First off I'm not psychic nor making guarantees on performance. This is pretty much for fun because I'm trying to make some fun out of what I believe has the potential to be a very tough few years for FSU if we continue down the same path...trending down.
As anybody who reads my posts knows, I don't think Jimbo is the man who can take us to the mountain top. Now not many can. With only 1 champion per year, there just isn't much room on the top. But that's where I want to be and we need the man who can get us there. If Jimbo lets us down over the next couple years, IMO, it's time to shake hands and part ways. 9-10 wins in the ACC isn't something to brag about these days.
Next year Jimbo's obvious problems on the road will be brought front and center at Clemson and UF. He's got me convinced he's good for a BS loss every year also. That puts us at 3 losses, probably no ACCCG, no BCS game, and at best a CFA appearance. One more loss and we are looking at the Music City Bowl or worse because that 4th loss will be a bad one. So Jimbo either gets fired or is put on super secret probation for 1 year, 2014.
My prediction is that Jimbo will continue being Jimbo, and since the buzz of beating uf after 6 ass kickings has worn off, he will be judged properly by our administration and fan base. Basically, his honeymoon is over.
So now I'm thinking new HC. Who's available? Well here is my dream list.
1. Chip Kelly: Please please please pull a Saban and haul ass back to college. If Jimbo and Chip stumble over the same time frame, I'd put my non existent wife on the table to get Chip Kelly at FSU. FSU is a program that will probably have an easier time getting the kinds of kids Kelly got to go to Oregon anyway. If we were willing to pay him, I think he would listen to a team like FSU.
2. Chad Morris: Why not? If he is successful this year, team are going to start calling because it would be weee little bit of a stretch for Clemson to fire Dabo and promote Morris. I don't think Morris is going to take just any old offer either. He's making more than enough money at a top program to wait for the offer he likes. I think FSU could be a player depending on the timing of the success, or lack there of, of Jimbo.
3. Brent Pease: Like Morris, he's not going to push Muschamp out of the way. Like Strong and Mullins, being a successful coordinator at UF will get you attractive offers.
4. Dan Mullins & Charlie Strong: Unlike Jimbo, they will have multiple years of HC experience. They can recruit Florida and the south and may be ready to move to a program that gives them a better opportunity to "win it all". I think FSU has more for a coach to work with than UL and Miss St. We will have to pay them well thought and it's very possible UL wet their pants after that Sugar Bowl win the way we did after our CFA win, and overpaid far too soon.
Have fun hiring a coach after firing a coach who gets 50 wins in five years.
You do realize how ridiculous this notion is?
I REALLY hope this post is not because if Coley leaving... Step back from the cliff. We are gonna be fine. I'm trilled to have Jimbo
Which part do you think is ridiculous? That Jimbo can get fired for winning 50 games over five years or that anyone of those coaches would want to come to a program that fires a coach after winning 50 games over five years?
Do you realize how ridiculous the ACC is? BTW, how many top 10 teams has Jimbo beaten while at FSU?
Pease? You can't be for real!
Also you point out a negative of Jimbo not having multiple head coaching job experience like Strong or Mullin, but you list Chad Morris as a replacement??? Color me confused
yes and yes
Jimbo hires an OC this off season and gives up play calling.... I will stand down.
If he doesn't, may this bitch burn down around him. 5-9 and 4-10 is better than 9-5 and 10-4... Firing awful is always easier than firing mediocre.
Shake your heads all you want, but Jimbo is getting less out of more, losing coaches that he shouldn't at bad times, pisses off the boosters, and the media doesn't like him. His honeymoon is over and if we continue to get more of the same with him, I'd gladly tell him to move on if it were up to me.
Are you honestly happy with the direction of FSU football right now? He's been given 3 years and all he's really done is pull in some top recruiting classes. Name 1 win that we can really brag about...name 1...I dare you. I'm sorry, but he's our Zook. I hate to admit it, but until he does something to impress me, that's how I have to call it.
The latter, mostly, but both.
I guess you and I are on the same page, and this is what I'm deathly afraid of. Jimbo wins 9-10 wins in a basketball conference, wins the basketball conference, and people are happy with that.
I'm scared to think what attendance will be like next year? We didn't pack the house this year and we won a BCS game and our conference. I think it will be embarrassing at some point.
No. Thought processes like this are embarrassing.
FFS, you can't fire a 10 win coach, anywhere. Have a good AD pressure him into making changes to advance the program.
But come on, regardless of schedule, there's just 5 bcs teams with more wins than FSU in the last 3 years.
We all want to take the next step, but Jimbo has done NOTHING fireable, and the fact that this is being discussed speaks to two things:
1. Jimbo has done an excellent job re establishing great expectations.
2. The improvement in program has been dramatic.
Zook inherited a team that won 10 or more games, 9 out of the previous 10 years. Zook won 24 games in 3 years at uf.
Fisher inherited a team that hadnt won 10 games in 7 years. Fisher was won 31 in 3 years at FSU
He will not be getting fired averaging 10+ wins a year and its foolish on your part to think otherwise.
Yes! Let's fire a coach who took us to 12-2, an ACC Championship, and a BCS bowl win--because some of our fans don't seem to understand the definition of progress or perspective. Emerald Bowl anyone? Who would want to coach here if we fire a coach for losing 2 games? We would look dumber than FIU for firing Cristobal.
Oh wait, I forgot that the reasoning is that the ACC was a cakewalk. I know some of yall are too young to remember, and some of you just flat out don't seem to understand football, but that long string of ACC titles by Bowden teams were not always against superior ACC competitors.
Not to mention that you put Pease on your "Dream List"..seriously??? He was a Boise St puppet, and his UF offense blew.
Oh, sorry, how dare someone bring up truth and logic.
SEC vs. ACC
In 13 game seasons in the ACC (ayy-tee-hee)... 10 wins = the minimum.
If he continues to lay 1-2 eggs a year like NC State... 10 wins is not going to automatically save him.
Go ahead and let him drop to Wake Forest and Duke next year.... and lose either Clemson/UF... and watch what happens to the money. He doesn't have to be perfect here, but he has to win the games he should. Booster contribution will drop through floor, if he screws around and loses 2-games next year to joke teams. And nothing we have seen up until this point should cause us to expect anything different.
12-1 next year = Well above average, I'll eat crow and let Cuth spit it in
11-2 next year = above average, I'll eat crow
10-3 next year = minimum
9-4 next year = below average
8-5 next year = well below average
7-6 next year = firing

I don't disagree with how difficult it would be to fire a 10 win coach, but FSU's situation isn't improving despite those 10 wins. FSU has to win in such a convincing fashion that we don't become Boise State. We aren't that far away no matter what you think. Honestly unless we jump to a better conference, it will come too close to impossible to win the title at FSU in a few years. I mean we can't lose 1 game and there even the champs have 1 loss most of the time. I mean sure we could lose to a top ranked uf team, but a loss at that point in the season would be almost impossible to overcome.

You see things like I do.
However, 11-2 next year is probably going to mean we don't go to the ACCCG nor a BCS game. If we do get to the ACCCG, it's because cu choked, which they could. But if we are still 11-2 and get there because of cu's choke, that means we lost another game we had no business losing.
I mean I sound negative even to myself, but that's how bad I think the ACC is. I mean it's almost to the point that 11 wins is the minimum. Jeez?
Just wondering, but didn't we lose to Kentucky in the Music City bowl not too long ago?
Oh and I do not care how many were suspended. It sure as hell does not list that in the Box Score.
I think Jimbo is having to totally recreate a culture of winning at FSU. He's a tremendous CEO. I think he starts acquiescing parts of the offense and he sees his stress drop and our offense be more well managed by that dedicated mind anOC gives you. Then we could contend for a title. ACC titles and rivalry wins are focus for us.
If Jimbo wins "only" 50 games in 5 years, that will be a disappointment to a lot of people that matter at FSU. 10 win seasons are nice, but it's not as impressive as it used to be (kind of like the 1,000 yard rushing season in the NFL.)
So if Jimbo goes 9-4 this year and 10-3 the next, I could very easily see him get fired. I would probably support it.
As far as coaches go, any unemployed HC, or a coordinator or HC at a smaller school would be happy to go to FSU even if Jimbo is fired for averaging 10 wins a season.
The only one on your list I like is Kelly.
Maybe Strong as well. Louisville was erratic during the season.
I think if Jimbo plateaus at 10-11 wins the next two years then we certain should be looking elsewhere, we are in arguably the 5th best conference in CFB, there's no way shouldn't dominate it. 10-11 wins in the ACC is really not that impressive at all.
Great post, I completely agree. Although I have no problem giving Jimbo one more season to see if he can put it together on his own---after all, he has a proven track record as an OC (that's why we got him in the first place). If he can't do it this year, well then let's hire an OC who can. It'll be interesting to see how productive we can be while breaking in a new QB--I expect a small dip in productivity at least for the first 1/4 of the season as Winston/Coker/Trickett get comfortable (Lord, I can hear the cliff jumpers now).
