For you to consider the season redeemed and not call for Jimbo's head?
If we win out in convincing fashion (no squeakers), including whatever postseason scenario we back into, I will see this as a turning point in CJF'S coaching career. It is a tall order with uf looking good, but not impossible. Anything less and I will still have serious doubts about the next few years.
I think we do win out. I think we win the ACCCG.
To me that would be a great year.
Win the ACC, beat UF.
If we did all of that I would be happy, even if we lost our BCS game. I think that would be 12-2 with wins over all 3 state schools and a conference championship. If that happens, that's a great season.
That's not happening, however.
Win out, with strong emphasis on the convincing fashion part. That means every game, including UF. If we are as talented as we thought, that is not unreasonable.
Throw out our first two games, we have underperformed in every one. That includes against Wake, where we coasted in the second half.
Win a BCS game.
Sadly, I still expect us to lose another game. I wish that wasn't true, but Jimbo is still learning and we don't have the depth at several positions. I hope I'm wrong - and so do all the people at the Saloon that saw me turn in raging asshole last Saturday night.
That said, if we beat UF & UM, win the ACC, & win the BCS bowl - I will consider it a good season, not great, but good. The expectations were high at the beginning of the season, but realistically, doing all that in your 3rd year (considering where he started) would be pretty impressive.
Truthfully, if we beat UF & UM, go to the ACC Champ game and lose that or the BCS bowl - it's still an improvement over last year.
As I've said before, I think Jimbo is still dealing with not having only players that he recruited. The guys from the Bowden years that are starting are very talented, but we don't have the depth that we will have in 2 years (assuming good seasons and the same level of recruiting). Look at the cupboard on the offensive side of the ball - upcoming QBs look very promising, WR, please, stacked, TE looks good, even the OL should have plenty of depth in 2 years. Now look at defense (where Jimbo wasn't in charge 3 years ago), we lose GReid and we have a soph & a frosh fighting for the spot. We lose BJenk and we have no clear solid back up (a guy who was supposed to rshirt may well be our back up now). etc etc.
In 2014 we'll have nothing but Jimbo players, and we'll have a HC that has had 4 years experience. If he can't get it done or come close at that point, I'll be the first to sign up for the fire Jimbo campaign. But, until then, I'm looking for improvement, and that's it.
Laura, this is going to sound odd, but I want to see if he really has learned from his mistakes, like he claimed postgame. The offense ineptitude is all on him, so can he adjust during a game, and help his qb and oline out?
We are not winning a MNC this yr and EJ is not winning a Heisman, so lets see if there is the potential to be a dangerous team in the future.
I guess I want to see if this guy can change things and make adjustments to get better, taking responsibility is a great step (in his late yrs Bowden never did that), but know lets see how we go from here, next big test will be in Miami, these upcoming 2 games won't do much to clear this up. BC is awful and I don't care what Duke's record is, we should be able to beat them soundly.
@Miami and @Vt will tell the story.
UF is at home, and we will be amped, blah, blah...plus they will probably begin their fade here shortly.
good question. What do you do with a coach that loses games he shouldn't but then wins the big ones but perpetually falls short of a championship?
I think that Jimbo could work if he hired a good OC and turned the offense over completely to him. That's not going to happen though because Jimbo is an "offensive guru".
We have to win the ACC and Jimbo would have to give up playcalling duties after this year. It is the only thing I will accept. I don't care if we win out, I am tired of his playcalling.
But I am a peon so my opinion means nothing.
@Miami is one of our next 2 games.
agree with everything you said though.
I actually felt better once I looked at his bonus structure and realized that he might have lost > .5 million dollars with that loss. That's a lot of motivation not to make that mistake again.
The only thing that is giving me the slightest hope right now (and I mean a very slight hope) was what you just mentioned: Jimbo publicly admitted that he screwed up the play calling. A coach that can evolve is a good thing. Hell, even ESPN ran a story yesterday about Spurrier's evolution as a playcaller who wants to run with more consistency!
But I agree with you, I think we fade into another 3 loss season, which tells me we've gone as far as we're gonna go with Jimbo.
Redeemed? LMAO. Nothing would redeem this year from the screwjob Fisher gave us Saturday night.
But it's very likely we keep Fisher if he goes 10-2 regular season, even if he doesn't win the ACC. And I think there's a good chance we finish around 10-2 (with 9-3 and 11-1 being possible as well). If we go 8-4 I'd fire him prior to the bowl game and get a head start on the coaching search. Unfortunately 9-3/10-2 is too "good" to get rid of him, despite having the better roster than every team he will have faced.
At this point, the only option for Jimbo to end the "lets fire him" dialogue is to win a BCS bowl by a substantial margin.
so we have to finish in the top 5, or fire our coach that has less than 3 years of head coaching experience?
I'm sure some people believe that, but it seems unrealistic.
I want and pray for no more losses this season, but I don't see anyone getting even close to fired if we go 12-2 - on the contrary, I expect it would be viewed as a 'good' season. If we go 10-3 (no acc champ game, win bowl), people will complain, but he won't be fired. 9-4 people complain loudly, the administration ignores it. 8-5, Jimbo might actually get an OC - still not fired.
I actually think Jimbo would have to lose out for the administration to actually fire him.
anyway, back to ing for no more losses.
The only redeemer is a complete win out, with an ACC title and an orange bowl victory.
I agree with you, but what on field product do you think will demonstrate that he has learned and changed? If he's still being conservative and we only beat BC, Duke, etc. by 3 or 10 points, I'm not happy.
Cannot be "redeemed". Salvaged would be a better word and that would take winning out regular season and most importantly, JImbo must show and prove that he has actually learned from this colossal loss.
Deserve got nothing to do with it...
