Distance Between Tally and Big 12 vs Tally and ACC (#'s inside)

  • Decided to do some quick research to find out the distance between Tally and Big 12 Schools vs. Tally and ACC Schools. Used Google Maps, so the distance is via car and not as the crow flies. Still should give a rough estimate of the distance between the schools. As you can see the difference is not major. Particularly if we will be in the Big 12 South.

    Big12

    Austin-870
    Waco-866
    Ames-1,177
    Lawrence-1,013
    Manhattan, KS-1,104
    Norman-1,068
    Stillwater-1,004
    Lubbock-1,227
    Morgantown-834
    Fort Worth 916
    Clemson 359*

    Average with Clemson: 948
    Average without Clemson: 1,007

    ACC
    Boston-1,310
    Durham-602
    Atlanta-268
    College Park-861
    Chapel Hill-599
    Raleigh-592
    Charlottesville-730
    Blacksburg-631
    Winston Salem-541
    Pittsburgh-906

  • So a significant difference but not bsu in the big east difference. Plus the big 12 could still add another 2 teams (in addition to clemson) in the southeast and further negate the difference especially if those 2 are from a pool of Gatech, Miami, Vatech, or Louisville.

The big 12 could also opt to help us out with the travel whether by scheduling appropriately and/or through extra monies to offset the difference.

  • I think the distance argument is blown out of porportion and really isnt accurate. For the most part, do we take busses to most of our games as it is. For the most part, we do not. What is the actual difference then between a flight to North Carolina and a flight to Austin? Not much difference. Also, our band only goes on 1 roadtrip a season for the most part as it is. The distance argument is baseless.

Yes there is a provision within the Big 12 to compensate universities for extra travel costs. FSU and Clemson will be made whole before conference dollars are divided.

  • You will not make all those trips in one year

In a 14 team conference with Clemson, Miami and GT or Lousiville coming along the MAX trips to the Midwest are 3 and in most years only 2.

As it stands we will have BC, MD and Cuse in our division which means that we will be doing 1 to 2 long trips a year ALREADY. In short the travel cost issue is way overblown

Plus you combine travel to places as needed for teams as the PAC12 does. You would make a trip and play a combination Kansas and Kansas State, or Texas and Baylor or Oklahoma and Oklahoma State. The PAC12 does trips where the team plays Arizona and Arizona State. Mens's and womens basketball play the same teams during the same period. Combinations like that.

Great points, on all fronts. Also consider that an extra 220 miles (difference in average distances) is really only what - less than one extra hour per flight than it currently is? Not that big of a deal.

This is correct. Travel costs are equalized. The Big 12 is the only conference that does this.
