Expansion Chatter (FSU, VT, SEC)

  • - theres some chatter about VT and the SEC talking behind closed doors.

    - Surprisingly, I've heard from someone I trust would know, the SEC is working with each member about being open minded in regards to potential new members. IE, working against blocking FSU/Clemson from joining. They want their options open when the next round of expansion happens. They also seem to be less concerned with the "footprint" this round and more concerned with locking down their biggest markets and improving the product on the field (more top ranked teams = higher ratings = more money).

Again, just worthless chatter, nothing substantial.

  • No that I think we're going to the SEC, but I keep hearing people say that the SEC already has the Florida market. While that's true, why would the SEC allow another power conference (Big 12) to get a foot in the market well? You would think that they would want you control it. However, I don't see the SEC making a push until someone else does first; they've no reason to.

  • I believe it.

I have heard that VT & FSU were in cohorts to go to the SEC as a package deal. This came up after the Big 12 flirtation came and went.

Gossip I heard is Barron isn't open to the Big 12 but is to the SEC.

Hasn't the Virginia legislature tied Virginia and Virginia Tech together -- so they are a package deal?

I don't see the SEC jumping on board with that... There isn't a long history of success with either school... And VT is unlikely to remain successful over the long haul IMHO. Clemson/FSU would be the power play here.

The question is competition vs. overlapping market share. Will the increased competition generate enough revenue to offset the overlapping which happens in shared markets?

The answer -- is if Clemson and FSU remain highly competitive, then go for it.... I think both teams have fanbases that will never allow their program to slip too far... we simply aren't going to tolerate a coach like Beamer/Zook like performance,.. We'd chase them off too quickly.

You sign Clemson & FSU, before the Big 12 does. Because once the Big 12 swallows teams, I don't see those teams leaving. Their "death penalty" is too brutal and it's a lot more iron clad, because all members agree to it... and you have to agree to it, before you join.

  • VT isn't as tied to UVA as some think. Plus no one is saying UVA cannot go to the B1G because of VT. NC State is tied to UNC way more than VT/UVA.

The SEC getting VT and FSU is a win win. A new TV market and a team with National appeal.

If we were going to the Big12, we would have gone already. It is SEC or bust.

That is what i have been hearing also. FSU and V-Tech would be better option.

  • Mr.SEC talks about SEC options from the ACC...

imo I don't see both Clemson and FSU getting invites...one or the other and one of VT,Va, Nc or Ncstate. Unless Duke jumps ship and the SEC would take UNC and Duke over all others not named Texas.

I think the choice would be pretty easy between these two, nothing against Clemson. But money-wise, FSU has the bigger national following and is in a much, much more populous state, so doubling up wouldn't "hurt" much, and I still think it could actually be beneficial for the SEC to do so in Florida (increasing subscription fees within the state higher than with UF only).

But I'm not holding my breath.

    tricknole

  • I never understood the SEc has Florida locked down Because uf is there. FSU fans are not watching uf or SEC games so if you want all those eyeballs turning on the TV you need FSU in the conference. You don't own a whole state just by having 1 team when there is another huge fan base in that state. FSU is proven to draw ratings.

I've seen people say (so it may not be worth anything) that the state simply wanted VT to not be left behind in a crumbling Big East. So if VT could go to the SEC and UVA to the Big Ten, I don't know if it'd be a big deal. They could both still play in all sports OOC.

  • Hi guys.. New to 247.... Im in Ky so for obv reasons would love to see FSU in the SEC but I don't think it benefits FSU. Take care of biz at Ncst and the Noles are top 3 at worst. The only benefit I se is more national attn, just my opinion.

  • This came from Mr. Blonde on th tBB pretty good summary of why the Slive wants new markets:

"This isn't about quality. Never has been. Its about markets.

If the SEC doesn't have a team in the market, they can only charge about $0.10 per subscriber for the SEC network. North Carolina has 3.4 million cable and satellite homes. Virginia has 2.8 million cable and satellite homes.

If the SEC Network were implemented today, that would be $620,000 per month, 7.4 million per year for these two markets.

If the SEC adds NC State and Virginia Tech, the carriage fees jump to $1 per subscriber. That would be $6.2 million per month, or 74.4 MILLION annually. That's just for these 2 markets.

The SEC already has SC, GA, FL, and KY (can charge the $1) Adding teams from these areas doesn't add to the pie. It would actually give Alabama a smaller check at the end of the year."

  • And if FSU were in the SEC an SECN could charge more in Florida because BOTH programs are on the Network. I don't think anyone can truly argue against that but clearly you SEC fans have been and will continue to do so.

Doubt that would ever happen. Those schools run this conference.

SECN would still show FSU games..not like they could charge more.. Al has 2 programs and it still would be $1.. lol Not how it works...Pac 12 doesn't charge more just bc a state has x-amount of teams.

  • I'm not the most in tune person to how all this works, but what's stopping FSU from just applying for membership to the SEC and making them vote and say yes or no? Is it we don;t want to put ourselves in the position of having been denied or what? Just seems like an easier way to see were we stand.
Like I said I probably dont know enough, but I would like to see FSU in a different conference.

What FSU games will the SECN have rights to show? None, outside of potentially games vs an SEC team.

or better yet how about we apply for membership to the SEC ,BIG10 ,BIG12 ,and PAC12 just to see what happens....yea i know some of these conferences are a reach but lets take a proactive approach and see what happens

How is Alabama a good comparison? The population is small and they're grandfathered in during this expansion game. If demand is higher the price goes up. And if FSU were included, the demand for the network would skyrocket and the SEC could then demand a higher fee in Florida and obviously increase revenue.

    tricknole

  • And just because the SEc has a school in the state doesn't mean a lot of people will want the SECn or watch. Nc is a UNC state, so you basically add just wolf pack fans with any interest in the SECn and even in Va unless you or your kid went to Vt most could care less about VT.

If its a subscription network, more Noles would buy it than VT and NC State combined.

  • Would love to see Alabama or Auburn fans show up at Chapel Hill (or vice versa) for a game. The culture clash would be epoch.

If the SEC (like the recent B1G expansion) continues to add bottom feeders, they won't the best #1 conference anymore.
