I posted this in Q&A form in the exact order that I asked the questions. I did this because of Thomas' first answer. I knew people would be surprised by it and I think now that we know more, it was very telling. Some thought I took him out of context or even made it up, but clearly I did not.
Josh Newberg: At what point did you know you were going to sign with Florida State?
Matthew Thomas: Well I decided that morning (Signing Day). The night before I was honestly thinking USC. I was trying to get the LOI and everything ready and signed first. But my mom didn't want to sign it. She didn't want me to go to USC.
JN: So if your mom would have signed the papers you'd be a Trojan right now?
MT: Yeah, I would have been a Trojan.
JN: Are you upset about that?
MT: No I think everything works out how it's supposed to. I'm going to make the best of my situation. It's not like I'm unhappy, I really like Florida State. It's not a problem, I'm happy with my decision.

I seem to recall Colin Cowherd recently stirring up a TON of national attention with another college, because the coach of the program refused to let a kid transfer. I know this situation is a little different, but I think we may be in for the same national scrutiny.
I wouldn't be surprized if this Thomas issue didn't become the national story of the day on sports radio tomorrow or Wednesday. He probably went to the Miami post with full intentions of giving us a black eye in the media, after we didn't immediately agree to his release.

This was my initial reaction but now I don't think it will gain national traction. This isn't just Jimbo, he lets this kid go and you have potential headache for all D1 HCs. I hope we ride it out and don't let it become a distraction. We have 80 or so other kids to worry about. Extremely disappointed in Matt right now.
We have lost players due to being on the other side of this story in the past.
Great player but we don't 'need' him. He was a luxury and nice to steal from our rival. I'm disappointed in his maturity but oh we'll - kids these days.
The difference since Jimbo has been in charge is that we have recruited not only talent, but character as well.
This will work itself out in our favor, one way or the other.
We win some. We lose some.
We "lose" Thomas. But pretty much out of nowhere we get Ramsey and hopefully Walker.
Hello college football recruiting.
84, I'm still sweating Walker btw.
If it were my kid, I'd say ' in life you make decisions and live with the consequences.' And after a year of trying, if they were unhappy, they could look into making a change.
Canolee, you are so right on this.
i have a friend that i played college football with that's coaching back home in memphis,tn. one day we were talking about the kids that come up through high school now and compared them to when we played (c/o 96). he basically stated that most kids involved in sports are used to people giving them their way and their not held accountable for much. it starts with pop warner when kids who show flashes of brilliance and it automatically sets off a bidding war from little leagues coaches to get the best players to play for them. (when i was younger , you played with one team the entire time you were a kid unless your parents moved). most of the kids are made promises to get them to do what the coaches want. so just imagine this is going on from 1st grade through high school. Kids now days will jump from team to team, school to school if they aren't guaranteed playing time, a certain position,or having their butt's kissed a certain way. (look at the 2 schools Thomas is looking at USC AND UGA- the thing they both have in common is the (lack of depth and LBs), so he's basically saying to himself "why go somewhere and workhard and yet i may not get my way, when i go somewhere else where i'm being promised that all i have to do is show up". when my friend sees kids in the hallways and try to get them out for football, the demands he is met with is tragic. (i'll come but i only want to play this position, promise me playing time, etc) i was like wow. if i'd done that with my coaches , they would've basically told me to go play another sport because they didn't need me.
No way this becomes a national story. The vast majority of sports fans couldn't care less about HS football. And if this did hit sports talk radio at all I would bet the slant would be that MT6 was being a high school primadonna wanting his release before even setting foot on campus. Kid is really getting some bad advice because this doesn't play out well for him at all. He has no leverage to force a release and if he decided to just go to USC anyway he goes from having 5 to play 4 to having 4 to play 3 and he would not be able to get an athletic scholarship at any school until fall 2014.
He's gone. I checked his Instagram which used to be decked out in FSU pictures and said GONOLES. It was all deleted. Looks like he wants to go to USC also. We better not release him, even if he is a goner he wasted one of our ships so he needs to have consequences.
I noticed that on his instagram also. Craziness.
Would not completely shock me to hear of his family moving to LA. Funded by Lane and the gang, of course.
Nothing to worry about with Walker. It was one class that he is currently going to make up over the summer and be here in the Fall.
If he had been a summer enrollee, it would have been too late so we got somewhat lucky that he was an EE and this problem popped up early...by however means it was discovered.
