EJ makinging checks at line of scrimmage

  • EJ must get better at checks at the line of scrimmage. In his last interview he mentioned that he didn't want to or have to check out of plays because Jimbo does a great job of preparing for the upcoming game. I seen a lot of times where Jimbo would be yelling at him when he goes to the sidelines. Not sure why he is yelling but he sure yells at him a lot. EJ must man up and get us into better plays when they present itself to him. He can't be afraid to change plays because Jimbo called it. Maybe he has a hard time reading defenses, not sure, but he definetly needs to man up and put us in the right plays for FSU to be successful this year

  • Good post.

  • I'd like to know how much latitude he is given before I jump on the "man up" wagon. If he's told not to check off, he's told not to check off.

    Leighty

  • I love some one sayin "man up" to a QB. Most of you would crap your pants having to stand in the pocket against a D-1 defense. As far as checking to the right play, that comes with experience and everyone isn't going to be Ponder. Will he get better? I suspect so. He'll have a coach more focused on the practice field and less on off field issues. He'll also have a year of experience.

  • I want to buy this so badly...I really do. Then I remember EJ is in his 54th year in the program, and if he hasn't "gotten it" by now, when will he?

I have considered the fact that since the QBs learn together, that EJ has gotten much of the same instruction that Ponder did. Obviously his ability to absorb & apply is not on par with CP7 (not many are). This probably causes Jimbo.fits, because he knows EJ knows what to do, but for some reason or another cannot.

This situation, IMO has any number of variables, making it damn near impossible to speculate on...it could be ain.incredibly complex situation, or it could be that EJ isn't capable of picking it up, or anything in between.

The OP is correct tho. Coach Fisher does like to rip him.a new one

  • Theres probably some truth in your theory. In order for him to "man up" he needs to be confident that he doesnt have to run for his life after snapping the ball. There were plays that i saw him more or less looking at his o-line like "where am i getting drilled now". If the line holds, his confidence will increase. With increased confidence, he'll make big plays. I truly believe this is our year to shine. Just my honest opinion and not attempting to stir the pot.

  • There seem to be a couple of theories at work here:

EJ doesn't want to change plays at the line because of his respect for Jimbo.
EJ hasn't fully grasped the playbook and is uncomfortable making changes at the line.
He is more concerned about whether or not his OL will be able to block.

I think the truth is somewhere in the middle. EJ has missed two springs since he has been at Florida State. I believe that like Ponder, he spends a lot of time in the film room. However, the implementation of the offense and the repetition of plays occurs in the spring. I don't think there is a question of whether or not EJ knows the offense, I just don't think he has mastered it yet. I think if he can get to the point where he feels like he has mastered the offense, he will audible more.

To add to that last point, we were just throwing bodies into the OL lineup at times last season. With such a huge turnover from the previous year, he may have been concerned with just making sure they got the first play right, nevermind changing it at the line.

    Blaxican

  • I'll go with that Blax. I think together we are all seeing segments of "what has been & could be". Now we wait to see "what WILL be". This season WILL set the mark for defining EJ's legend. Will it be elite? Will it be a heisman? Or??? I think we have the pieces to put together a good run and support him. Now we wait and see. Go 'Noles!

  • I agree with blax as well. I will add that I think our OL will be improved and EJ and these receivers are going to put on a show this season.

UF sucks and wont score double digits against us so we wont even have to run an offense

    954nole

  • Sorry gator BUT an elite defense doesn't go 6-6 and let Furman put 32 on the scoreboard or let Bama/LSU put 79 on you. Just stating the facts. Later Gator.

UF's defense definitely won't be elite.

  • I made this statement during the season when it was apparent that EJ was not checking out of plays;

"I thought that Ponder was a bit of a reach as a first rounder. However, if he was the one that always seemed to put us in the right play with his calls, then maybe he was better than the fans will ever know."

  • i cant to see what improvement he makes with a more mature line. I have never saw a team start so many freshman in a big bowl game. Our line the enetire year did not play a good game competition should change that this year

  • I really want to see more check downs to the RBs.....I can't tell you how many times he avoided a hard rush and forced throws...especially on 3rd down and short and within the 20 yd line and the RBS WERE SOOOOOOOOOwide open...pender, Pryor, and d free can be $ this year!
