Had a chance to hear Jimbo talk today...

  • Couple notes I gathered....he was talking to someone about recruiting and mentioned that we have 9 commitments for 2014. Only 7 on the 247 list. He talked about why he loves Pruitt, Sunseri, and Kelly and talked about their ability to attack offenses. He actually said its time to hit some people and create turnovers. Made it a point to mention that we will have alot of packages for 3rd down situations.

  • Very interesting...

It begs the question on why he is in love with an aggressive defensive style, when he we wasnt when he hired Stoops.

Perhaps he has realized that Stoops style has weaknesses than can be exploited by very average offenses (NC State 2nd half, UF)

Or maybe Stoops was less "miltiple" than we thought he was going to be?

Maybe he just wants a change?

I realize teams do this all the time...Hell, FSU will have changed schemes 3 times in 5 years.

Anyone have any thoughts on why he is so in love with a change all of a sudden?

  • We need turnovers bad, our ability to get the ball back really hurt us since we were prone to fumble and the occasional pick which we will see a lot more of this year with a new Qb

I remember when Stoops was introduced to us that he promised lots of turnovers. Said his defenses were designed to produce them. As much as I appreciated what he did for us defensively, the lack of turnovers was always a huge disappointment.

Seems very doubtful at this point...

Wonder who #8 and #9 are

  • too bad you didnt mention anything about jimbo mentioning an attacking, aggressive offense

  • We didn't produce crap for turnovers last year but I believe we were far and away #1 in the nation in forcing three and outs.

I want an attacking, turnover forcing machine as a defense too. But Stoops had us as a top 3 defense in back to back seasons. Gonna be tough to duplicate that much less improve upon it to be honest.

Yeah...I couldve sworn I heard that too.

I am in the camp of "Stoops is what we needed at the time" w the roster flipping, and coming off a historically terrible defensive year. Now that we got the horses, its time to let them out of the stable a little.

But I do think sometimes Stoops isnt as "multiple" as we thought he was gonna be.

  • I look at the times we lost or had tough games last year and almost always the opposing defenses were aggressive. NCST, VT, and UF. All aggressive, in your face, style of play.

I think Jimbo recognizes how that style turned the momentum on big hits and turnovers. I just know that I kept longing for Mickey's "pin our ears back" style several times last year and it never happened. This would be a good thing to mix in given our personnel.

Stoops D was sound fundamentally but we seemed to always lose the turnover battle which is amazing that we only lost 2 games. Hopefully Pruitt can deliver on more picks and fumbles.

Producing 3 and outs is great, a lot more than most defenses can say, but forcing the 3 and outs last year rarely flipped field position. That was a time we missed Greg Reid the most. Our defense forced the punt, but often times, we had guys back their too timid to catch and return, make stupid decisions trying to catch in traffic, or just let the ball hit and roll. The 3 and outs combined with the lackluster punt return team negated that advantage. Our offense rarely got a short field to work with. I will gladly take a few less 3 and outs, a few busted coverages, for a chance for our talent to be used to its advantage on defense, creating turnovers and flipping the field that way rather than relying on special teams.

you make a good point. and i agree with some of it. but last year, though the defense wasn't forcing game changing turnovers, it was suffocating. teams would look up after a few possessions and all of a sudden it's 14+ to 0 and they're punting the ball again. now a lot of this had to do with just how much better we were than everyone else in the acc (minus clemson). we forced teams to become one dimensional very quick.

i think in no game was that more apparent than the wake forest game, when CT stole the show. a punt return from greene and a couple CT runs and the game was over because wake (like the vast majority of college football) needs balance to be effective. we took that away quickly many times last year.

All I can think of is that he was lumping in the 2015 commitments (2- Derwin James and Deandre Johnson) and he may have simploy misspoke. I don't believe there are any silents at this point for 2014.
