load up this year if the right players want to come.

Imagine if Rhodes, Reid, and one of Joyner / Brooks are all high draft picks? FSU will have its pick of the litter.
