  • Spetman yesterday: "We're in the ACC. We're committed to the ACC," Spetman said. "That's where our president and the board of trustees has committed to, so we're great partners in the ACC."

    Haggard (Charirman of BOT) today: "On behalf of the Board of Trustees I can say that unanimously we would be in favor of seeing what the Big 12 might have to offer. We have to do what is in Florida State's best interest."

    I think I know what Jim Smith means on how we're structured wrong. Does anyone in the FSU administration ever talk to each other?

    Regardless, kudos to Andy, this needed to be said.

    Whether you like Spetman or hate him, don't judge him on what he said about being committed to the ACC. He has no choice but to say those things. They all said those things. WVU, Missouri ,TAMU... Its just legalities.

    This is VERY interesting, though. I hope someone can provide a link.

  • Indeed front page exclusive interview on ToS. Also said he has received many E-mails since the deal was announced and 95% of them are people that are not happy with the deal.

    Thanks. Just read it. Its also interesting that he said "We will explore our options" - paraphrasing. That means the ACC couldn't sue the Big 12 because FSU initiated contact. I see what you did there Chairman....

  • acc is committed to basketball. it's obvious when you look at how the nc schools are treated plus the addition of cuse and pitt going forward. football generates almost no money in this conference when compared to the other aq conferences minus the big east. we are unc/duke's bitches.

    b12 is committed to football and is second only to the sec over the past 10 years in revenue. i want the sec due to money and being able to continue playing in our region. it just makes the most sense. if i have to choose between being unc/duke's bitch or being texas', then i'll go with the one where i make twice as much money thank you.

  • By the way, as a neutral 3rd party living 2,500 miles away who doesn't have a vested interest either way (although I've always had a lot of respect for both FSU and Texas), I don't know why you guys wouldn't go to the B12.

    Your direct in-state competitor (UF) and biggest regional recruiting threats (Bama, UGA) are making so much money already (soon to be even more once the SEC tv deal is finalized) that you guys have got to keep up or risk losing the long-term facilities and coaching arms race.

    ACC: $17m all 3 tiers

    B12: $28m for tier 1 and 2 if at 14 teams including FSU and Clemson with a CCG.
    $5-7m for tier 3 for a team like FSU.

    $35m is double the money you're making now, and is the kind of $$$ you guys are going to need to compete long-term with your SEC competitors.

    Even if the escalator clauses in the new B12 deal are fictional, at the bare minimum, adding FSU and Clemson would be worth at least $4m/ school over the existing deal based on the ACC's new deal.

    But FSU, Clemson and 2 others (especially if one is Miami) adding $8m/ school to the deal seems very realistic, given the kind of must-see tv matchups you'd have. FSU-Texas, FSU-OU, FSU- OSU, FSU-WVU. Ditto for Clemson and Miami vs those schools.

    Add it up, and on the extremely conservative end of estimates, even if the B12 deal stayed at $20m/ school, the ACC schools would be looking at a $10m/ year difference.

    On the higher end, and in my view, a more realistic range, you're doubling your money from $17M to $34M-$35M/yr.

    And with the B12 offsetting your increased travel cost as part of the deal, there'd be no downside to it.

    And that's not even getting how the new playoff system money is going to be divided up. You guys would be carrying the ACC, which probably won't put a team in a playoff very often unless it's FSU. In a B14, you guys would have someone in every year, as the conference would be viewed on par with the SEC. The difference between getting big playoff money every year vs the smaller amount every year will really add up over the long run,

    I don't see how FSU and the other football schools in the ACC could pass this up. I'll be shocked if you guys don't leave.

  • Great and completely accurate statements by Haggard. The statements from FSU continue to build, 1st the release of the our budget deficit, followed by Spetman's well worded statement on the new deal and followed by BOT members blasting the ACC.
