I vote for Winston at QB with Trickett ready to jump in and help, similar to how ND has operated this year. The strength of the team will be the OL and the RBs, so we should be able to bring Winston along slowly without asking him to do too much. Of course, I haven't seen him play at this level yet, but why not go ahead and lobby for him to be the starter?
I don't think we replace Pryor. I think our shotgun 2 running back formation will just be Freeman and wilder and we won't run iform unless we are at the goalline.
With a 3 way qb battle, I expect one of them to actually be better than ej.
My biggest concerns on offense are playcalling and rythym. We can't keep subbing people every play. If you want to throw a third wr on third down that's obviously legit but switching from 4 wide to 2 tight ends and 2 running backs three times on a drive ruins rythym
On defense, defensive end is obviously the biggest concern, especially with dj Eliot gone. His replacement will have to do a great job because Casher needs to be ready and Newberry needs to improve.
I think Karlos needs to move to lb and start.
I am not concerned at all at DT
DB looks a little light on depth but Rhodes really looked average the second half of the year and Darby should make strides from the freshman darby
I also hope jimbo finds a way to work bracy in on offense and special teams because he is a special player
On offense, I think the only thing we need is a more consistent QB. With a stronger OL and 2 consistent RB's and depth at WR, whoever the QB is just needs to get the ball to the playmakers and make all the throws when needed. Something EJ failed to do at times. Hopefully Fisher puts whoever that is in a good position to succeed.
Defense worries me. I know we have a ton of talent coming back but DE worries me and will the LB's step up are the major questions I have, besides who the DC will be. I'm expecting a step back by the defense early on in the year until the new DC figures out who fits best in whatever scheme he ends up running, and the guys adjust to it.
ST's - It'll be hard to replace Hopkins but hopefully the freshman can come in and do a good job. Beatty should improve and our returners should be improved. Hopefully we get to see Bracy back there too.
I've heard the same as well. Makes for a terrble home schedule. Attendance is going to be God aweful.
Idaho may not be for sure.
Actually, there is a chance the ACC really screws us and takes VT off the home schedule and makes Syracuse a home game, and then makes GT an away game. Which would be a disaster.
While there are no HUGE games on the home schedule, the overall schedule will be much better at home. For starters, we only have 1 d-1aa opponent. Secondly, it appears as though Wofford, Nevada, and Idaho (assuming they are there) will be more spread out on the schedule, so we don't have 4 weeks in a row of crap. Thirdly, our ACC home games are better. We are going from BC, Clemson, WF, and Duke to Maryland, NC State, Miami, and most likely VT. Those aren't murderer's row, but at least we are getting rid of those terrible "gimme" type games.
I think where we can see a huge plus at QB is consistency. I think a huge problem with this offense was JF thinking he had something at QB that he didn't have. This season coming up, I think he "should" have a much better idea of what he is working with. If we have a QB that can/can't/will/won't run, he will know, same with decision making, arm strength, etc.
"Some people think football is a matter of life and death, I assure you, it is much more serious than that."
The OL is not really a problem at all. I am not sure how people can say it underachieved. When our offense sputtered this season, very rarely was it because of the OLine. Now, every single unit on every single team is going to have an off game, and for us, I would say the OL like terribly against VT.
You look at the other games our offense struggled...
Georgia Tech - OL actually played a great game. We ran it down their throats (until JF decided to stop running) and all of our problems on O were on the passing game; EJ's fumble, Kelvin fumble, sacks that were on EJ because he can't scramble or throw the ball out of bounds.
Florida - The offense struggled in this game because EJ was throwing INT's and fumbling. If you rewatch the game, EJ had plenty of time to throw the ball. The run game was averaging 4.4.YPC, but we didn't commit to it, we decided it would be better to put the game in EJ's hands.
Virginia Tech - This is the one game they really struggled.
NC State - In the first half they dominated the game. In the 2nd half, NC State came up with our offenses kryptonite; run blitz and if it is a pass, bank on EJ missing the throw.
People just like to use Trickett as a scapegoat. Our OL played great in 7-8 games, poorly in 1 game, and then in the other 3 it was a result of our team not being able to hold on to the ball, which is not an OL issue.
If we land Ellis Johnson our D will be tremendous next year. Karlos in the hybrid spot will be the star we envisioned during recruiting. I am actually not worried about DE. Mario will trim fat and look outstanding next year and Giorgio has come on of late as well. Then you have Casher who was a top 50 recruit and will be 6'4 260 and likely two Jucos it seems. Solid depth.
Stop it. This does not fit my agenda.
We are going to suck until we beat the first team by 50, then we are sure-fire national title winners with no excuse but to blow out every opponent, until we lose, in which case we always sucked and everyone should be fired.
In all seriousness, nice list. We are dangerously, ridiculously thin at DE and we have very unproven but talented corners. Offense should be power run with lots of play action next year.
I forgot about Hicks. I was perplexed that he was moved to TE in the first place, especially after Haplea transferred here. I thought he was doing fine at DE before the move.
