EJ in FOX Sports Mock Draft

  • Understood.

Great for the program but would be possibly the worst draft pick I can remember (if he went that high)

What a crock. EJ has character and would do well. As far as your hyperbole, Ryan Leaf would like a visit in jail.

Absurd...I'm not even going to check that ranking...I think everyone here would love to seem all the Noles taken in the 1st round but we aren't that naïve to believe that they are worthy; No way is EJ's past performance a 1st round worthy, let alone top 10

Just like college coaches select HS athletes on potential, so do some NFL teams.

How do you separate the two? To discredit the ranking requires an assessment of his play.

    His play over 4 years.

  • So their mock draft is as bad as their news channel? I like EJ but would be shocked if he is drafted that high. Liek another poster said you could likely get him 7th in the 2nd or even maybe 3rd round and would come a lot cheaper.

Yes picks like Ryan Leaf and Jamarcus Russell were terrible. I'm referring to so called reaches. Both Leaf and Russell were expected to go in the first 3 picks whether right or wrong. EJ has done nothing to warrant a top 10 pick or 1st round for that matter and it would be an extreme reach. It could turn out to be great pick but I'm strictly referring to draft reaches based on college performance

  • Colin Kaepernick's success may help EJ. They have similar measurables with EJ being a bit heavier. He may benefit from the NFL flavor of the moment syndrome.

Agreed his size and speed with get him in the top two rounds - bank it.

EJ has nowhere near the speed or quickness as Kaepernick or RGIII or Vick. He is a pocket passer that has some running ability. He's more similar to Tannehill or Andrew Luck or Josh Freeman than he is to the other guys

    docholiday11

  • RGII and Vick, no. But why compare him to two of the fastest QBs in NFL history? EJ's 40 time is around the same exact time as that of Kaepernick, though. Luck (4.6) and Tannehill (4.65) are both a step slower, and Freeman (4.9) is much slower.

Quickness is a different story, but how are you measuring? He looks like a great runner when (1) plays are designed for him to run and/or (2) he decides he wants to run.

I'm not saying he deserves a #7 pick, but ya'll need to think about this objectively and not based on what you wish he had done for FSU.

  • btw, not all 40 times are the same out there (obviously), but EJ has been clocked in the 4.54 range.

  • Unless EJ goes through a monumental improvement, I can't see him being anything other than a back up in the NFL. That small hesitation he has in his decision making and throws will be an eternity in the NFL. He's never been able to thread the needle the way you have to in the NFL.

  • that would be bad for cards fans and larry fitz boos would be loud lol

Who cares what your 40 time is when you don't want to run the football because you're afraid of getting hurt?

    napoleon

  • He's basically a 75% Colin Kapernick. He is a little shorter, a little slower, doesn't have the rocket arm, isn't as decisive with the ball-running or throwing, lacks the pocket presence of the 49er QB, etc...

That still may get him over drafted, but I think the highest he goes is the second round and more likely in the 3rd or 4rth.

  • About 12 teams NEED a QB and a few more would like to add someone to see if it is an upgrade (Bucs and Jets, for example). The Niners took Kaepernick because they weren't very comfortable with Smith, but not so uncomfortable to take a QB in the first round. A team like that could easily take EJ in the top of the second, especially when you consider that most teams who pick twice in the first 40 picks usually suck, which is usually because they don't have a QB.

Then there are the really strange picks, like the Pats taking Mallett in the 3rd round. I bet EJ's name gets called some time on Friday night.

  • While I personally do not see EJ as a top 10 pick or 1st rounder, we should remember that there are 32 teams doing mock drafts right now and all it takes is one GM to agree with this Fox Sports guy to push EJ that high. And if a couple or few teams start to really fall for EJ, then even if they don't rate him so highly, all it takes is for them to develop a "we can't lose this guy" mentality before he starts soaring up draft boards in a sort of bidding war over who will spend the highest pick to land him. I, for one, am rooting for this to happen and hope EJ gets drafted very highly, regardless of where I would slot him in my own mock draft.

Because at the time Ryan Leaf's personality issues were over looked. EJ is a class guy, high character, has the measurables, and someone will take him based on potential. What you or I think are irrelevant.

Maybe he was only afraid to run before getting paid.
