Has anybody else been worried about this aspect of the kicking game? Don't get me wrong, on shorter kicks I've been impressed by Beatty's accuracy and he does really well with pinning the opponent back. My worry is on the longer punts and has been since the Spring game. It seems when it comes time for him to really boot the ball, he ends up sending it only thirty something yards and sometimes worse. Not sure if this is something that takes time and training to improve or if he is unlikely to gain much more yardage in the future. I guess this is really noticeable, especially after having a guy like Powell who could really change field position with his punts, which definitely saved us a few times when the offense starts to sputter. At first I thought I might be overly critical and had a few close friends say just that and that he was doing great. Now those very same people have started to agree with me and have begun to notice how poorly he seems to do in those scenarios.
Do we not have any walk-ons or other kickers that could be used for longer punts or is he doing a better job than at least some of us think? Curious to see what people think about him. I'm thinking that more people are starting to worry because I heard some people comment on him at the Va Tech game as well.
We knew in the spring this was going to be an issue. In the spring he just kick line drives and no very deep at that. I don't know if this is something that can be improved, I don't know how that works. A QB has arm strength, he can maybe make it a few yards stronger, but it's what they're born with. I don't know if it's the same for punters, but if it is we're going to have to find another because he's just not being a field changer.
I only punted when our punter in hs got hurt, but kicked. My opinion is you can definitely improve with repetition and getting comfortable. I don't know how he kicked in hs, but if gran is working on his form or kicking style, it messes with you mentally and sometimes instead of letting your leg strength take over you may overthink things and not make good contact. These are just possibilities. I think with another spring to get comfortable he could make a huge jump next season, but again just thoughts.
I don't think they look to make a switch. Beatty has had struggles, but I believe they want to give him the opportunity to grow at the position.
Dillon Kidd would be the next one to get a shot at the position.

Both Punters and QB's can add more strength and distance to their throws w/ better technique and development.
Shawn Powell wasn't booming the punts he did as a Sr. when he first started out here.
Have to give the kid time to develop and not be so quick to throw out a freshman who is playing like a freshman. Hell, the punts that he's delivering now are better than the ones that he had during the spring game. Kid is a good athlete and I have no doubts that we will see more development from him as he gets more experience and knowledge.
He'll improve. Powell wasn't much better in his first year. Didn't he lose his job to Gano?
Give Werner a chance
