Jimbo Fisher: "It was brought to my attention I used a word during today's conference that I did not intend to use. That's not the way I think. It was a poor choice of words. I didn't mean to offend anyone in any way. Please accept my sincere apology."

I hate that we live in a society where people have to apologize for what they say. Clearly he didn't mean it in an offensive manner towards "special needs" individuals.

I think it's appropriate that he apologized. If you had a child with mental retardation, it would come across as, at least, annoying. Obviously he didn't mean to insult special needs kids, but that doesn't make it a perfectly cool choice of words.

Just wanted to add this... I think it is pretty clear that of all the words in the dictionary there are only a handful (or less) that I do not tolerate. Due to my personal connections with down syndrome children, this is one of them. It is so easy to substitute any number of words.

I understand that, I think what I am getting at we all say stuff we shouldn't when we are riled up, and if anyone (not anyone here) thinks Jimbo hates special needs kids or people because he said that is ridiculous.
I winced when I heard it, and I really hope his apology closes it.

Nobody thinks Jimbo has anything against special needs kids. Some words are polite and others aren't. Good people let impolite words slip sometimes, and they apologize and move on. It's not a big deal--unless they dig in and refuse to apologize, as some seem to think Jimbo should have done.
The point is not that Jimbo thinks retarded people suck. It's that he thinks the BCS sucks and said so by comparing it to retarded people. People who work with retarded people are saying "can't we say something is stupid and sucks without saying it's similar to these people we care about?"
Any defense of insensitivity is going to be a hard sell with me, and judging from Jimbo's classy apology which completely closes the issue for me, it would be a hard sell with him too.
