I think Jimbo is a good coach, with many good ideas, but even his offense is an indictment of this old saying in the title.
Instead of being GREAT at certain things, like zone read, screens, or play action, he wants to be "good" at everything in the universe.
You only have college kids for 4 years, maybe 5 max. That's to develop them physically and also mentally and by the point you get them where they need to be, it's time to graduate and move on.
I am worried that Jimbo's coaching style and philosophy is more predicated towards an NFL mentality than college. There you have guys who can be career guys who are already physically developed and are in it for the long haul.
Is college coaching, and Jimbo's approach in particular, getting too cerebral these days? I mean, you have some of the finest athletes in the country at your finger tips and instead of letting them dictate the terms of engagement, you have them dancing around trying to read and react.
I think it just gets to a point where you have to let the kids play and stop thinking your way out of wins.

Your general idea is a sermon I'll amen to all day. You'll get hammered though. Jimbo is our Zook.
I'll agree with the general spirit of this post as I interpret it, i.e., Jimbo has his hands in too many things. He needs to hire an OC. In fact, b/c Stoops (& DJ) left this off-season is being dominated with discussions about hiring a DC. But while it's a brute fact that we need a new DC, IMO the OC is a much more important coaching position because it has been our O--not our D--that has been the weaker side of the ball for the last two straight seasons.
Such an excellent post. +1
I think we have a GREAT head ball coach, who isn't good at delegating responsibilities properly. Jimbo is a Great coach to lead the program, but needs to realize that even great head coaches can have Oc's to call the plays.
We can still run his offense. We can still use his schemes, but having an OC to add his touches and manage the play calling in-game wouldn't be a bad idea.
Pretty close to being mutually exclusive, those two things. Delegating is such a huge part of being a head coach.
I think Jimbo could be a great head coach, but I wonder if it's his inability to delegate that keeps him from becoming one.
But then, I really don't know what happens on the inside. It may also be that all he lacks is a QB who is more decisive under a blitz, and suddenly, Jimbo would be amazing. Seriously.
Best way to make the OPs point is to compare Jimbo's offense with Chad Morris at Clemson. Chad Morris could show up at a school in summer and the team be ready to execute the first game. If Jimbo showed up somewhere in Summer when the first game came around the players would be in tears they'd be so confused.
Is Jimbo's offense harder? Yes. Is it better? No.
How does Tajh Boyd play: loose confident, snappy, sharp....he makes mistakes because he gets overconfident and throws absolutely asinine passes sometimes.
How does EJ play: confused, thoughtful, hesitant, panicked, etc.
Crozea is right, those style offenses are not physical enough and wilt in 1-3 games a year but there could be an easy middle ground found.
I also think it comes down to what simple offense you want to run
I prefer the line up and jam it down your face type of run game and then run a read option type play action off of that
Watching the Redskins offense is awesome this season and I can't help but think EJ could have dominated at it in the ACC
I watch FSU's read option and want to throw up with how terribly our kids sell the fakes, the RB's don't even try to sell the fake and that is just poor coaching
Clearly Jimbo sees how bad it is on film and just ignores it or sucks at getting the point across to how important the fakes are
The Skins offense is so damn simple and its driving defenses nuts, and EJ does one thing great imo and that is run the option
Oh well, clearly I don't know what the hell is going on... all I know is watching Jimbo's offense makes my eyes bleed
