Expectations for EJ Manuel in 2012

  • Interested in seeing what everyone's expectations are for EJ Manuel going into his final season in Florida State. He's been here five years now, and will be going into his second year as the starter in an offensive system that has a lot of expectations and demands...

I've been looking at all of coach Fisher's quarterbacks dating back to his LSU days, and noticed a trend among them (including Ponder too..). They all had so-so seasons, pretty decent, nothing that would get them nominated for any post-season lists. But in their final season in the program, or as the starter, they tend to explode and ball out.

Ponder exploded his Junior year, not his Senior year.

Everything depends on the O-Line. People tend to forget how great our offense was in 2009. Ponder was putting up Heisman numbers before he got injured. I remember the Georgia Tech game, where we only punted the ball twice and still lost.

In 2010, Ponder was injured the whole year. In 2011, EJ was injured the whole year and the OL was injured/young. Jimbo is a good OC, just has caught some unlucky injuries.

  • How were their OLs? Not to sound like a broken record, but..

EJ can get us THERE if he's given a chance to work. If the OL is good ... I look for him to make that Ward Jr-Sr season jump and be mentioned for the Heisman.

  • If our oline doesn't suck and can protect him, I expect EJ to have a very good year.

I think if EJ doesn't get injured and our oline is improved to the point where they are at least average, I expect he will have his best season yet. He is going to have tons of talent around him, and he won't exactly be going up against a cast of great defenses.

  • Considering that he was Jimbo's highest rated QB out of high school (IIRC), he's in his 5th year, he's going to have a good (not great) OL and a full cupboard of experienced WRs, I expect a whole lot out of him. He needs to stay healthy though--when he's healthy he's as good as any FSU QB since Ward, IMO.

  • I expect him to live up to his hype . I also think our oline will have a much better year.

  • crucify me, but I expect EJ to be at the Heisman ceremony. Find me a smarter, more gifted FSU quarterback. If the o line plays well and he makes the correct reads the sky is the limit for him. He is everything you want in a quarterback.

  • Sky's the limit. He has a crazy amount of weapons and now he has the experience. If the OL improves I expect his play to improve concurrently.

But he doesn't have to be great. He just has to be careful with the ball. We'd all love an offense that can hang 50 points on anyone. But an efficient attack that minimizes turnovers is good enough to beat everyone on the schedule.

  • Depends what our offensive style is. I will say with Jimbo calling plays EJ probably won't have the senior season that he's capable of having.

  • 3,000 yards passing, 500+ yards rushing and 30+ TDs.

I agree with this. No one early on the schedule will expose our OL at all and as we get into the mid-season you'll have a couple of guys like Watson coming on and the OL will be "solid to good"

Our offensive weapons are off the charts. That said, Jimbo will limit him with weak play calls when some more cut throat coaches would look to press the gas.

I feel the same way. Let him play in a spread/zone read type of offense (Similar to what Cam and Young ran) and I think he would have an All-conference season.

  • Wont make it through the season. Lot of injuries with this dude

  • If he's not All-ACC I'd be disappointed.

FWIW, I've heard that Jimbo is planning on expanding the playbook in 2012 (e.g., more spread, etc.) given the players he has now, e.g., Karlos, Darby, Bracy, et. al.

Your stat sheet is a different opinion.

    3000 passing, 500 rushing and 30+ tds.

Not saying he isn't capable, I'm just not getting my hopes up right now. We have elite athletes and hopefully the offense will be adjusted to accommodate them.

Those are my expectations based on ability, not what I actually think he will accomplish.

Having said that, he did have 2,700 yards passing, 150 yards rushing and 22 TDs last season while missing time to injury and playing behind a poor offensive line. My stats aren't too far out of line.

I think we need to dumb it down, not expand it. I hope we do go with more spread/zone stuff.

  • My expectation for E.J. is a National Championship and Heisman contention. We all know he is capable and has the intangibles. For him to get there starts at the O-Line. The O-line needs to give E.J. more time and also open holes for the running game to keep the defense honest. Notre Dame could have dominated us had they kept blitzing. Lastly, E.J. needs to be a more decisive thrower and get rid of the ball in time. If the O-Line stays intact and the running game is effective, E.J. will bring us the BCS and will be in the Heisman race. Go 'Noles.

  • Every qb at FSU and with Jimbo has had big leaps between their rsjr and rssr seasons. Ponder was the exception but there were mitigating circumstances. No reason to think EJ won't see a similar significant jump. If he stays healthy he should be the best in acc and top 5-10 in the country.

O-line is the only question mark. It only has to be good because of EJs scrambling ability

  • I honestly wont know until about 3 or 4 games in. If he gets confidence early he could be dangerous an excel. If he struggles to get into rhythm early in the year I expect that trend to continue with flashes of greatness but nothing great overall.

    dubnole

  • 20-25 TDs
    5-10 Ints

kind of hard to predict with our OL situation though

EJ is not elite and he will not be in contention for the heisman, but he is good enough to win us the ACC... just got to protect him

    swizz

  • I disagree swizz. EJ is an elite qb. He's finds ways to win and that's a trait that isn't taught, its a gift. Please quantify for us how EJ isn't elite. Gator Bowl, Chic-fl-A Bowl, Champs bowl? He's a natural winner and our offense(o-line namely) needs to show him they'll protect him and he' ll do what he does best, win.
