Georgia Tech, Maryland, NC State and Virgina Tech

  • I am asking this because I don’t know and you are in the same conference. I hear these names mentioned between the Big 12 and the SEC (North Carolina State, Virginia Tech, Maryland, Virginia, and Georgia Tech). What are the positives and negatives they would bring to a new conference?

I hear NC State to the SEC. Would they leave Duke and NC and do they have a large following?

  • GT is a royal PITA...funky offense that is effective with a good QB/RB. Nightmare to prep for w/ a blocking style rumored to cause leg injuries to DL

We hear that GT may have actually moved ahead of Clemson, making Clemson #13.

  • GT is in Atlanta market and has very good academics. Their football is cyclical and can be pretty good every couple of years. Basketball is solid. Good recruiting grounds.

VT is in the DC metro market. Something like 6-8 years straight of 10 win seasons. Solid academics and overall good athletics.

Clemson is not far from Atlanta. Bigtime commitment to football. Very good baseball and good basketball. The 2nd best place to see a game in the ACC behind FSU and barely ahead of VT.

Maryland's value is their location. Big DC metro market. More basketball school than anything. Football is once a decade decent.

NCST is mediocre across the board and does not carry the state viewers. They suck. Let SEC have em. Not sure why they want em.

Virginia is an excellent academic institution. Football is on the rise. Solid athletic teams.

I hope the Big 12 expansion is set to add at least 4 teams, preferably 6 with 5 being FSU, VT, Miami, GT, and Clemson. UNC would be good but that would be a tough deal to get done.

VT and NC State to SEC.

Raleigh-Durham and Charlotte are 24 & 25 media markets. NC has 4 in the Top 50. Plus some of the best recruiting area for SEC over the years.

  • Virginia? What? They likely wouldn't leave UNC. Oh, and they'd be a horrible addition.

VT would be a great add for football. Large state. Great recruiting area. Meh in other sports other than track. Long-standing "series" with FSU in football.

Maryland should be better in football and basketball than they have been lately. Won a title in basketball not long ago and are capable of being a consistent bowl team with the right coach but probably nothing more. I like them mainly for the northern VA/DC/MD market and recruiting area. We hit that area up pretty hard.

GT doesn't have a good all around AD I don't think but are usually good in the big 3 (which is all that matters) and men's golf. Great market. Great recruiting. Closest school to FSU. Minor rivalry between FSU and GT since we joined the ACC. I'd love this add. They just don't have a HUGE following despite their location. They're smallish for a public school and don't have many of the "easy" majors many athletes take.

NC State: Decent fanbase. Solid facilities. Good recruiting state which we only use for basketball it seems. Decent at the big 3 sports. They'd be good "filler" imo.

My top 7 to come with FSU to the Big 12:
    1. Miami - All day. Every day.
    2. Clemson
    3. Georgia Tech
    4. Virginia Tech - Proximity to FSU is the only reason they're down this far.
    5. Maryland - Markets/Recruiting puts them ahead of UL.
    6. Louisville - I think the Big 12 needs another basketball elite. There are several really good programs in the Big 12 right now but UL would be like another KU.
    7. Pittsburgh - Mainly for the rivalry with WVU.

Not really interested in UNC, UVA, NC State, UC, Rutgers or anyone else. Absolutely, 100% against BYU which some people are stupidly grouping in with FSU. How's that make us want to join the Big 12?

Thank you. I think the Pac 12 will be forced to expand and I think they will add Boise and BYU. BYU has a lot of TV's and that would put them back with Utah. TV loves the underdog and that is why I say Boise and I also feel they earned their place in the dance.

I am an easy sell on Clemson. We go there every year with a friend of mine and it is the best of times.

I'll say it again, it sounds more and more like ND is considering joining a conference...if they are not 1-2 on your list, something's wrong. BYU has its own network and a huge following. They would only be added b/c of tv sets.

I was scrolling through this thread going crazy how no one has mentioned Notre Dame and then you got them in the last post haha. It's starting to sound like ND will get squeezed out of the championship race so they may join a conference. Everyone says big 10 but they don't seem to be shopping for additions. The only thing that ND has is that they always seem to schedule pretty decently so they may be ok with SOS in the new format.

  • Big 12 would be wise to accept Clemson AND Ga Tech.

If you can have two huge football schools in FSU and Clemson and add a HUGE football state in between them, that would be a great move.

The only issue is, you need a 4th to even it out at 14.

Va Tech and NC State most likely to SEC (unless they stay at 14).

How long would you wait for Notre Dame?

The travel expenses are crazy for FSU and Clemson if 2 other east coast teams aren't added.

You can only hear were are ND and we are not interested so many times before you start believing it. Yes, I would take them but it appears there are numerous other schools that really want to in the big 12. I think they will join in part because they can have Irish TV, and if they don’t it may be too late.

I like Louisville, but not at the expense of FSU, Clemson or GT. However, anyone that wants to be here as much as they do, should be. They have a new staduim and a great basketball team that would add tradition to our conference, and I believe they will spend a lot of their new found money making their sports team better. They also offer a good bridge between the northeast and midwest.

I think people focus only the sexy teams today and not what they could be in a few years with the additional money. 10 years ago no one wanted TCU and I think they will be a great additional for years to come. They did what they did with less money than what the Big East was paying.

And finally, I think they were promised something when WVU was added over them.

I understand, but just from an FSU perspective, it badly needs nearby rivals.

It needs that to reduce cost (HUGE issue), it needs it so it can sell it to some fans who aren't sure that we have nearby rivals, etc.

That means some combination of Ga Tech, Miami, and Clemson. Maybe some other ACC teams, but not so much (I do love Va Tech...but think they are SEC).

Louisville, doesn't do much for FSU. A little, but not much.

I have posted for months, even before this actually started that I would like FSU, Clemson, GT and even Miami with all their issues. But, it does not appear Miami wants us.

I hate the added travel for the kids and the families, and that is why I was asking about VT, NC State and Maryland. Because without them we are limited unless another Florida school is added. I know the travel costs are going to increase for all of us, but it appears the money keeps increasing with added teams and the new bowl game.

  • Louisville adds more than Maryland and gives WVU a much needed rival nearby. They are even an old Metro rival for us.

I would prefer Miami in the equation but even Miami fans Shalala plans on cutting way back on sports to focus on academics....normaly the BOT could force her but the Shapiro fiasco gave her all the leverage she needed.

FSU, Clemson this year and Louisville and Ga Tech next unless ND decides to join which I still think they end up in the B1G.

NC State and Va Tech to the SEC

We have a division of FSU, Clemson, Ga Tach, WVU, Louisville plus maybe TCU and ISU.

I think we get ND because of the 3rd tier rights if they join. It looks like ESPN may have over paided for the Longhorn Network, but ND could even get more. If all these teams are added, how many games will actually fall to the 3rd tier because it could be hard for the networks to pick up that many quaility games. .

I don't give a crap about ND. They would not be high on MY list simply because of that. I understand their value. Two different things.

If it wound up being something like FSU, Clemson, Miami, GT, UL and ND I wouldn't care. I just want Miami to come along first and foremost and I want at least one of GT or Clemson.
