My observations from today's MVP camp, pt 1

  • These are some of my observations from Saturday’s MVP camp in Orlando. It was a great camp put on by Rusty Mansell (247sports.com) and Chad Simmons (Scout.com). There were about 200 kids there, so obviously I couldn’t see as much as I would have liked….Here is Part 1 of my camp breakdown:

** Plant City HS had a good group of athletes at the camp. QB Bennie Coney, WR Lamalin Wiggins and RB Dazmon Patterson.

I didn’t see much of Dazmon, but he tore it up and won MVP at the RB position. What he lacks in height (5’6”) he makes up in shiftiness and speed.

WR Lamarlin Wiggins is a FREAK 6’3, 210. Was selected as one of the top WR’s at the camp. I personally think he’s an OLB at the next level. The kid is a physical specimen with good speed and dominated every DB at the line of scrimmage. However he doesn’t have great top-end speed. I think he should play OLB at the next level, or possibly TE. He could easily put on another 25 pounds.

QB Bennie Coney was selected as one of the top 7 QB’s at the camp. He wasn’t the top passer there, but looked sharp at times. He can really spin it. Needs a lot of work on his feet and delivery.

** WR Trey Griffey (Dr Phillips HS) had a good day. Not the fastest, but he has incredible awareness when the ball is in the air. He doesn’t get a lot of separation, but he will out-jump and out-position almost any DB. He has great hands (wonder where he gets those??), might not be an early offer for the Big 3. Griffey could get a look down the road though. Definitely a D1 prospect.

** ATH Travares Copeland (Treasure Coast HS) won WR MVP and overall camp MVP. He’s one heck of an athlete. He plays mainly QB and WR in high school. At 5’11 he’s probably going to get a lot of looks as a slot receiver by colleges. I think he could also be a lock-down type corner. It will be interesting to see where colleges recruit him, there is not a lot of film of him playing CB. He definitely has the quickness to be a Nick Waisome type cover corner….he’s also got the swag. He’s a great kid with a real personality.

Although he doesn’t have any offers, Copeland told me he’s hearing from UCF, Alabama, Rutgers, USF, UF, FSU, UM and Louisville. He said he’ll visit UM in the spring for a practice and plans to attend the UF and FSU spring games.

** Damonte Jones and Jamonte Jones, twin brothers from Trinity Catholic. They both play CB and were two of the best out there. Just call them the lock-down twins. I talked to a lot of receivers after the camp and asked them who they thought was the best corner and 75% said, “the twins”

** QB Pete Divono (Eastlake HS), even though Divono is a 2013 prospect he was selected as one of the top 7 QB’s at the camp. He’s a dual threat QB, so you couldn’t see all of his arsenal at an event like this, but he still looked great. He’ll be the top QB in Pinellas county next year. He and his dad are big FSU guys, and have been going to FSU’s summer camps since he was a freshman. This summer his dad is going to get him to a few out of state camps like Clemson and maybe UGA.

** QB Hunter Boyette (Westminster HS) is a name to watch for 2014. After the camp one of the QB coaches told me this kid has got some great coaching. He said he does things mechanically at his age that are extremely advanced.

** DE Dwayne Hoilett (Vero Beach HS) was the most impressive defensive lineman I saw. He’s a pass rusher at 6’3” and weighing 220lbs. Explosive off the ball with long arms and legs. He told me he doesn’t have any offers. He’s definitely a D1 prospect.

    Look for Part 2 tomorrow.

  • You think FSU could have the inside track with Copeland since we got Luc, Smith, Brutus, and a preferred walk-on who's name slips my mind?

I believe you're thinking of Cedrick Wilcox.
