Rivals Streak Snapped
Entering today's game against the Gators, Florida State held a combined five-game win streak against state rivals Florida and Miami that was snapped in a 37-26 loss to Florida. The streak of five consecutive games won against both teams was tied for the longest in program history with the 1977, 78' and 79' teams that defeated Florida three times and Miami twice.
Noles Lose First Top 10 Matchup with Gators at Home
Florida State entered today's contest with the Gators holding a 5-0-1 record in Top 10 matchups between the two rivals at Doak Campbell Stadium. The 37-26 loss against UF marks Florida State's first loss at home to the Gators under the aforementioned circumstances.
Racking Up The Sacks
Junior Bjoern Werner recorded the first sack of the game when he dropped Florida quarterback Jeff Driskel for a nine-yard loss on the Gator's second drive of the contest in the first quarter. He added his second of the game late in the second quarter when he sacked Driskel for a 10-yard loss. Werner registered 1.5 sacks in the second half, while Tank Carradine also registered a half sack. Werner now has 13.0 sacks on the year and Carradine has 11.0 sacks. Werner also pushed his season total to a career-best 18.0 TFL for 134 yards.
Racking up The Sacks Part II
Bjoern Werner's 13.0 sacks this season place him in a tie for sixth with former Seminole Alonzo Jackson, who recorded the same total in 2002. Carradine's 11.0 sacks tie for ninth in school history on the single-season list.
Werner Forces & Recovers Fumbles
Bjoern Werner was credited with a forced fumble and fumble recovery in the third quarter. The junior left end returned the fumble nine yards. It marked Werner's third career fumble recovery and fourth career forced fumble.
Carradine Ties Career High For Tackles
Tank Carradine led the Seminoles with 11 tackles on Saturday marking the fourth time that he has led the team in tackles this year. Carradine's 11 tackles tied a career high set earlier this year at Virginia Tech.
O'Leary Scores TD In Back-To-Back Games
Nick O'Leary was on the receiving end of Florida State's first touchdown of the game as the sophomore tight end made a tremendous leaping catch for a six-yard TD catch on third down and goal. The touchdown catch was O'Leary's third of the season and the fourth by a tight end this year. O'Leary now has touchdown catches in back-to-back games as he scored on a 10-yard pass from EJ Manuel in the first quarter against Maryland. Manuel's TD pass was also his 46th of his career, putting him tied for seventh on the school list for TD passes with Thad Busby.
Manuel Rushing TDs
Florida State quarterback EJ Manuel gave the Seminoles their first lead of the game in the third quarter scoring from 1-yard out to give FSU a 17-13 advantage. He then added a 22-yard rushing score on the last play of the game. It was Manuel's 10th career rushing TD and third in 2012. FSU has now tallied 34 rushing touchdowns this year, the most on the ground since scoring 35 in 1995. Under Jimbo Fisher, the Seminoles have scored at least one rushing touchdown in 32 of his 39 games as head coach at FSU.
Hopkins Moves Up the Charts
Dustin Hopkins connected on two PATs and his second 50-yard FG of the game in the third quarter moving the senior kicker into sole possession of third place on the all-time NCAA FBS all-player scoring record with 456 points. He now trails Travis Prentice of Miami (Ohio) by 12 points for second place all-time. His 53-yard FG in the third quarter tied Hopkins with Georgia's Billy Bennett for the all-time national field goals made record at 87. Hopkins is the first Seminole to register two field goals of 50 yards or more in a single game since 1985 when Derek Schmidt connected on two 51-yard field goals against Memphis. He now has nine FGs of 50 yards or more giving him the school record for the most career FGs from that distance and beyond surpassing Derek Schmidt, who tallied seven from 1984-87.
Manuel Ties Career-High
FSU quarterback EJ Manuel tied a career-high on Saturday throwing three interceptions against Florida. It marked his second career three INT game with his first coming against Maryland in 2009.
Rodney Extends Streak
Senior wideout Rodney Smith made it 37 consecutive games with a catch as he was on the receiving end of a 4-yard catch with less than a minute left in the second quarter. Smith's streak started back during his sophomore season against BYU (September 18, 2010). E.G. Green (1994-97) has the school record for most consecutive games with a reception at 38. Smith caught two passes against the Gators.
