Fisher has another vacancy to fill

  • NCAA rule changes aren't immediate so all the coaches can't be on the road at once yet. They also aren't doing any coaching or training with current players. So being a man down isn't a big deal right now. With Jimbo running the offense and everything about Coley leaving being such a shock I doubt Fisher had this scenario on the radar. Much better for him to focus on recruiting now, then evaluate the staff, decide if you are going after an OC or position coach and find a guy.

If Jimbo goes after an OC it will be a big deal because no quality OC is coming if he can't call plays and implement his own gameplan. So Fisher has to not only find someone who knows what he is doing but a guy who he respects and can see eye to eye with. Much too big an undertaking to jam in the homestretch of recruiting.

How about the OC from Stanford?

I don't know if people are serious or not with this suggestion, but it keeps popping up. Stanford's (ex) OC was hired by the Colts---and even if he hadn't gone to the NFL, do you honestly think he's going to leave Stanford, a premier offensive team that can afford to pay him a ton (thanks to Luck's donations specifically to pay for that position)???

Sorry, but there are dreams and then there are lunacies.

Yeah seems a bit weird to see all the Pep Hamilton mentions. I assume people have him confused with the Co OC at Stanford. This guy......

Yup, from Tallahassee. Only problem is he is the OL coach. I'd do backflips if we could trade him for Trickett.

A guy like Jimbo is pulling 15 hour days right now. He can't spend 1.5 on calling around for a coach? We are only after about 15 guys right now with a staff helping him out. He has the time.

Agree. I have never understood the thinking that taking your time gives one a better chance at a better hire. I think this needs to happen ASAP.

Makes sense. Might as well take your time at this point and make the right hire.

    Indeed +1

Jimbo never tosses the press a bone. If he's got something in the works, we probably won't know until it's almost a done deal.

  • Like bud and Ingram said in their latest podcast. This hire will probably be a minority candidate with ties to south Florida. The south Florida connection is a certain.

That's fine by me. I don't need to know what's going on. I just hope something is going on. I think WAITING is a big mistake.

Why? We're not really hiring a major position coach, we're hiring a recruiter---it's most likely too late for someone to hop on the staff and make a major impact in this year's recruiting cycle. So what's the harm in waiting and making a more sound decision?

  • I think Mike Caneles would be a good fit . A very good QB coach and very smart OC.

Why does waiting result in the more sound decision? That's precisely the logic that I am questioning. If it's a recruiter, I want every single day I can get out of that recruiter even if it's only an extra week 1 or 2 years before NSD. Plus, while a new recruiter isn't going to establish relationships in a short period of time, the presence of a strong south Florida personality on staff MIGHT be just some very slight help in the Thomas, Coley, and Kirkland sweepstakes. Something is better than nothing. For instance, you don't think the hire of someone like Ice Harris would have any effect on this year's class?

You don't feel that taking the necessary time to make a sound decision in the hiring process is warranted? Plus, unless Harris has already taken and passed the NCAA's recruiting test, he would be of no use to the 2013 class.
