The question I have is why don't they cast a wider net? This year the oline should be good but the year after it is a crape shoot especially if erving leaves early. Taking 6 one year then 2 jucos the next does not make any sense.
Well wider net means outside of FL.
"Some people think football is a matter of life and death, I assure you, it is much more serious than that."
Great post, Fish! We still need to cast a wider net, though. Great breakdown on FL prospects, but we need to recruit AL and GA just as hard.
Curious why you say the following: "It is the toughest area . . . to recruit no matter which school...outside of Bama, LSU, USC, Ohio State and Michigan." Why do they do a better job of recruiting OL? Because of geography (if so, please explain), or because they're just more focused on the OL?
"I never knew I had a foot until I noticed it was on your neck"
I agree with most of the initial post. However, IMO being in the ACC doesn't matter or we would be having the same issues with recruiting for the dl. However, just to be clear, I don't want to be in the ACC.
Also, as to why the net isn't being cast wider is because we are casting our ol net as wide we are casting our nets for our other position groups. We do not need to cast a very wide net for any other position group. so, no complaining, here are the alternatives: 1. Cast a MUCH wider ol net early. On a good year (2011) you will end up with a bit less talent than you would have with a narrower net. However, it keeps 2010, 2012 probably this year from happening.
2. get a new ol coach that high quality ol kids will to play for on a consistent basis.
Then you can recruit the way we are recruiting with a narrow net and do well. That is my preference because FSU will have top to bottom better Jimmies and Joes on the ol.
It is clear after 7 classes of Trickett that the method for getting ol commits has to change if we are going to keep him and we are to build at least decent ol's on a consistent basis and to put overall stability into the ol as a position group.
As to Um, i agree they need kirkland. whether they need him as badly as we do is a subject for debate with good arguments on both sides.
Really, in the end, why does the ol recruiting stand out like a sore thumb. Two reasons:
1. It is more often than not obviously deficient as compared to all other position groups.
2. with the expcetion of 2010, the results on the field have been deficient. Let me be clear. I mean getitng 3rd and 1 on a consistent basis, good pass proection on a consistent basis. I do not mean the ol does not look good at times.

Regarding the wider net (outside of Florida is what it seems most posters are referring to).
From just this past year ...
Watson ... England
Glauser ... Switzerland
Faircloth ... GA
Foose ... NJ
Jackson ... GA
Matius ... NJ
Erving ... GA
Committed as of now ...
Golson ... AL
Hoefield ... LA
Offered (assuming the 247 list is correct) ...
Bell ... AL
Munger ... OH
A'Shawn Robinson ... TX
Tyrone Crowder ... NC
Chongo Kondolo ... CA
Darius James ... TX
Ethan Pocic ... IL
Derwin Gray ... DC
David Dawson ... MI
and I noticed a few more from out of state.
Our net was cast from CA to MI to NJ to TX to AL to GA. Not sure they make many nets bigger than that.
Good job Fish.
I think these next two-three years are critical for FSU regarding the OL. You're only as good as those guys up front. They need to be recruiting their a**es off for the Class of 2014 right now. Throw all your eggs in Kirkland, Golson, and Bell....for this class.
Wider net? I think we're going to need a bigger boat!
I didn't mention this, but the whole "Trickett is the world's greatest talent evaluator" is bunk. bunk. If you disagree, please explain the multitude of misses he has at FSU. A ton of them. Hell, almost as many misses as hits.
Quite frankly, Trickett has a reputation while at FSU he has neither earned nor deserved. UF and Bama are not walking in Trickett's wake to see who he spots so they can swoop in and offer.
almost all of the time when we are on the same players it's because with their own independent evals they have concluded a player is good. If they relied on Trickett evals and swooped in their ol would suck as bad as our ol.
Bama would not have won 1 mnc much less 3 mnc's if they relied on Trickett getting on a kid before offering a schollie.
Now Golsen leaving...
