Did the ACC get ripped off with new contract?

Did ACC Teams Get Ripped Off With New ESPN TV Contract? - Forbes

The ACC has signed a new multi-billion dollar TV deal with ESPN, but could it have gotten more? Maybe.

  • Considering it's a basketball conference, I think they did quite well. Don't think it will matter for us before too long.

  • ACC? No.

FSU? Got bitch slapped and then told it would like it.

Spetman and Barron have been only too happy to bow down and kiss Swofford's ring. Tired of this BS. Does any leader at FSU have a pair?

    55Nole

  • Heck yeah it got ripped off!!! Swofford could've done much better than that!!! Texas is the biggest state in the Big 12 and California is the biggest in the Pac-12 and they manage to get more considering the population of their member states. The ACC will now stretch from Florida to Massachusetts and that's the best Swofford & the ACC could come up with!?! 17 per school!?! The Big 12 sees more than that with 10 schools!!!!

  • Not sure they could have done much better but have the same deal without the 3rd tier rights would help the schools better individually. I guess the ACC doesn't get the big picture and havent for some time. it's time to get out of this conference before its too late. With some good leadership this could be a good conference in football

Exactly. Its a good deal if we had options to get more money for 3rd tier. Since we can't, its not. UF is still making 10 million more on tv revenue before the SEC renegotiates.

    fsukum

  • FSU did, the ACC got more than they deserve.

    gonoles1

  • It depends on if there really is a "get out" date of 3 years. If the ACC can get out of the contract after 3 years that will allow the conference to grow and become a better power. In 3 years we could get a 25 million per team deal.

I keep reading this, and don't get it. We don't even sell out all our games, yet we are supposed to get some SEC-like TV contract?

Neither did UF. I think the only part of the deal I don't like is the Tier 3 give-a-way.
It will be interesting to see the details of the deal.
My understanding is that college football viewership across the board was down last year.
If this is the case then it was a pretty good deal.
A 30% raise is not to be sneezed at.
Personally, I think after the playoff is finalized there will be quite a bit more movement.
All sports teams across the platform have problems selling out their arenas/fields.
Even the Boston Red Sox's might not sell out some games this year and break their streak [at least that is what the papers up here are saying].
Winning fills up the stands, but it is only temporary as all teams cycle down.
Funny, I think it is crazy that so many fans will go to a spring practice [other to enjoy a nice spring Tallahassee day].
But that is not a sign of a failing enterprise.
There is so much misunderstanding about how athletics works at the college level in all these posts, but one thing is for sure, we are going to go through changes over the next few years that will make the posters on here go crazy.

We got screwed in the fact that we can't pursue 3rd tier rights to close the $10 million gap with UF.

The 3rd tier thing is puzzling, however i think too many people are looking at this like the tv contract with another conference is going to solve all the budget problems and suddenly give FSU this big advantage.

Not to mention, and I have said this already, we have no idea what is going to happen with these pending lawsuits and the NFL, football from top to bottom could be like boxing in 10-15 yrs, granted thats drastic but nobody knows.

I will tell you this, there are a lot of nervous people out there.

Pben, I think that is the elephant in the room. The chairman of the board of trustees is Andy Haggard, a very successful plaintiff attorney. His firm had at least two jury verdicts for over $100M. I know for a fact that his firm has been aware of this issue for at least 10 years. So, we at least should be as well prepared for this as any other university.

Because it is not about butts in the seats it is about eyes on a TV.... No one in the ACC and only a handful of teams in the country get the viewership that FSU does...look at the last 8-9 bowl games we have been in...we have blown out the ratings in each of them.....

I think the question is......in the end did the ACC really get screwed or is the rest of the conference that weak in viewership that this is the best deal they can do?

FSU needs true leadership right now...we dont need to make a rash decision but someone has to be awake at the wheel...... This is a very serious and big decision and IMHO we do not currently have the right individuals in place in key areas to make the best choices for our University.

I think our bowl games were all very good matchups, not to mention very good time slots, last yr we were the only game on TV during christmas break that day at a perfect time (5pm)est) and playing Notre Dame. FSU still has name recognition and that helps, but the less time we spend away from being elite the more that fades.

Agreed, the argument that because FSU didnt sellout every game then it doesnt deserve a better deal is a straw man. FSU gets viewers, which is what TV contracts are about! Having fans outside of driving distance HELPS ratings.

Football has changed - seling out games doesnt mean as much. Being one of the top TV pulls (which FSU is) is more important.

With the HD TV, Big screen TV, etc the future is TV not attendence.

I know most will cringe when I say that but it is what it is. Think about the music industry - all the money was in the reocrds and touring was done to promote your records. Now all the money is in the tours and the records are just a way to promote the tour.

I think college football is going the same way - used to be all about filling your seats now it is about getting people to tune it. Though winning will get the seats filled again which is gravy on top.

Good post, a lot of truth to all that, and to be honest going to games is becoming a hassle.

This especially applies to FSU, since Tallahassee isnt the easiest place to get to if you live out of town or out of the state.

  • We all know about the "geographic constraints" on Tallahassee, and the comparative populations and fan bases within xyz miles. There is a lot the university could work on to get people in the seats. We open our season with FOUR September home games, only one of which is against quality opponent (nothing we can do about WVU now). I don't understand why they can't be spread out. Why can't we have a cupcake the weekend before UF like they do? Is that on us, or the ACC? September games are miserable. Getting to Tallahassee isn't easy and the hotels gouge you. 4 weeks in a row is absolutely absurd.

We'll see what they do about kickoff times. Doak needs some work, but that isn't going to change with the current budget issues.

Well if we made a jump to a perceived football conference, the cupcakes will always be there. My idea of fun, is not a noon kickoff in early september against Murray St.

This is a FSU problem, not an ACC one, we control our OOC schedule.

Thats the ACC not being smart with secheduling Confer. games the week before rivalry week. A lot of ACC teams play SEC teams on those dates, Off the top of my head, UGA/GT, Clem,USCjr, and FSU/UF. UF has not played a conference game the week before our game since '04. USCjr has had a bye or cup cake the week before Clem since '06.

I'm not talking about playing cupcakes, I'm talking about WHEN we play them. I'm pretty sure the conference has a hand in that. If they tell us conference games are in weeks 3,4, and 6-11, not much we can do (except tell the conference to shove it). If FSU is committing to dates with the cupcakes before addressing conference schedule, that's on the administration.
