Spoke with head coach Mike Martin, pitching coach Mike Bell, Jameis Winston and Luke Weaver.
Coach Martin is excited to be back out here. He said the team has a young dynamic and a lot of unknowns.
The loss of Mike Compton was a common topic. They aren't sure at this point how the rotation will play out. Beyond starters they also have to figure out middle relief and the closer spot. No real leader for closer role, but Winston will be among the guys likely working out of the pen.
Luke Weaver talked about being more comfortable entering this season. He said he is thinking less about his throwing motion.
With regards to Winston, he said he took some swings throughout the fall and leading up to now to stay in baseball shape. He is working in outfield, center, and will also get some work on the mound. He praised his slider, which the coaches backed up.
Main position battles remain first and second, with the pitching needing to find their fit.

He praised his spider??
Chris, did anyone mention how serious the elbow was? It is listed as a sprain but how did it happen? Whenever elbow is mentioned you think of "overuse" and not injury. If he just sprained it falling off a bike or something, that would be better.
Slider. Odd phone autocorrect.
Nee, I thought Gio was the man at 2B. Who is he battling?
Not positive how the injury occurred. They simply plan to re-evaluate in two weeks. Martin said they will prepare as though he may need more time than that, just to be safe. They definitely won't rush his return.
I would say he is the leading candidate, but Alvin Swoope and Casey Smit are also getting a look.
Really? I heard Sansone and Smit were battling for second base with Smit also vying for time at first base.
Also, heard that closer is Robbie Coles spot to lose.
I like to see heated competition and know that we have kids that are earning their spots unlike the BS we had a few years ago with Cardullo playing SS
Smit was getting some work at second today. He will also be competing at first with Nogowski. I think the preference is to have him at first, from what was said.
Second base is Alfonzo, Sansone, Swoope, and Smit all seeing work. They didn't really share a pecking order in that competition today.
Bell is definitely high on Coles, as is Martin Sr. Neither though would give much away about who will claim that closing role.
Good stuff Chris, excited for baseball to start back up.

This seems like one of our more talented teams of late; at least in terms of high school accolades. The experience is pretty limited, however. I guess we'll see if those accolades mean anything.
Are there any plans to have Brizuela earn some innings? Lastly, how do Knief and Davis look in the OF? Both were fairly highly regarded HS players.

Good Stuff Nee! Gonna miss my boy Dowlar at the games but you are a great replacement.
Knief and Davis, as well as D.J. Stewart, are all new faces that have been earning a lot of regular mentions from the coaching staff. I believe that Stewart and Davis were in left today while Knief was working in right.
DJ goes to the same barber that I goto. That kid is gonna be special. Davis I think has surprised some folks during fall ball.
Paid for my Section B tickets today. O CANADA!!!
3-2-1 TOUCHDOWN FSU
I think the of/dh spot will consist of Davis, Delph, miller, and Stewart.
Knief and Winston also have a chance to factor in there.
Man those are a lot of options for 4 spots. Good to have plenty of options though.
Nogowski will probably get some DH swings if he isn't starting at 1B.
