Expectations for EJ Manuel in 2012

  • No limit IMO IF EJ can learn how to relax. He starts most every game really tight and it is all in his head. A couple of early cupcakes might be exactly what this team needs to just play loose, particularly EJ. If EJ can score early next year we might actually get back to blowing people out and getting the underclassmen lots of PT in the 2nd half.

3,000 yards passing, 500+ yards rushing and 30+ TDs.

First lets start with an O-line that has a very talented core of youth and JUCO's that bring fresh blood a unique array of life experiences that will help define the group as a whole in a very workman like manner and with a spring, summer, and fall mostly together should reveal surprising results. The receiving core is diverse in skill sets, talented and experienced. The TEs with Hicks hopefully, will be again diverse and talented with multiple weapons like O'leary in passing situations and Hicks/Christo blocking with Tye filling in as a possible H-back. Fb sound, wish Lonnie would get more touches and Rbs will be also diverse in skill set (Wilder=Earth, Pender=Wind, Freeman=fire) and a strength. The defense will be of course dominant and will win the tough ones for us mark it. Special terms will be solid in coverage, kicking sound, punting may take a slight dip in production but remember, Beatty early enrolled and will focus on punting so that end should be stable maybe not great but outside of the occasional mishap the unit will be fine.

EJ has taken that awkward step from new starter from last year to the guy and leader so he will produce this year more so because of the depth and talent that will surround him and hopefully health too...
3,123 passing, 367 yards rushing and 28 passing TDs and 5 rushing TDs.

  • There were games where E.J. was everything we hoped he would be and more, and then there were a couple games like the Virginia game, where i would have preferred they actually pull the plug and went with Trickett that he was so bad. There were also times that he completely forgot how to read option, which was one of his best assets earlier in his career, something that is a huge problem. Anyway.....

I expect him to be very good, but i also expect something else from EJ.........an injury. He seems to get some sort of nagging, or even major injury every year, and that could really derail our high hopes for next year. If he can stay healthy, and the OL is improved, i could see him having a really solid, all ACC type year.

  • 104th in rushing, 41 sacks, If these are say halved, he has a damn good year. Kid has been in the system for 5 years, great person, good athlete. Tha being said, he looked average at best most of last year, attributed to injury and poor oline play. I hope he has a good year, would suck to be here this long and go undrafted.

    Ocalanole

  • I expect his timing to better. I expect less mental errors. I hope,he becomes consistent with the short and middle passes because if we waste our receiving corp I will pull my hair out.

  • Where do you guys get this "EJ gets nagging injuries every year..." stuff from. He broke his finger a couple of springs ago and hurt his shoulder in a game damn near everyone else was hurt after. Other than that he's been healthy. I think the line between Ponder and EJ re: injuries is a bit blurred.

For the amount of punishment he took last season due to our OL, I'm shocked he played as much as he did.

This and as long as he can stay healthy, make smart decisions ill b happy

  • we just need the OL to stay healthy and protect him and he'll show the world why he waited his turn.

  • EJ actually plays well when he has time. There are times during big games when he forgets about the fundamentals and when he does, he overthrows, doesn't set his feet, etc. He has eventually settled down and made plays like the second half of the Notre Dame game throughout the year. I also notice that in the second half of the ND game, the line played extremely well. So I expect great things this year as long as he has the protection and settles down sooner than he did last year during our games.

  • EJ to me has been as underwhelming as Ponder was overwhelming. He is not accurate in the pocket, and locks on to one receiver far to often. I look forward to seeing him progress however I have yet to see any type of improvement.

His best game as a QB was the loss to VT two years ago in the ACCCG. Every game I look at the stat sheets and I cannot believe that he completes 60% of his passes. It is by far the ugliest 60% I have ever seen. So ugly in fact that I staunchly disbelieve it every time I see it.

Now I am not saying that there is no way he will improve. However, I have yet to see reasons for great expectations.

With that said he should, with our support cast, have no problem winning the ACC. To do anything further, there will have to better play calling and OL play.

FWIW, I've heard that Jimbo is planning on expanding the playbook in 2012 (e.g., more spread, etc.) given the players he has now, e.g., Karlos, Darby, Bracy, et. al.

Except Darby was recruited as a corner and no one has any idea if Karlos will actually play offense or not.

  • I just want him to improve upon last year. His pocket awareness was pretty god awful at times (33 sacks?). His accuracy, despite a good completion percentage, was way off at times. His pre-snap reads and subsequent audibles leave a lot to be desired (he looked absolutely lost all game against UVA).

I do not think he's an elite QB. At least he hasn't demonstrated he can be thus far. Hopefully Thompson is healthy and cleared to play. Hopefully our young OL are ready to play. Hopefully our new juco guys are capable of, at the very least, pushing our starters and providing quality depth if we sustain an injury on the OL. With a healthy OL (even if it's a little inexperienced) and a couple experienced RBs I think Manuel will have a much better season than last year and I think the team will, too.

  • To address EJs injuries remember that he probably wouldn't have been injured as much if our O- Line protected him. His injury in the OU game set the tone and had the O-line had his back, we may have won that game and he wouldn't have missed the rest of the games. Thus putting us in the ACCCG. And who knows where from there. If our o- line holds up, we' ll be in contention.

  • Most of the criticism leveled at EJ rests on the OL.

It is alot easier to throw a football with 4 seconds to decide versus 2 seconds. You have time to read progressions, set your feet, step into the throw, etc.

That "spin move" thing he does happens when a defensive player comes at him at full speed unblocked. IF the OL learns how to stop a 5th rusher, or a stunting DL this season, he will perform much much better.

In the Virginia game EJ just had a bad day passing, and there was no running game to bail him out, also he had a great deep pass to C. Green taken away by yet another phantom holding call on Sanders.

With Fisher being limited as an OC due to other responsibilities, EJ needs to take his game to another level in terms of identifying defenses and getting the offense into the correct play.

If he improves on that there is no reason FSU isn't playing in the ACC Championship game.

Lol talk about a rumor built off rumors lol.

We already run ALOT of spread concepts. Did you watch the ND game lol.

I heard with the 3 rbs we are bringing in next year, Jimbo is looking at moving to a option run offense, since the likely starter Coker ran a wing option offense in high-school. I saw Jimbo playing golf in Atlanta about a month ago, and I am pretty sure he was setting up a visit with Paul Johnson later that day for some option tips!

He had more than enough time to avoid the pressure and/or get rid of the ball on many occasions but took the sack instead.

    tricknole

  • I think he'll have an excellent season but.....He has got to learn line of scrimmage checks based on defensive alignment. It's what made Ponder elite and what killed us on multiple occasions last year.

  • Depends on these factors....

    1. Injuries to the OL

    2. Injuries to EJ

    3. EJ's decision making

Baring the unforeseen such as injuries, the thing that seemed to concern me with EJ was his decision making, but that is just my opinion.

    DaddyO

  • I bet all of them had better OL then what EJ will have too.

    Just saying.

Then your definition of "enough time" is erroneous.

No kidding .... also his view from the couch makes it easier to see how best to avoid a rush.

  • It all depends on whether he is able to make it through spring practice. If he does, I think he will have an outstanding year. I think he has the arm and the tools. He just needs to put it all together.
