FSU-WV, coaches' contracts, budget update

  • For those of you that wonder why the Boosters gives to Academics.. remember this...

First, colleges are, and should be about education. Athletics has boomed and it helps bring recognition and sometimes revenue to the school... but it's all about education and bettering and enriching lives.

Secondly, people give to athletics because they're proud of their school. People want to be entertained and it's a lot easier to cheer on the football team than proudly wear your Circus t-shirt. Know where those people come from that give? Academics. That's right, your donors are former students/alumni. Sure, random public and fans give, but nothing like Alumni.

It's pretty simple civilization model - you build an economy, the economy grows and those that leave and become successful on that education give back. The circle of life.

And with that being said, I think academics should actually get MORE.

I won't preach.. but we ALL should be concerned that more and more educational programs are getting CUT and athletics getting that money instead. University of Florida just cut their computer science department off the face of the earth, and gave that budget to Athletics. That's disgusting.

  • Not exactly a logical decision when both athletics and academics are in a deficit. Your choice though. I'm sure I and any other student who benefited from the the gift that the boosters give to academics annually are thankful.

  • If we were in the SEC and sold out every single game, this wouldn't be a problem. Not to mention booster donations would go through the roof.

  • Academics should not get any money donated to Boosters. If academics needs money they need to do a better job of fundraising. So atheltics is short 2+ million this year and Boosters is forced to give 2.6 million to academics. Well there is your shortfall.

People donate to boosters to make the sports teams better, not for some random professor to get a raise. Each part of the university needs to be accountable for itself and not rely on Boosters to foot the bill.

If FSU and Boosters were so short on money, i surely hope we would not move forward with certain projects right now. I have to believe that the people running Boosters, especially, know whats going on financially and feel ok about it.

I think this is some posturing by Spetman to increase donations and shine more light on the state cuts to FSU's overall budget which affects all aspects of the university. Smart people know athletics drives the engine at FSU and if people are mad that athletics are being hurt by state cuts, more will step with donations and political pressure.

I am not trying to derail this thread about what I think about the ridacalous price and spending by universities. I feel very strongly the money I donate to be boosters is for athletics. I have no idea what plan that 2.6 million Dr. Barron is planning to use that money. It could go to a program I do not support. if this continues I will be stopping my contributions on the future. Its not much but it adds up over time.

FSU is far from the only university doing this. I don't get why we need to decrease our budget. Jim Smith publicly said he's willing to write a big check if other FSU alumni and supporters are as well. Just get it done, Spetman, you POS.

The practice field is a done deal. Only question is when it breaks ground, this fall or the following spring.
    Hardly a fiasco.

Actually people donate for various reasons. Your statement is just flat out wrong.
I think your are right about the posturing to encourage people to buy tickets and donate more.

Not the question I am asking...I am asking about the renovation of the practice fields that was just completed and the subsequent sod issues.

"Academics" has done this to themselves largely. USF has(d) 219, or some such ridiculous #, of degree awarding programs w/ a $3 billion per year operating budget. Are you kidding me? No way that is sustainable, and what the hell does any one university do w/ 219 programs? Not to mention it isn't exactly a secret anymore that "academics" is little more than left-wing indoctrination. And people (i.e. the ones who fund these bloated universities) aren't buying it. Hence the donations are drying up. This is a good thing to me.

Take myself: Proud FSU alum, donated (notice the past tense) to the school even though I didn't agree w/ all the leftists that made a living in part to my help, but I did b/c I love FSU. Not anymore. Ever. Why? B/c I got to see that scumbag TK prancing around w/ a "Noles for Obama" button and that hoodlum William Ayers came on campus (this the same terrorist that said 25 million Americans will need liquidating b/c we won't buy into their Marxist model) to speak. Screw them and if they go bankrupt all the better. Then they will get a good dose of what true economics is all about. BTW FSU's Economics dept. (who the Koch brothers support and had John Stossel by recently) is rather conservative, and is doing well. Wonder why?

No, it's time these little islands of indoctrination got their come uppance. Way past time actually.

AHHH.....the tea party folks. And people wonder why, when I tell them my son will never be able to enjoy going to FSU like I did. The state of Florida has been, and it is only getting worse, decreasing support for education at all levels. While FSU still has a few programs that remain highly rated, the university system as a whole, is dropping compared to almost every other university system.

Well all good things come to an end. Governor Graham was the last person to really try to bolster the system with adequate funding.

Good grief. "Academics" is little more than left-wing indoctrination? Donations are drying up because of this?

You have no idea what you're talking about. The financial issues faced by the State system in Florida relate to a lot of factors, and have little to nothing to do with fanatics like yourself pulling donations. The state of Florida has long relied on tourism dollars and new residential growth for state funding. Both have dwindled significantly post crash. Secondly universities took major hits on their endowment during the crash along with everyone else invested in the market. Thirdly, with interest rates being so low, universities (like everyone else) aren't getting as much of a return on their endowments. 6 years ago what were money market funds getting? 5%? Now you are looking at .75%. When you have an endowment of $500 million+ that is quite a bit less for operating funds yearly.

Keep your fanatical rantings off this board. You can always go to the off topic board or congregate with other like minded people.

No offense, but you're not seeing the "big picture" here.

Athletics exists because the school exists. Also understand that generally your donors are your former students.. those run THROUGH the academic part of the school... the ones that become successful and "Give back".

Also - how do you think the Boosters know whom to poach?

Have you EVER donated to a poltical party? I ask because of this - once you become a donor, you get slammed for life by the person you donated to, and your snail mail (that old school post off stuff) just increased 10 fold. Why? Because you're on the list now buddy, your tagged as a giver, and you're going to be hounded. The school's "colleges" work with the Boosters allowing the Boosters access to the "big fish" at various functions and such, where contact is made, and where donations start to happen. At many schools there are now "arrangements" to where the Boosters insert people into the college branches (IE, "college of business", "college of engineering", etc) and those Boosters do all the legwork on fundraising and that particular "college" gets a "%" of the donation to stay within the college.

The "Booster" clubs are independant and are investors, if you didn't know. If you donate 1 million to FSU through seminole boosters, do you think the full 1 million goes to athletics? Not a chance. It gets invested and the athletics gets a small part up front. A very small part. Booster clubs take your money and do with it as they choose, investing it wisely to nurture it. You should do research on it, it will surprise you.

Since the dawn of time, people are proud of their own and want to represent their "name". Nobody would ever go around (except the IVY schools) and tout their education level and get a mass audience. No, people want to see their school "compete" and that's where athletics comes in. Athletics gives a reason to cheer for their respective school and develop that post-grad pride.

Would you wear FSU colors like you do today if there were no Athletics? Of course not. You'd wear it much, much less.

But would you even have those FSU colors on if it weren't for going to FSU in the first place? Likely not, and surely not at that passion level.

FSU is your school and more importantly your roots... so you nurture those roots.

Typical. How about you pay my sub then you may dictate where, when, and what I post about. Until then? Hug a nut. But you're right, FSU, and other universities everywhere, turning their back on the alumni who are out in the real, not theoretical, world has nothing to do w/ their funding drying up. Nope not a thing. What you stated about the market definitely plays a role as well, but it's not the only thing. People are fed up w/ what constitutes an "education" these days and those that proclaim themselves to be educators who couldn't function outside of their leftist fantasy islands w/ their captive audiences.

This is what happens when you (in this case higher education) market a worthless commodity. It's value is greatly diminished due to it's purchasing power. A 4 yr degree in any liberal arts field and most others is largely worthless. Why? B/c there are so many due to this false belief, fostered in large part by the universities so they can make revenue, that everyone is due a college education. What we are now seeing is little more than a market correction. In the long run this is a good thing.

  • This board is about FSU athletics. Nobody wants to hear your rantings. If we did, we would go to a meeting of the Starke Tea Party.

And I could crush everything you said, but don't want to take this thread anymore off topic than you already have....
