FSU to B12 talk is about to explode

  • bwhnoles said...

President's and AD's are hired and fired by the BOT which is made of Seminoles that will be here long after the current President and AD.

Haggard just showed the BOT's hand and put the ACC on notice that FSU is officially on the market.

He also put Slive and the SEC on notice that they are about to have the Big 12 all over their landscape if they do not give FSU an invite. Haggard is a genius because he has just put FSU in a win - win - win situation between the 3 conferences. My heavy bet is that the SEC blinks and invites FSU.

  • I think FSU will now be leaving the ACC. I think that's the best move long term. Jim Smith and Andy Haggard understand what is necessary for FSU to compete with the big boys. I wasn't on the Big 12 bandwagon but could you imagine.

    FSU
    Texas
    OU
    WV
    TCU
    Oklahoma State
    Clemson

    Baylor
    Texas Tech

The move is necessary because now the BCS National Champion does not have to come from the SEC but could also come from the Big 12 if this move happens.

I agree with this. Now it has all 3 conferences wondering. I think the acc is out of it though(at least I hope). I can't wait to see what is going to unfold.

Also smart from the standpoint that this coming the BOT Chair keeps Spetman's and Barron's working relationship with ACC officials intact.

As someone who plays the "bad cop" role for his organization in negotiations.....it is better coming from a authority position outside of day to day operations.

You might be right about the SEC though since the only reason they offered us a bid before was to keep the ACC out of Florida.....the ACC doesn't scare the SEC anymore but a resurgent Big12 does.

  • As some of us have posted, FSU is supposed to be the ACC'S bellcow. This contract is partially our fault for sucking, by our standards, the past 10 years.

That said, if the money is that much better in the big 12 it would be tough to say no.

I agree with the USC sr poster, um would also be a good addition-probably better than Clemson . Both coming would be great. Um is worth more in a contract than A&M. They bring many more viewers. A heck of a lot better than Louisville.

Teams got to keep their tier 3 rights for bball but not football? WTH?

  • Your BOT chairman is misinformed about the tier 3 bball rights. ESPN owns them just like the football rights, no difference.

In the end, it really doesn't matter. ACC got a terrible deal and is the 5th highest paid conference behind the SEC, Big 12, Big 10 and Pac 12. The football schools should look elsewhere, as it seems they are, and allow Tobacco Road to have their little basketball conference.

So that just makes the ACC contract even worse. We can keep those rights, get another home game and their contract does not even factor in a championship game! Time to move on.

  • From the Yahoo story in the link

The first shock to the system hit Wednesday, when the ACC came to terms with ESPN on a 15-year, $3.6 billion agreement that sure sounded good in the press release. Each school was supposedly getting an additional $4 million a year. The average would be $17.1 million annually. Not bad, it seemed.
The reality was bad, however. The initial bump in television revenue is actually just over $1 million a year, sources said, and a total in the $12 million range next season. The deal is back loaded so the bigger money comes in escalator provisions that, considering how broadcast rights keep growing, probably will be below market by the time any sizeable gains are realized.
That additional $4 million per school, per year? That won’t come until 2021, nine years in, sources said.

Florida State trustee may have lit the fuse on a potential move to the Big 12 - Yahoo! Sports

From Yahoo! Sports: An errant TV contract with ESPN angered several institutions, and the chairman of FSU's board of trustees says the school may consider changing conferences.

At this point I don't think that matters. It had the desired effect. It stirred the hornets nest which was already pissed about the Tobacco Road favoritism and everyone is in a frenzy.

  • So in the ACC we'd get about 15 mill a year from tv whereas in the Big 12 we'd get about 32. We'd spend an extra, let's say, 3 mill a year on travel expenses across all sports.

Net gain = ~14 mill a year. First two things we should do are finish the IPF and balance the athletic budget likely with a little left over to kick back to the school. Everyone is hugging it out at that point.

  • I wonder what the ACC TV Deal would be if FSU, Clemson and Miami left and joined louisville in a 14 team big 12.

I would guess the deal would be for 8 million per team, maybe less.

By the way, as a neutral 3rd party living 2,500 miles away who doesn't have a vested interest either way (although I've always had a lot of respect for both FSU and Texas), I don't know why you guys wouldn't go to the B12.

I'm just trying to get a sense of why you would want to leave as well. Until the terms of the ACC TV deal came out, I couldn't come up with a great reason for FSU changing conferences.

Here's a quote from the Texas A&M message board from a poster that did a little basic math:

    - The ACC is getting $3.6B over 15 years for 14 teams with a footprint of 95 Million people.

    - The Big 12 is getting $2.6B over 13 years for 10 teams with a footprint of 37 Million people.

    That means:

    - ESPN/Fox are paying $5.41/yr for every person in the Big12 footprint (w/ no Championship Game)
    - ESPN is paying $2.53/yr for every person in the ACC footprint (w/ a Championship Game)

I would not be surprised if the ratings/person are higher within the Big 12. But, with most (not all) cable revenue tied to subscribers over advertising (which is ratings driven). Do you really think Big 12 is worth 2.1x more per person than the ACC?

    Conclusion:
FSU fans must be right. That ACC Commissioner is a complete tool and should be brought up on criminal charges. There is no way he can justify having every team in the ACC making anything less than $25M/yr - $30M/yr.

  • I've got to say, as a Texas Aggie--I think I'm for the move. I would love to see texas university rot on the vine in essentially a 2 team conference. But, if FSU plus one other team moves to the Big12, then the SEC will swoop in and take Va Tech and probably NCState. The ACC will then die and be absorbed by the remaining conferences.

I just hope you know what your getting into. Dealing with texas university drove us out of the conference. At least we were in their backyard and could keep them in check. Hard to monitor their "shenanigans" from 1000 miles away.

I know 90% af all sports conversations revolve around football, but you'll see a drop in the quality of your non-revenue sports. texas will always be competitive, but the rest of the big 12--not so much. I understand that FSU has been a real player in the Director's Cup. Quality of competition drops for non-revenue sports.

You left because you got tired of living in UT's shadow. Texas, Oklahoma and every other Big12 school are doing just fine without aggy.

Back to business. I believe the real question here is did the Big12 contact FSU yet. If the BOT at FSU mentions the Big12 by name then I would think so.

There is nothing more comical than aggy delusions!! LOLLLLL

    - Aggy left that "two team" conference because they could not compete. It was a complete desperation move to avoid bankruptcy of their athletic department. Now they have set themselves up as an easy win prostitute for the other teams in the SEC. Only an aggy would see that as a great move.
    - That new "two team" conference had 6 teams finish in the AP top 20 in 2011 vs 5 from the SEC and zero from the ACC. Aggy was not one of those teams despite a preseason top 10 ranking and found a way to lose to the second worst UT team in 14 years on their home field.
    - The SEC was top heavy in the polls only because their conference is so middle and bottom light and aggy managed to blow a three touchdown second half lead against Arkansas.
    - Aggy was the ring leader of shenanigans because they insisted on unequal Tier 1 revenue sharing even though they were a third tier program in the conference.
    - Aggy whines about the LHN even though they refused to join it. They just got butt hurt when UT scored big with the LHN after they turned it down and they could not get squat for their third tier rights.
    - Aggy has never played in much less won a BCS bowl game since the 1990s.
    - Everyone in the Big 12 is delighted that aggy took their delusions of grandeur and cult act to the SEC. The Big 12 replaced them with two teams that are much better football programs.

  • I'm still unsure why the SEC would not want to add FSU, Clemson, Miami and Ga Tech - that could solidify it as THE SOUTHEASTERN Conference...

Either way, I'm all about leaving - although I'd like to see the SEC "swoop" in and take the four teams above.
