FSU Men's Tennis Closes Out Regular Season At Home

  • Chris Nee

    FSU release:

The No. 30 Florida State men's tennis team (17-7) closes out the regular season this weekend at the Scott Speicher Tennis Courts. On Friday the Seminoles host the No. 1 team in the country, Virginia (19-0, 8-0), at 3:00 p.m. On Sunday at noon, the team will honor three seniors as they play No. 52 Virginia Tech (12-8, 4-4). In the event of rain on Friday, the match will be played at the Indoor Tennis Facility by the Seminole Golf Course.

"Our seniors have been here for a long time and have achieved lots of success," said head coach Dwayne Hultquist. "Jordan (Kelly-Houston) certainly was a big part of winning both singles and doubles in our best road win in school history this year against Oklahoma. Having both Andres (Bucaro) and Anderson (Reed) in the top ten of career doubles wins shows how strong they are. We want to get a win on their last home match."

Sophomore Dominic Cotrone bumped up 30 spots this week in singles and is ranked No. 95 in the nation. In doubles play, he and junior Blake Davis are ranked No. 42 while senior Andres Bucaro and sophomore Benjamin Lock are No. 58.

Virginia has three players ranked in the top 25 with Jarmere Jenkins at No. 1 and Alex Domijan ranked No. 2. Mac Styslinger is No. 23 with Mitchell Frank at no. 36. Ryan Shane is No. 58 while Harrison Richmond sits at No. 76. In doubles, the Cavaliers also have three pairs in the top 25. Jenkins and Styslinger are No. 1 while Richmond and Domijan are No. 20. Domijan is also ranked with Frank at No. 21. Shane and Julen Uriguen are No. 75.

"I think anytime you play the number one team in the country, it's a great opportunity," said head coach Dwayne Hultquist. "It's going to be an exciting match for us. They've had a great year and to be undefeated this late in the season is a great accomplishment."

For Virginia Tech Amerigo Contini is ranked No. 52 while Andreas Bjerrehus is No. 98. The Hokies only have one doubles pair ranked with Contini and Bjerrehus sitting at No. 22.

"Virginia Tech is an important match with us splitting matches with them last year," continued Hultquist. "They have good players with a couple ranked. Both matches were very tight, hard matches last year."
