  • What's your honest prediction for Matthew Thomas? I think he plays a very similar role to what Tyriq McCord did in Miami last year. Thomas is way beyond McCord as a player and McCord had 4.5 sacks.

I think Thomas gets maybe one start this year when two guys are out. He gets 30tckls, 6sacks, 2 FF.

Year two he goes wild. 80, 12, 5

    fsufsu

  • Doubt he plays many meaningful snaps this year

Afterall we're not Miami bad at LB

  • In two years with our LB core we will be amazing .

Imagine Daub and MT6 out there wrecking kids

MT6 will be a first round pick if he keeps up his work ethic.

    Nole of 16

  • I think he needs to be quicker than strong and he can have a game high of 7 tkls, 2.5tfl, 1 sack. On the season about 30-40 tlks (mostly kickoff coverage) and about 4.5 sacks with a couple FF and FR.

If Jeremy Pruitt created an X-factor player for his defense it would be Matthew Thomas. Plus we are mixing in a lot of 3-4, that's a 33% increase in LB pt opportunities.

He can blitz like a super star from the Mike position. Just watch, hard working, smart kid. He will show up at 225+ this summer and be 230 for the season.

Yeah but we have quiet a few talented LBs that are more college ready

  • No idea on stats, but I think Thomas has a huge impact. He is too versatile not to. He can be used so many ways.

  • Our S&C program is way ahead of Miami's so unless he's Telvin Smith 2.0, I expect him to put on 10-15 lbs of good weight between June and the start of fall practice.

My expectations are for him to be a special teams demon in year 1. I also think he'll have a role in some of the 3-4 pressure packages where he can use his speed and athleticism to rush off the edge.

Overall, because of the offenses we'll play and the depth we have, I expect to see more DB's on the field than LB's. Guys like Karlos Williams, Tyler Hunter, PJ Williams, Colin Blake, Jalen Ramsey will play the Star and Money positions in the new defense which potentially takes LB's off the field.

That'll limit the production of all the LB's not named Christian Jones and Telvin Smith

  • One thing that goes into my prediction is that I dont believe we have a close game until Clemson. Nevada will be well coached but we will merk them and Pitt. BC, BC, and Maryland will be games that mostly 2nd and 3rd teamers finish out.

Disagree...Thomas will play a lot of meaningful snaps. His coverage ability alone will get him a lot of snaps.

  • I think when we go 3/4 and its a obvious passing situation he'll be apart of that package. I think Thomas is Pruitts CJ Mosley. Christian Jones will be a pass rushing monster in that package IMHO

I am very excited for this. I don't complain about Stoop's D too much, but my one internal gripe was taking CJ from one of the things he does best: rushing the passer. He was the best of any of our LBs at that the last couple years and we didn't let him do it much at all after he changed to WLB.

  • He's the next Marvin Brooks. Crown him!!! weights_bar

All I know is Bradham wasn't all that special depending on your definition of special. So far Jones has been eh, but I predict that will change under Pruit. I don't even know if he was better than them coming out of high school, maybe? Kid has got a number of kids who have multiple years in a college S&C program and playing the game at a very high speed. MT6 won't redshirt, but I wouldn't pencil him in as a starter this year.

IMO, if by "x factor player" you mean the Jarvis Jones type, then my 2 deep right now would be CJ then Telvin. They've earned it.

  • Northrup is a LB I think is going to exceed most casual fans expectations. The kid did something that only 2 other LBs in the history of FSU did their senior year. Please correct me if I have my stats wrong. He had 200 tackles his senior year in HS. I think I'm going to get this wrong, but I think it was a combo of Marvin Jones/Derrick Brooks/Sam Cowart, then Northrup. To me that shows this kid has a high football IQ, a nose for the ball, and the skill to get there. If he is anything like the other 3 I named, we are blessed. I'm keeping an eye on him.

I would agree, I think the day MT steps on the practice field he is THE most talented LB at FSU. How fast can he pick up scheme's is the question. His coverage abilities are already beyond most if not all of our starters. Miami HS fans said MT was the hardest hitter to come out of that city in years. I like his chances of contributing early. BTW, think Jalen Ramsey has a Darby-like freshman year. Dude is the truth.

    He said talent, not best.

Best LB means he would have the most developed, prepared talent. Most talented just means that even though he may not play much, may not know much, he has the most TALENT.

I would put MT unequivocally over everyone else on our roster. We don't have another LB in his league. Christian Jones is a less limited athlete than Bradham and MT is less limited than CJones. Be excited, no one is knocking CJ or Telvin....they just arent as talented as MT6

    What exactly define TALENT:

Size, Speed, Quickness, Change of Direction, Instincts, Intelligence, Intangibles??

Whatever attributes define talent for you, what makes you certain that he exceeds the guys we already have?

I guess I need some parameters and definitions to fully understand how a 5* LB who's not on campus yet is already more talented than the 5* and 4* LBs we already have.

  • Does anybody else think MT6 needs to hit the weight room at least a little before he's even in the discussion for best LB?

Height, length, speed, agility, fluidity, innate influential nature to their game, leadership, etc etc etc. You know good and well what "talent" is you are just mildly offended that I am saying he's got more than guys on our roster. It's just the truth. Ask JC Schurburt, Gerry Hamilton, Chris Nee, Josh Newberg.....they'll put MT at the top.

He's really really special. Christian Jones was a big safety that projected to LB who had shown some huge upside playing solid comp in the Winter Park area. Matthew Thomas has been THE dominant force on Booker T Washington's defense in the heart of 8A Miami football since midway through his Sophomore year.

I'm not offended at all, I just think it's a silly statement to make before the kid steps foot on campus.

All of the things you named that define talent just means he'd perform really well in a combine type setting. We've seen our share of those guys come and go that couldn't play a lick.

Again, I'm not knocking MT at all. I fully expect him to be a stud and potential 3 and done type guy. I'm just not ready to crown him as the most talented LB we have right now.

You obviously didnt read my posts nor know much about MT if you suggested he's not proven on the field. Forget it. If you think MT is just another kid we have to sit back and see if they can cut it then its just gonna be Boehner vs Barack on tax rates for us to keep discussing it.

Although Boehner isn't really offering too much resistance (wuss), so maybe you can convince him.
