I've been worried for a little while now that being in the ACC may start working against FSU on the recruiting trail in a very negative way. I'm generally speaking from the viewpoint of SEC coaches because of course we are all in the south and go after many of the same kids more frequently.
1. I'd point out how far down in the pecking order ACC schools are for non BCS games. I mean the CFA bowl takes the ACC #2 while they take the SEC #4 or #5, or something like that. It's just the unfortunate state of things for us right now.
2. Again, if I were a coach at a school in the SEC recruiting against FSU I would mention how the lack of revenue coming in "can" cause a decrease in the level of coaching you would get at a school in the ACC, FSU included. I'd point out how many coaches on FSU's staff took lateral moves. Granite Coley went to another ACC school, but that doesn't look good for us.
3. I'd definitely mention again how disadvantageous it is for ACC schools in regards to current title and future playoff consideration. I wouldn't be short of confidence telling a kid that 1 loss in the ACC pretty much puts you out of the top 4, and then point to history. Then I'd point to FSU being jumped by 2 loss teams in 2012, even though at the time we had only 1 loss.
4. I'd mention how the ACC raised their exit fee to a ridiculous amount, 50 mill if I remember correctly, to hand cuff it's schools from leaving. Then ask the kid if it sounds like the ACC is a place football schools want to be?
I know I'm considered a negative nancy around here and it really pisses people off, but I'm really worried about the future of FSU football. I think there is a strong possibility that if we don't change conferences or the ACC doesn't shape up, FSU football could slowly drop into a 2nd tier program in 4-5 years. I might add that as intelligent people we all realize how important it is to make things happen instead of react to things. Thus, it's important that as fans of FSU football we continue to voice our concerns surrounding the future of Seminole football as it relates to the ACC. I'm sure FSU's administration and boosters are paying close attention to that lawsuit the ACC filed against Maryland and the amount of that 50 million they end up being responsible for. IMO, in the intermediate and long run, if it's determined that schools leaving the ACC will in fact be responsible for paying the entire 50 mil, FSU eats it, pays up, and leaves for greener pastures if the opportunity presents itself.
(rant off, light me up lol)
I'd actually like to hear what some of the mods have to say in response to this. Heck, just tell Bone he's crazy if that's how you feel.
I think you make valid points. Except for number 2. All of the coaches that left got promotions/raises. Even Coley. He was technically our OC but everyone knows who calls the plays. Him bolting for Miami was a result of being back in his hometown as well as the chance to actually coordinate his own offense and call his own plays. Other then that you're right about everything you voiced concern over. The only problem is that everyone already realizes what you're saying, we're just kind of stuck in our situation. We can't bolt to another conference if we haven't been invited. Until we do receive an invite, there's not a whole lot we can do from a fan/student/or even administration stand point is there?
You really think they're talking to football recruits about conferance exit fees? most of these recruits would not be going to a major college without football. They're not going to comprehend it.
I will agree with those of you who think I'm giving these kids too much credit on comprehending all this stuff. I think my title should be changed to something regarding a slow bleed type scenario with all the disadvantages of being in the ACC. I for one believe they are there and plans to mitigate any potential fall because of them should be a high priority. I mean FSU football is our money tree for other athletic programs at FSU as well. We have to protect our best asset.
I doubt many kids think of any of this. The main thing they see, in my opinion, is the rabid following of fans for the SEC.
We make fun of them, but 80,000 people chanting SEC, SEC, SEC and going wild with support even when their own teams aren't playing makes an impression. Then you've got the whole... hell what is it now, 7 BCS national championships in the past 8 years?
I think that is all the negative recruiting you need comparing the SEC to the ACC.
