That dynamic (300 pounders) is of much more value if employed on base downs. Not really worried about splash plays (sacks and TFLs) as the collective talent of FSU's DT will produce enough of those. A lot of McAlister's success at making splash plays last season was likely helped by him not having to play starter level snaps and being kept fresh.

I agree with a lot that has been said in this thread. One point that I would like to add piggybacking off of Bushidonole original point, with better DT's this year I think our ends can have a much better season than many originally predicted.
With Timmy and Golman clogging the middle they should easily command double teams as I see neither of those guys consistently being blocked one on one. Dan Hicks seems like he picked up where he left off before the switch to Defensive End. If Mario can make a commitment to his weight and if Casher can remain healthy all of the ends should be able to wreak havoc. Especially with blitzes mixed in.
A lot of speculation with nothing to substantiate. Who knows how Goldman will perform? Simply because he is projected to be a 1st round talent, does not mean he is there now. I am much more concerned with how the two DT's function together than mere girth and potential. I see your point, but, like I said earlier, we can agree to disagree. Great problem to have.
93, I think we will see even more penetration this year with the more aggressive scheme from Demonte and TJ, etc.
Goldman was awesome in the Spring Game and has improved 100% from last year. But I don't think he will start.
I think Timmy starts at NT and DMac at DT and then they are backed up by JMac, NLS and Goldman. All three can play NT IMO and JMac and Goldman can play the 3tech. Mitchell will get some reps in mop up, as will Shanks. But Mitchell is ahead of Shanks after watching the Spring Game. Bryant will shirt.
Jernigan is being mocked right now between 10-20 next year because he doesn't have elite size(Goldman does). But he is an elite football player. Sharriff Floyd is a better prospect as far as the combine is concerned, but he is not a better football player on Saturdays. I think the only chance Jernigan comes back is if he is injured, God forbid. And even then, it's not a given(see Bjenk).
Just an embarrassment of riches at the DT position. Won't be mad with any of the scenarios discussed.
My how things have changed! Remember a few years back when we had a total of zero defensive linemen that weighed 300 pds and generated next to no penetration?
And a good one at that. But I bet you a brew McAlister plays himself into the first round of the draft.
I have thought this for the LONGEST time- thank you for putting it into words. Very few 1st-round DTs wear skinny jeans.
Also, I hate to pile on.. But if you look at pictures of McDaniel, assuming he is 5'11, he truly doesn't look more than 260 lbs.

This year? He looks every bit of 290+ now in his pictures. I have never seen him in his current physical condition.
I completely disagree. I would post pictures from his Facebook, but that would be a little much. I want to agree with you and believe the reports, but i just cant. We can just agree to disagree.
Maybe Trey Pettis should start wearing designer clothes.
JMac is a new man, so whatever he did, it's working.
My Man!!!!!!!!!!! What's Gucci?
"Ward, Weinke, Winston = WINNERS"
You don't need to post pictures from his Facebook, Noles247 has posted several ones of him from spring. Furthermore, guessing someones weight based on a picture is, well, absurd. Several posters on hear have posted similar comments to mine on McDaniel.
But we'll just agree to disagree, I suppose.
