I know a lot of kids in Alabama got really excited when they hired a 55+ year old Saban.
Age is not a bad, having a staff dominated by older men, could be bad, but as a whole our staff is pretty young.
Not to mention Ellis is highly regarded, not nearly like Saban, but he is a top DC. At least that is what I have been able to gather so far.
Saban is a different animal, he was a well known college and NFL HC when he was hired at Alabama.
I want Ellis more than may e anyone here. So I'm convincing myself its not likely lol
Sarcasm, right? Must be.
There were dozens of people losing their ish on this site for weeks about how Jimbo was too animated and flipping out of kids.
"It's not the SEC conference vs. the ACC conference," "It's Florida State vs. Auburn." --Lamarcus Joyner
He's proven he can coach, but do no expect him to recruit.... One, he's a little on the older side.... Two, his times as head coach seems to indicate he can't. Three, his times at head coach indicate he can't manage.
#71 = 2012 recruiting class as head coach during 0-11 season he was fired from.
In my opinion, Jimbo needs someone who will take stress/pressure OFF him.... who can manage the defense... I don't see this being the perfect fit for us.

Any of you guys googled Johnson? And before I paste this quote, let me preface by saying I don't know anything about him but am a proponent of the notion that some coaches make better coordinators than head coaches... Now having said that, dude is 17-40 overall as a head coach throughout his career. I just hope he hasn't lost the edge...
I found this quote particularly damning in regards to his Southern Miss stint:
Dave Bartoo, owner/operator of the website cfbmatrix.com (College Football Matrix), a site that analyzes college football statistics based upon a given mathematical formula, recently told Bo Bounds of 105.9 The Zone in Jackson that Johnson had done “probably the worst coaching job I’ve seen in the matrix this century in (Football Bowl Subdivision) football.
The poster formerly known as 31-7. Understood by few, known by many, loved by all.
i dont think that the rank of his recruiting class at southern miss is any indication of how he would do here. if i have to explain why its apples and oranges then i dont think we would agree on much else. if the guy can coach, he can recruit here. stoops wasnt a particularly great recruiter. most of the studs we have on defense were reeled in by Jimbo (and Odell). It helped to say that Stoops was a great coach and developed guys X, Y, and Z...but i rarely remember recruits saying that Stoops sealed the deal. Now Coley and Gran on the other hand...
I'll be honest. My jaw is on the floor about some of these responses. Too old? Wouldn't excite recruits?
This guy is the equivalent of John Chavis who is balling out on the field and on the trail at LSU.
Jimbo yells at ej on the sidelines after every series. He doesn't show any fire. He looks scared on the sidelines of most games.
I feel like we need some energy on the defensive side
If we hire Ellis johnson, then we need a crazy lb or db coach
His X's and O's would have to be extremely valuable to offset his lack of success with management/recruiting.
I'd rather see us bring back Mickey if we are going to go down this road...
Trickett has proved this, right?
This thread needs less FSU fans and more USCe fans. Ask a Gamecock if Ellis Johnson is any good and it sounds like they are describing their own personal hero.
Has he proven either?

Trickett has been a below acceptable coach and a far below acceptable recruiter. He just sucks.
I wonder if there's any chance Jimbo's actually looking to bring him on to be our LB coach..
I just remember when he was looking for a DC, everyone thought Hudson was going to be the guy and then Stoops came out of left field, but we still brought Hudson on as LB coach. After such a dismal season for Johnson, I feel this could be a reality.
Probably just wishful thinking, but something to ponder.
People cried when he yelled at Wilder. People cried when he yelled at our WRs. He yells at lots of players. I thought we wanted less of that out of him?
Agreed that I prefer a couple of fiery defensive coaches.
I'm not defending RT, as I recognize he has issues, but square that statement with this:
(a) our coaches recruit area--not position,
(b) RT has successfully recruited several offensive and defensive players, and
(c) if we close out reasonably well this class, we will have two top 5 OL classes (certainly a number 1 class and a top 10 class) in 3 years.
I admit that he does have an unusually high amount of washouts.

This guy is a very top level elite coordinator. He's not coming back from a HC gig to be a LB coach. fsufsu is right, he will be paid between $700k and $1M per year to coach someone's defense.
Fwiw in looking at TOS' war room and comparing that to a couple emails flying around I'd say Ellis Johnson to FSU MAY be done. So get to like the idea of an "old man" leading FSU's defense to greatness. The dude can coach, coach, coach.
That is completely silly. Ludicrous, really.
The guy was an utter failure as a HC. However, Johnson knows great defense, coaches great defense, and has been a successful recruiter of great defensive players.
It is amazing how our fans pick apart every single candidate for every coaching position. If it is not pre-hire, it is post-hire. At various times, our fans have wanted to fire Odell, Fisher, RT, Coley, Dawsey, Hudson, and Stoops. Only Eliot and Gran have been immune, and that's because they are flying under the radar.
"TOS' war room"
LOL - I think that garbage is why most of us are over here. My sister in Vermont has about the same insider info as that dumpster fire.
Not discounting the other stuff you're hearing - it's just that place makes me laugh.
