FSU Baseball scrambling to fill spots...

  • It's not a disaster at all. It's one of the best classes that I have seen us sign. We had 9 recruits drafted and have 4 enrolling. That is a pretty standard number amoung college baseball (getting half of your drafties that is).

  • I am admittedly ignorant on FSU baseball, so I'll take your word that all of this is normal. TOS seemed like us being a good team next year would be extremely unlikely. So I was skeptical. No reason to think some true FR can't contribute ASAP, like Martin.

  • I've had the privilege to watch a few of our practices, particularly before the regionals and supers. Nogowski has some serious pop. If he can get it together I expect him to be our power guy. Don't forget Gonzo had 10 homers or so. And this was a down year for him as well. As long as Bell is our pitching coach tho, I am extremely confident. He took Leibradt and Compton, who were drafted very late (48th, and IDK if Compton even was drafted), and made them into a very solid #1 and #2

TOS also said we wouldn't be hosting regionals this year, at the end of last year.

Compton went undrafted. Bell's work with Scantling and Benincasa shows how great a job he did.

  • Just want to comment on the drafting vs. no draft part. I don't think we should use that as a judge of talent. Many players will be called in various round during the draft by teams to see if they are interested in playing MLB or going to school, or how much money it would take to have them bypass school. Sometimes, teams will just not even draft a player because their commitment to attending college is just that strong where as, they would have been taken within the top 10-15 rounds.

There are plenty of examples of this, and players being taken WAY below their rating because teams just know they are going to school. Look at Winston, he should have been top 3 rounds easy, but teams know he is going to FSU and since they weren't going to take him in the mid to high 1st there almost became no point. The only reason Texas took him in the 15th was to see if they could sell him on playing Football during the year and for the Rangers during the summers. They didn't even try and talk him out of FSU.

Guys like Skye Bolt, a UNC commit who is so set on school he wasn't drafted until the 26th round, but is another top 2 round pick. Lucky UNC right? Tucker Simpson, a 6-7 pitcher who throws in the mid 90's, wasn't even drafted and is going to UF. Again, lucky us huh?censored

These are just a couple of examples I wanted to point out from this year. Don't sell some of our commits short saying they weren't drafted. Guys like Ryan Valdes could have been drafted, but might have just chosen to tell the teams to skip them.

Check out this list of Perfect Game all-americans and see all the ones who weren't even drafted and see what kind of players they are in their profiles. There are some real studs there. We just happened to be on the wrong end of it this year.

  • The Perfect Game is as corrupt in recruiting as it gets. Players pay hundreds of dollars to go to their "showcases" (hundreds per showcase) and play in their tournaments. Aside from the very cream of the crop, the more "showcases" of theirs you participate in, the higher you're ranked.

  • We are bringing in a lot of talent still, despite the draft. In order to continue to do that, you have to sign the best. Unfortunately, by doing so, you run the risk of losing many of them to the draft. But when you do sign several top talents, some of them will elect to go to school. This is the first class that I have seen us sign that was truely elite. We lost several players because of their ability, but we are also brining in some top talents too. I will reiterate that this is still, despite the losses, the best class that we have signed since I have followed FSU baseball. Hopefully they develop into great players too.

I believe you, but it is also the only real visible entity where we as fans can evaluate these players and see what kind of talent they may be bringing in. If you have other places for us to find that, please do share as I would love to check it out.

There's nothing. You just have to wait until they get on campus.

I seem to recall nearly all of Perfect Game's top prospects being drafted. They must be going something right. Perfect Game dent get kids drafted, their ability does.

It's all about marketing. These parents pay money to have their kids at PG events and showcases and scouts flock to them since they can get a look at many players all in one place. Their may be guys just as talented around the country, but this is easier for teams to scout the players and know they are making a pretty good pick in higher rounds as they see them against higher competition. Prospectwire is a similar site who does these showcase type events. Despite the reputation, I am sure I would do the same as a parent in their position.

  • Dal, great points about not always judging players based on draft status. Buster and Stephen Drew are two that come to mind. EVERYBODY knew they were instant impact players and early round talents, yet were likely to go to college. SD was taken in the 11th and Buster was taken very late.

Also seems like we have as much luck with lesser heralded recruits as the studs sometimes. Jack Rye, Bryan Henry, Gilmartin, and Compton are a few that come to mind. There always seems to be an unknown guy or two come in and over perform and a highly touted guy underperform.

Sometimes we just have to rely on our coaches scouting.

I get that. But, parents aren't paying for a favorable evaluation, they are paying to be seen by scouts. The clubs make their own evaluations that apparently line up pretty closely to Perfect Game's evaluations. Very seldom are talented players underlooked anymore. It just doesn't happen in todays society. The MLB acknowledged this during the draft.

Perfect Game offers a service to be seen ny scouts, whether they are drafted or not comes down tovthier performance, not perfect Game rating. It just happens that perfect Game does a good job in evaluations.

  • I'll say this, if the coaches are looking for infielders, they need to be calling this kid, Tyler Palmer originally out of Odum, Ga. The kid was a power hitting SS, set to go to UGA, and was then drafted in the 4th round by the Marlins. He then holds out through the summer looking for more money and gets injured with a cut to the wrist that needed surgery. He ends up at Oakton Comm Coll in Illinois and tears it up this year, but still wasn't drafted again. Somebody call Meat and get him to Illinois!

They're going to get the top guys right. The no-brainers. After that, it's how many tournaments/showcases of theirs you go to. Part of that is corrupt, and part of it is that there are just too many players, and they don't have any sort of scouting outside of their camps and showcases. If a player who isn't a top 10 round pick doesn't go to any of their stuff, they don't rate that player.
