93, solid post.
Please if you see something that I missed or misconstrued, point it out. I'm trying to learn here to and I respect your eye for the game.
As for Ponder, he did manage to get himself drafted in the top half of the first round. I know Viking fans are a little down on him, but his best WR the second half of the year was a practice squad guy and they don't have impeccable pass protection(at least in the games I watched) either. I think EJ had more talent around him than Ponder and I think it will play out the next few years when we see more of his teammates playing on Sunday.
The practice reports I read at the Senior Bowl about EJ were really mixed. Some raved about his athleticism and arm strength and other times "the ball sailed on him and he was inaccurate". I hope he turns out to be another Kapernick, I really do.
Does being drafted in the first round mean it was warranted? I am not here to bash Ponder, as I feel he was the perfect QB to run Fisher's scheme as currently constructed; arguably the most cerebral that Jimbo has ever had. I just don't feel it was a good fit for EJ.
Having more talent around him doesn't necessarily equate to being the best fit for a particular scheme. The WR and TE play was average and highly inconsistent at best. In this scheme, there is more of a premium on the mental aspect than mere physical ability due to pre and post snap reads. In much the same way as when you point out that one missed assignment along the OL often gets misinterpreted as the entire line being horrible, the QB often looks bad when a sight adjustment is missed and he either holds the ball too long, or throws a pick due to throwing to where his target is supposed to be. All it takes is one being on the wrong page.
It's good to be able to disagree without feelings getting hurt.
Absolutely 93, well played!
I was there. He was very up and down...the consensus was "he looks real good at times, and at times he does some dumb stuff"...them plays a great game.
