Academics played a big role in this. He loved Stanford but the distance hurt them.
The Commodores received more good news on Thursday when they added the commitment of Jacksonville (Fla.) Bartram Trail OL Jesse Burkett to the fold.

No way to sugarcoat this one, big whiff.
"England expects that every man will do his duty."

ehhh not a big shock
this kid has been interested in schools like stanford, UNC, and vandy for a while. Education is a big thing to him and he is going to get an outstanding education at Vanderbilt and play football. i wont fault a kid for taking advantage of getting a degree from Vanderbilt
FSU Ambassador to the masses
Not a big whiff. Very replaceable. Applefield, please.
"Some people think football is a matter of life and death, I assure you, it is much more serious than that."
We say that every year as the board thins and then on nsd, we're left short handed.
Exactly right. This was definitely a painful miss. I'm sure once Applefield commits somewhere else, the same thing will be said.

Missing on potential OL particularly OT hurts FSU...
How can anyone say it doesn't hurt? We need tackles and cant seem to get any. Don't give me we lead for so and so. July leads mean squat. It does no good to lead in July but not on signing day when it counts. At this point it is on Jimbo as much as trickett. They do have time to make me eat my words, but I'm not going to hold my breathe on it.
We will get tackles, but aside from Frith, it will be names we first hear of in November. Or we'll raid our defense or our TE corps. That's just how it works at FSU.
I believe Burkett is a developmental OT prospect. To me that is a kid that will play 2-3 years after redshirting. Had we taken one in 2012 when we got the two Juco OTs (Watson & Glauser) and taken one last year or not lost out on Gholson at the end of the process we would be in much better shape at the position. Ideally, we would have had an OT board going into next season that looked:
SO(redshirt)-Developmental prospect from 2012
FR (redshirt)-Wilson Bell
Instead we are worrying about losing out on kids like Burkett. We really need a Juco OT and a stud high school kid who can play right away. If we land Maverty and Roderick Johnson than losing on Burkett really isn't a blow at all. Like most on here I'm not confident we are going to close on any of these top prospects coming down the stretch. I would like to see us land another 1-2 developmental OT prospects.
got to offer Applefield, close up Johnson and add a JUCO (Blair or Mavety)
People freaking out for no reason
Ive seen Burkett play many times, very doubtful he is an OT at the next level
My father coaches at the high school that played Bartram Trail the past 2 seasons for their spring game and he made the same observation to me after seeing the kid play.
This is coming to the person that believed we would land multiplies from Eluemunor, Prince, Mavety, and Sharpe.
In reality we have like a 35% of landing one.
My post was more of a general statement
Sure but from what Ive seen I definitely wouldnt consider this a miss. Really hard for me to believe we even recruited him.
People ignoring that academics are one of the key barriers that does hurt FSU in OL recruiting.
When a kid is interested in academics, and Stanford and Vanderbilt are involved, FSU will lose every time. It's not a "whiff". Kid wants a good education and will be getting a good education.
FSU has a large number of advantages in recruiting. Academics isn't one of them.
Linc, I'm with you. I like Burkett, but he is a lot like Eberle. Very versatile and a guy that could play tackle for a game or two, but not the answer to our problems at OT IMO.
You really need to go back and look at the bet man... I said 1 of the 4. For future reference you should probably double check so you dont post something this stupid. Nice try though. Enjoy your weekend.
To an extent, but UGA, LSU, Bama etc are in the same boat as us.
At this point, warm bodies are the answer to our problem.
No reason....no reason to concern ourselves over OT recruiting. Right, because they are just flocking our way these days.
