FSU's Manuel wins MVP, defenders win respect at Senior Bowl

  • The one-on-one opportunities prospects are put through during the week of practice at the Senior Bowl is more valued by scouts than the actual game, which is why most talent evaluators leave Mobile, Ala., long before kickoff.

However, there is something to be said for prospects who save their best performances for the game itself.

Florida State's E.J. Manuel was the most impressive of the quarterbacks, leading the South to touchdowns on his first two drives and all three scores overall, earning him Most Valuable Player in the South's 21-16 victory.

The 6-foot-4, 237-pound Manuel demonstrated the dual-threat capabilities so popular right now in scouting circles, scampering up the middle for one score and showing beautiful touch on a 20-yard strike to Alabama tight end Michael Williams moments later for another.

Manuel was replaced by Tyler Wilson and Landry Jones, who were less effective. Manuel returned in the second half, leading the South on a 13-play drive for its only other score of the game. Although the South relied on its running game on this drive, Manuel's one completion was an impressive throw. While it only went for six yards, Manuel was forced to reset and showed a much quicker release than he normally uses, demonstrating the ability to adjust as necessary and hitting Stanford running back Stepfan Taylor for a first down on third-and-4.

Though NFL scouts value the 1-on-1 matchups of the Senior Bowl practices more than the all-star game itself, prospects who play well Saturday certainly can help their cause. By leading the South team to all three scores in a 21-16 victory, Florida State quarterback E.J. Manuel won MVP. It was a handful of defensive prospects who might have boosted their pro stock even more, however.

  • He was by far the best looking quarterback out there, Glennon included. Happy for that young man. He and all the other kids represented FSU very well.

  • From the AP:

EJ Manuel's January couldn't have gone much better on the field. More importantly, he's hoping for a similarly happy February for his family.

The Florida State quarterback passed for a touchdown and rushed for another on the South's first two drives in a 21-16 victory over the North in the Senior Bowl on Saturday, and was named Most Outstanding Player.

Now, he can try to be the MOS — Most Outstanding Son. His mother, Jackie Manuel, who was diagnosed with breast cancer before the season, has been recovering from her final round of chemotherapy, and Manuel said she's scheduled to have surgery on Feb. 1.

"That's kind of been my motivation," Manuel said. "I call my mom every single day and tell her I love her. I never miss a day.

"They'll be sending that award home to her. I won that award for her. I went out there and played well for her. I'm happy I was able to do it."

And even happier to return to her side in Virginia for a few days, instead of just squeezing in Skype and Facetime sessions.

It was a great finish for Manuel to a month that began with a 291-yard performance in an Orange Bowl victory over Northern Illinois.

Manuel and running backs Stepfan Taylor and Mike James combined to put the game for senior NFL prospects away on the South's final drive. Stanford's Taylor carried five times for 32 yards and caught a 6-yard pass from Manuel.

Manuel converted a fourth-and-1 play on a sneak to set up a 5-yard touchdown run for Miami's James with 2:41 left. He completed 7 of 10 passes for 76 yards with a 20-yard touchdown pass to Alabama tight end Michael Williams. He also scored on a 2-yard run.

  • Congrats to EJ. Made himself some money this week.

EJ makes that 4 Jimbo QBs who have won Senior Bowl MVP in 20 years. Jamarcus Russell went pro his junior year - so anyone want to take a guess without looking who the other 3 are?

Considering he's the only other Auburn QB I can think of that went to the senior bowl, that gets my vote.

  • I am happy for EJ for sure. But as a fan it almost feels like a "oh what could have been moment". He had some GREAT games (Clemson this year, WVU bowl game, etc) but was inconsistent beyond belief (granted our OL didn't always help him much).
