Former Miami coach Randy Shannon could be joining Florida State as the defensive coordinator
by Tom D'Angelo
Jimbo Fisher may be looking at a former Florida State nemesis as his next defensive coordinator.
Randy Shannon’s name is causing a lot of buzz in South Florida when it comes to filling the void created when Mark Stoops left FSU to take over the Kentucky program. Shannon, the former Miami head coach and linebacker, is in his first season as the linebackers’ coach at TCU.
Shannon has always had a good relationship with the coaches in Tallahassee, even while running the Hurricanes program. And Stoops worked under Shannon at Miami, serving as the defensive backs coach for three years while Shannon was the Hurricanes’ defensive coordinator.
Shannon was at Miami from 1991-1997, as a graduate assistant, defensive line coach and linebackers’ coach. He moved onto the Dolphins for three years as a defensive assistant before returning to the Hurricanes as the defensive coordinator for six years.
Shannon then replaced Larry Coker as head coach in 2007, lasted four seasons. He was fired after a 7-5 regular season in 2010 with a 28-22 overall record. Shannon’s teams placed fifth, third two times and second in the ACC’s Coastal Division and he was 0-2 in bowl games, leaving before the 2010 Sun Bowl.
Through it all, though, Shannon’s recruiting classes were continually ranked in the top 20. During his four years as a head coach Rivals.com ranked Miami’s recruiting classes 19th, fifth, 15th and 16th.
Fisher said Monday that Stoops likely would return to help the Seminoles during their preparation for the Jan. 1 Orange Bowl and he may or may not be on the sidelines for the game. Defensive ends coach D.J. Eliot, who is joining Stoops at Kentucky as his defensive coordinator, also is expected to return for bowl game preparation.
But Fisher also said he was checking with the NCAA to see if he could name a coach if the departed coaches are still hanging around, a sign he is close to filling the openings.
I'd love to have Shannon. Always liked him, even at UM.
thanks for posting that, but please, for the love of all things holy please don't let it be Shannon.
Chris Nee of 247Sports.com. You can follow me on twitter @CNee247.
would convince me that jimbo is indeed trying to get fired
Would really have to be striking out on other choices.
Wouldnt mind bringing him in as LB coach. Do people/schools in S Fla still like him? Could replace the void left by Gran in regards to S Fla. recruiting
What's the argument against him?
As an X's and O's guy he isnt bad, but still a substantial downgrade from Stoops. Jimbo owned his offenses throughout his career. Better offenses absolutely owned Shannon D typically. There is enough red flags to go up that the best job he could get after UM is as a LB coach at TCU. As a recruiter, he burned a ton of bridges down in South Florida.
Thanks for the answer.
Chris said something like this earlier. How did he do this?
I will be in complete disbelief if Shannon gets a job here FSU.
I would only want Shannon as a LB Coach, not DC. Pruitt and Shannon...sign that up!
"Some people think football is a matter of life and death, I assure you, it is much more serious than that."
he wasn't bad
back when you could still stop 90% of college offenses running strictly cover 2
but then offense in CFB evolved
1 of the least creative DC's in the game
I agree 100%, there are still worse DC's, such as the guy who is the DC in Miami now. What a HUGE drop off since Shannon left. His D was ranked 16th in his last season in 2010. In 2012? 117th.
To answer the question EZ E, there are a bunch of schools in the area he showed obvious favoritism to such as Northwestern and Booker T. Central HS (where Devonta Freeman came from) was absolutely ignored and never visited by Shannon in quite some time. When we were recruiting Nick O'Leary (and Brissett for a time) the HC there mentioned that Miami never visited (Dwyer HS in Palm Beach). All of this is if IIRC. A good amount of coaches in the area absolutely loathed Shannon.
If its as a LB coach, or even as far as a CO DC then i'm fine. But as entirely the DC...........nah. Do not want.
Man 2 under. Miami played man 2 under.
I threw up a little bit.
I, with no real information, agree with Nee and whomever else that he's not a real candidate. We can hope.
Oh god please make this happen.
#1 - vanilla coaching scheme - 4-3 Tampa 2 every play really not FSU style IMO
#2 - recruiting - In 2008 he got 8 kids from Miami (7 from Northwestern 1 Booker T).
2009 - only 2 (Lamar Miller, Olivier Vernon).
2010 - only 3 (Eduardo Clements, Allen Hurns, Stephen Morris)
Most people feel these kids where handed to Shannon and he never really tried to recruit any of them. Coaches all over Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach, complained that Randy never bothered to show up on campus. Then in 2010 came the icing on the cake, when Randy tried to tell the local paper that he is going back to Miami's roots by recruiting DT Jeffrey Brown from Evanston, IL. Randy said that when Miami was at it's best we recruited players like Cortez Kennedy from Chicago. The sad part is Randy may have actually believed that Brown was going to be the next Kennedy. Whatever the reason the writing was on the wall and Randy had to go.
Sorry for the long post - I just hope for FSU's sake that they stay as far away from him as possible. I would hate to see a good team and a team I respect start going down hill.
This. Let me add that Jeffrey brown was then kicked of the team in 2010 for alleged rape. I also would stay clear away fom him as possible. I'll always love Randy because he was a cane legend, buy coaching wise = meh
Lebron and Dwayne Wade at the Canes basketball game
Yeah Randy isn't a good fit at FSU, any Nole that would be okay with him isn't thinking clearly
Plus he is as Cane as it gets, I doubt he would come to FSU under any circumstance and I see no way in hell him and Jimbo get along
They are two alpha males with different philosophies who would butt heads at every turn imo
Would probably be the worst hire possible for so many reasons, namely the fact that many south florida high schools aren't down with his style of recruiting as mentioned
