Discussion: Middle Linebacker

  • Thought I'd spark up a bit of discussion with a few questions.

-Who do you think our starter at middle linebacker will be by week 1?
-Will Vince Williams remain the favorite, or will Jeff Luc come in after missing spring practice and challenge for the spot?
-How do you see our depth chart playing out at the position?

Personally, I'd love to see Luc play. I know he was injured for a while, but I think the guy has immense talent, I'd love to see him out there. Not knocking Williams by any means, he's a solid player, I'm just a fan of Luc's.

  • I'm going with Williams... I am a big fan of Luc as well but I haven't had a chance to see the fire in Luc just yet... I want to see his nasty streak before I am sold on him. He is huge; he should be bullying the competition. Maybe he is? I just haven't seen or heard what I was expecting from him as a recruit as compared to the others from 2010.

  • I feel the same way I would love Luc to start at MLB position. We also might see Bradham move inside at times this year.

  • This is a major, major thing to watch through fall camp.

I think a lot of Luc's relative obscurity has to do with a few things. First of all, he had to play behind Kendall Smith last season, a two-year starter. Secondly, he was battling injury for the better part of the season. I think that at worst, he'll be backing up Williams this season, no way he's falling out of the two-deep. At best, he comes into fall practice with a fire in his eyes and competes for the starting spot, reminding us all why he was a consensus 5* recruit in 2010.

  • I believe Vince will start in week one with Luc as the #2. It wouldn't surprise me at all if Luc takes the starting spot at some point during the season.

  • I really wish we could just get a Ray Lewis type up in here. A MLB that makes tight ends and slot receivers just shake in their boots when they go over the middle.

Maybe someone will emerge like this? Only time will tell, I suppose.

  • I think it is Vince Williams for the opener. Only because Jeff Luc missed all of the spring and has battled injuries. He may be behind just a little ... but not much.

I remember watching Jeff Luc in the 2010 spring game and thinking that he would be outstanding at FSU. (Yeah, it was just a spring game, but I tried to focus my eyes on him when he was in there and I was impressed.)

Great thing about linebacker is that there's so much rotating in and out to keep everybody fresh. Both should get a good amount of playing time.

Definitely a fair stance, I could see it happening.

Who do we have behind Vince and Jeff?

  • Don't everybody forget Telvin is working some at that position. IMO Vince and Luc rotate and Telvin spells them. Bradham starts and is backed up by Telvin and Jones starts and his back up will be established in the next few weeks, more than likely Nigel T.

    Sounds about right.

  • I would love to see Bradham in the middle with Jones and Telvin Smith on the outside. I think that gets our best LB talent on the field together at the same time and IMO Bradham is a MLB in the NFL so that would help his development there for the future. Either that or a OLB in a 34.

Not completely sold on Vince or Luc right now, but that's because we haven't seen much of them to this point. Depth chart after those first three is difficult to project. I really think Jenkins or Terrance Smith could end up in the 2 deep by years end, to me both are superior to Nigel Terrell who may be a lifetime special teamer.

Terrell is stupid fast and as he continues to add strength and size I think he has a shot to play. He really runs like a running back. Having said that Jenkins or Smith look good early so that will be fun to watch play out. I have heard new rumblings about Moody moving to LB and that makes sense with LJ and Los coming on strong. One of the safetys is moving to LB and Moody would be my guess followed by Brooks. As far as Vince, he is putting in the work and I believe it will pay off. The coaches loved his spring and see that the D follows him. He will be fine. I am waiting to see Jeff and what he brings. Whenever he is on the field we have possibly the most strength in the middle we have ever had. Home boy is a monster. He is more intimidating than the boys that stand a half a foot taller than him. Hulkish.

I actually hope that Telvin will be starting at MLB against spread/faster teams (e.g., Clemson, OU) as will Joyner at FS. Both Telvin and Joyner can cover a lot of ground quickly... and tackle/hit.

Really don't like Moody moving to LB, with him not there we really don't have any experience at the S position. Yes he does add some depth at the LB position but he wouldn't start over Jones or Bradham.

  • I think Vince will be the starter, but the flow of the game will dictate who plays the most snaps. Pro Style / Running Team = Vince. Passing/Spread Team = Telvin

  • Vince and Luc will battle it out this Summer.

Going to be a clash of the titans there, whoever comes out as the starter will no doubt have earned it.

  • How much did Coach Hudson rotate his LB's last year? Just a feel and I may be wrong but I thought it was 80/20 when the game was on (not counting garbage time and gimme games). It sure seemed like the starting 3 were out there a vast majority of the time. Will that change this year?

I have a soft spot for Vince. Local Polk County boy in a superstar family. Good leader from day one. Easy to root for.

  • Not saying who is better, but I'll tell you after watching all of last years games for the fourth time, VW was always around the ball. Like everyone else, he missed a few assignments (I guess), and missed a tackle or two, but his hustle impressed me to no end. Kid just loves to play and hit. I imagine Coach Egghead has been working hard with him to tweak his skill set. We'll be fine whoever is in there. With 2-3 very strong players at the position, we can load fresh legs and bodies into the opposing teams backfield and lynchmob.

  • Like Fish said, if we could have Bradham, Smith and Jones on the field at the same time, that is our most talented group. I think Vince will start the season, but if Luc plays up to potential, there's no way to keep him off the field. Hopefully his injuries are behind him and we can start seeing the guy we thought we'd get when he signed here. Can't go wrong with Vince though, at least when he's out there, you know you are going to get full effort every play.

He said last spring that it's "Luke." It's funny, he said his momma would be upset if anyone called him "Luck."
