EJ Manuel getting all kinds of attention

  • Colin Cowherd said from one of his most trusted sources "EJ is going to be one of the biggest surprise draft picks in the whole draft." Said he will be another Christian Ponder surprise. He also went on to say NFL teams LOVE him!

    But as an FSU fan, you get such a crystal clear compare/contrast between a healthy Ponder and EJ... it's hard to believe that there are teams in the NFL which are this stupid.

    Ponder is much better, and I seriously doubt the Vikings would take him again, if they could have a do-over.

  • I don't think we ever got to see a Ej's true potential. His 1st full year as a starter his OL was downright terrible. He developed some bad habits. and habits are hard to break. He was much better this year, but still made some bad mistakes that he shouldn't have. EJ has all the tools to be a starting QB for a long time in the NFL. I don't get the Ponder is much better crowd. Ponder had his blunders at FSU as well. He just wasnt as highly touted as EJ so his was excused, a lot of the time.

    Couple that with the confidence / ego that every NFL coach has that makes them believe that once they get their hands on him and coach him up, they can fix any of his shortcomings.

    If he can find a coach who can calmly talk to him and help him read defense he should be good. but that's a lot to coach for a first round pick, reading a defense seems like a thing that you have or don't have. Could be wrong on that. Def hope EJ makes it bc he's a great person and of course a Nole.

    Before Ponder got injured vs. Clemson... his 10+ yard accuracy was significantly better than EJ. If you compiled a video of every passing play EJ threw, which was 10+ yards down field (in air), his accuracy is a joke. Sure he threw plenty of ducks, which went for 50 yards... but the NFL is about putting the ball in a narrow window. Out of every 10+ he threw, he made an NFL quality throw less than 5 times in is entire career here

    Can't see him in the first.. his stock on the rise has to mean hes gotten himself into second/third round

    Disagree, he will go in the first. Too many teams want him and one will jump the gun, perhaps a trade up to get him.

    Not sure if this was a jab at Jimbo or not. If he can't handle someone yelling at him, then sports might not be the career choice. Calm talk is for off season and drills. In game yelling will happen all day everyday

    There's potential for adjustment on both sides.

    All things considered you'd rather have a quarterback who can thrive under a coach whether he yells after bad plays or not.

    And all things considered you'd rather have a coach who yells at players who thrive under yelling and speaks calmly to players who thrive better with calm talking.

    But if you're dealing with a QB and a coach who aren't flexible in this way, you'll have to make a good match between the two or else success is not in the offing.

    I completely disagree. Depending on who drafts EJ, if he goes to a team willing to groom him and he doesn't have to start from Day 1 then drafting him in the first round isn't all that bad. However if they draft him in the first and expect him to have a RGIII or Andrew Luck type of effect on a team then "no" it's not worth and he should be drafted much later. I think the Vikings had the same plan for Ponder but the QBs on the roster at the time were terrible and forced Ponder into the lineup before he was ready in my opinion. And besides AP what weapons does Ponder have around him to be successful? Only a few elite QBs have the ability to make average skill talent look great so you can't truly fault Ponder for not being more successful than he's already been.

    I agree with this. I think someone is going to trade into that 27-32 range and pick him to make sure they get him.

    True my main point is in the heat of the game 80,000 + fans it hard to calmly talk to a player. We had some posters who were very critical of Jimbo about his yelling. It happens, and will always happen. Was not trying to knock EJ either. Love him, and can't wait for him to tear it up in the league

  • He met with 20+ teams at the combine and who knows how many since. We may get surprised, should be happy for the kid.

    I agree. I remember being frustrated (I'd say equally but I can't remember whether that's true or not) by Ponder. It seemed like he was either unable or unwilling to throw down the field and he was injured quite a bit. Maybe one had to do with the other but Ponder was by no means clearly better from my perspective.

    Either way I could very easily see EJ being a better pro. Not that he will only that it wouldn't shock me.

    No jab at Jimbo. Huge fan of him. Just from my sources, EJ can't handle the yelling.

    Yes, I was one of those posters who thought jimbo's yelling was unhelpful.

    You're right of course that not yelling while in the pressure cooker is hard, but some coaches do stay calm in that situation. Richt did, albeit from the press box, when talking to his QBs. Don't know how calm Richt stays as head coach.

    And lost in this is that fans talk as though Jimbo's yelling ruined EJ, but that's only if by "ruined" you mean winning the conference, several bowl games, and becoming an early round draft pick. EJ was clearly able to perform fine while getting yelled at--but perhaps he'd have been slightly better (or worse) without it.
