another great post. dang, son you are on a roll. keep it up.
It is a big thing. A marked improvement. Completely agree there. I just feel that he is already paid to create those results and has built-in incentives with regards to achieving such accomplishments.
I know I am likely in the minority in being opposed to a raise. I'm also not going to lose sleep over it if he gets it and it is within reason.

I'm not opposed to it. Moreso because it shows a commitment to our team and to football in general than for Jimbo, although I believe he probably merits it.
Now get our team the hell out of the ACC and I'll be very impressed with our commitment.
How can you suggest that winning the ACC and a BCS Bowl are not results?
Never said they weren't results. They are. I said a potential raise has every bit to do with the idea of image (for FSU as a program) as it does results produced by Fisher.
His current contract has result based incentives built into it. He earns good money for the success he has brought on the field on top of the base he is guaranteed regardless of wins/losses.
This is how i feel. He gets bonuses for winning acc, going to bcs bowl. Was always fine with an extension b/c I understand that's just how it's done. Against a raise, but see the positives in giving one.
As for the perception ... it's certainly improved since Jimbo has been head coach. But I think most outside of the FSU bubble think we underachieved this year. I have no way to prove or disprove it. Just the sense I get from reading and listening. I could be wrong.
I don't think Jimbo should be going anywhere. I also wouldn't be too upset had he taken another job (of course depending on who we would've hired I reserved the right to have changed my mind). Hopefully FSU has a great season next year, matching or exceeding this years team, and Jimbo quiets his critics.

Everyone I've encountered talks about how we had a great year. Nobody expected us to play so well. It's been a long time since FSU has done this well.
We had not won a conference Championship and been to a BCS Bowl in a long time. This program was in the pits when Fisher took over. He has righted the ship and made us a player in the game again. He wins the conference and probably will win a BCS bowl and you don't feel he should get a raise? I'm sorry but you are just wrong.
We must encounter different people.
Also I'm talking about the talking heads in the national media too. And from what I've seen and heard from the discourse in that realm we underachieved. Please note that I'm not arguing that the national media knows more about our team than those that follow closely. Just that their perception of us does matter. It could affect our recruiting, our value to other conferences should we want to leave, attracting sponsors, getting more tickets sold, getting better tv ratings, and etc ...
It could have been much worse of course and perhaps this year will just be a stepping stone to greater things. I hope so. Just not terribly confident in it.
3 points on the topic.
1) I personally don't recall ever taking my predecessors salary into consideration before accepting a position with a company. I have only judged a company based on what they were willing to pay me. Perhaps that is a unique point of view, but I wouldn't know, because I've never had my finger on the pulse of people ruled by perception. I don't think there are a lot of FSU fans stuck in 1995, thinking we shouldn't pay a coach. If we had Saban -- most fans would be willing to pay him whatever it took to keep him (5m, 10m, 15m? whatever)... and our AD department can easily convey this to any potential coaches.... You (and your staff) will be rewarded for leveraging our football team to their true potential.
2) A raise at this point damages the team perception (with me). You don't reward average... and if you do... you are sending the message that we are gullible enough to pay someone more for being average (bad judgement). I'm pretty sure professional coaches know the situation with our program... know where the ACC is... know the season Jimbo has had.... and realize we underachieved. When college gameday is mocking you on national TV for 5-minutes, it's a safe bet, we aren't secretly being thought of as "overachiever, deserving of a raise"
3) Every penny we don't pay him now, can be turned around and put into his salary (or his replacements salary) when he/they earn the keys to the castle after next season. We will be able to pay more in the future (when they truly deserve it), if we refrain from paying him now (when they don't).
