Honestly if Joe Pa were alive he would be headed to the...

  • Big House and I do not mean the stadium in Michigan! To cover up what he did is the worse thing I ever heard and his son is just an ass.

There is nothing wrong with defending family, but their timing and remarks come across as unsympathetic. They clearly care more about his legacy then the victims. Why not simply say something along the lines of the man we knew tried to do great things on and off the field however he obviously exercised poor judgement in this instance. He regretted his actions and felt sorry he didn't do more. Were sorry for the victims and hopefully we can all move on. We do not agree with the actions of the NCAA however it's not our decision.

They would come across fine if they acted that way. I dont think anyone thinks joe pa is some monster, I think he just made a mistake and acted selfishly. People act selfishly in our world it's human instinct. He did a lot of good things and one really bad thing. People forgive very quickly and if the family took that stance I think many of us would be more sympathetic to their cause. Just my 2 cents

great post, but most people want to crucify Joepa

    cuznchips28

  • Don't get our examination of his family confused with how I feel about him. I do think he should be crucified. He did wrong. He did not commit the original crime, but he enabled him to commit more. For that he is guilty and I have no sympathy.

    tmsmith2

  • How wild would that have been to see Paterno cuffed and taken to jail?

Crucified? No. Shamed, shunned and ostracized, YES. Guy put his public image and career ahead of protecting kids. He knew and knew it for YEARS......and then played innocent when it broke publicly. That makes him despicable. Doesnt matter how many other good things he did. That act erases all goodwill be built up over the years and then some.

He completely enabled. He may not have dropped the children off at the locker rooms but he provided or allowed many of the means necessary for it to continue knowing what had previously happened.

Hello.....wake up...,Obstruction of Justice, Perjury to a Grand Jury, Misprision of a Felony, Conspiracy, and if they dug a little deeper there would be a lot of organizational and racketeering criminal matters to investigate involving Godfather JoePa and the PSU Adminstration, PSU Police, and Second Mile in government provided "hush" money and extortion/criminal influence in the administration of justice. Hence PSU readily agreed to a consent decree without further investigation beyond their own limited scope Freeh Report.

Joepa wasn't charged with anything, that post was a waste of time.

  • Do you honestly think after that report came out and what the NCAA did today that Joe Pa would not have been charged? I will bet you that the former president, AD and others will be charged and convicted.

This. The only reason Paterno won't be charged is because they can't charge a dead person.

Explain to me what he knew

Based on the evidence uncovered in the case, we now know that he had direct knowledge that children were being molested and sodomized by one of his assistant coaches. He was made aware of this multiple times between 1998-2002 (that we are aware of per the evidence) and not only allowed it to continue, but took steps to cover it up for the person found guilty of the acts. He had multiple chances to make a very tough choice and take simple steps to report what he knew to authorities, or to bar Mr. Sandusky from using PSU facilities, and he did nothing.

I'm not going to get involved in whether he would be arrested if still alive, but based on the evidence uncovered in the Sandusky trial and in the Freeh investigation and subsequent report, the fact that he enabled a predator has been proven and well established. He did not do this by himself, but he is on the list of people who did it, and given his influence and the power he possessed, he is near the top of that list. It's my opinion that a large part of the viscousness directed at JoePa is due to how betrayed many of us feel by the revelation of the facts disclosed above. At the end of the day he taught many people great things, and contributed so much to American culture. However, the choices he made to sacrifice the well being of innocent kids for the sake of his reputation and that of PSUs' leaves an asterisk next to his name and a stigma attached to everything he ever did for generations. In the end, a man who was a hero to so many has been found a two faced coward. It's a shame, but there's really no defense for him at this point.

That is so factually incorrect it is not even funny. he knew of two incidents one of which in 98 that was investigated by authorities and ruled nothing sexual took place, so he would have had nothing to report. The other incident came in 01two years after Sandusky retired/was fired. His asst coach told him of what he might of saw. Joepa took this to his superiors who told him they would investigate it and from their investigation turned up nothing. After that the higher ups made the decision not to report, joepa was in no way involved in a cover up. So please tell me his other opportunities to report so called actions of Sandusky. Joepa was the head football coach he doesn't have the authority to keep anyone off campus. If you read the Freeh report you would know the facts, instead you have made up things to better support your argument. Try forming your own opinion from the actual facts instead of taking one from some hacky media report released to cater to the masses.

Ahh, the old "try forming your own opinion" defense.

    Works every time.........

I did that, based on what I have read and concluded. My opinion is at odds with yours, so you resort to these tactics..........

Who knew Jay Paterno was a member of this board?

Tell me how in anyway this absolves him of any wrongdoing. Both he and mcqueary had an obligation to contact the proper authorities. They did not. This isn't some media conspiracy to drag paterno's name through the mud. These events actually took place and paterno is at the center of the controversy due to a disgusting lack of action on his part. If you want to argue the NCAA had no place in levying the penalties they did. Fine. I disagree, but at least that's a cogent argument one can make.
