  • Haplea was brought on because he's a HECK of a blocker. That's what FSU wants out of him. I think Hicks will move back to DE.

So unless he catches on pretty well, should he RS?

Imo, no. We have one TE with significant game experience, two guys with minimal experience and a true frosh. Haplea won't be redshirting (I assume he still has one available?) and I highly doubt he would've come here if we told him he might redshirt.

I'll give the Penn State fans some props, though. I thought their comments have represented themselves and their university poorly throughout this scandal but they're taking Haplea's transfer in stride. (Probably helps that he wasn't some All American.)

After doing a bit of reading on him, he seems to be another in the vein of a pass catching WR, not a blocking TE for those who were wondering, any PSU fans feel free to confirm or correct me.

I would say he is a mix of both. Quick summary:

Highly touted out of HS and was perhaps unfairly forced into action as a true freshmen (injuries) when he was only 225lbs or so. Would have been second team as a sophomore but our starter blew out an ACL. Has since balked up to 250lbs or so and become a much better blocker. Seems to have good hands and decent speed but the old regime totally underutilized the TE so don't be fooled by his stats. Obviously O'Brien does utilize the TE but Haplea was beaten out of a RS Freshmen in the spring for the "Y"TE position (pass catching TE) and supposedly had to be talked out of transferring at that time. Supposedly a very good kid and hard worker.

Long story short, he's got experience, has a RS to burn, and some ability, so you may have something. Like I said, he seems like a good kid so people are happy for him.

I disagree. We have O'Leary and Tye who can catch the ball. What killed our Offense last season was run blocking. Hicks to TE has helped. Haplea has caught about 6 passes in his entire career. He is being brought in as insurance for the running game. Now we have Hicks and Haplea to help the OL out and that's huge. Much better 2 TE runblocking set. Great move IMO by Fisher. BTW, Hicks has dropped his weight down 15-20 lbs, he's staying at TE IMO.

  • I don't know where the expectation that Tye will be a contributor is coming from. If the coaching staff felt that way, they may not have moved Hicks, and they certainly wouldn't have pursued Haplea.

I don't know. 6'4" 248 doesn't scream blocking TE to me although all of our TEs are expected to be able to block.
