Quick hits from Orange Bowl press conference

  • Eric Poms, Orange Bowl CEO ... Northern Illinois is 9th in scoring offense, FSU is 2nd in scoring defense.

Northern Illinois coach Rod Carey was just named the coach of the Huskies today (Dave Doeren is going to N.C. State).

Carey: We are sure excited. It has been a crazy weekend. Certainly a great opponent in Florida State. We will represent the MAC very well.

Coach Jimbo Fisher: We're very excited for this opportunity. We know Northern Illinois has had a fabulous year. Our first BCS bowl since 2005.

Carey: Jordan Lynch is a good football player. I haven't seen FSU except for on TV this year. They're unbelievable on defense and great on offense. I know that we will work and find a way to get it done.

Carey: Regarding the ESPN comments, he says "everybody gets an opinion. We're in the opinion business right now."

Carey: Team found out on TV that it would be playing in a BCS bowl (no advance notice).

Fisher: It's very important for us to play well, to establish a tradition and a winning culture.

Fisher: You don't get in this game unless you are a good football team. They've earned the right to be here.

Carey: Dave Doeren's parting words were "Are you sure you want it?" Praised Doeren for helping him and the team get to where the Huskies are.

Carey: Yes (NIU will have a chip on its shoulder). Every kid in this conference has a chip on his shoulder.

There will be a press conference on Wednesday, Dec. 5 at 4 p.m. in South Florida.
